Zero Punctuation Takes a Look Back at Painkiller

Another Wednesday, another hilarious review from Yahtzee Croshaw. As Yahtzee points out, we’re kind of in the middle of a temporary drought, where no really exciting games are being released. So this week, he’s decided to take a step back in time and look at an old favorite of his, Painkiller. Somehow, even though he genuinely likes this game, he still manages to make another humorous review. Personally, I never cared for Painkiller much, but I’ve certainly played much much worse in recent months.

Painkiller (ignoring the expansions) is the closest Doom1/2 clone/successor we've had to date (Serious Sam was too over the top). Graphically, PK never blew me away. However, it did have atmosphere going for it. PK's artwork and level design was well thought out. I always considered Painkiller a well executed game, despite the shoddy voice acting and cutscenes stitched together to resemble a plot. PK's only flaw was it didn't push the envelope. It also had the misfortune of debuting right after Battlefield: Vietnam.

Painkiller also has the hardest secrets I've ever experienced in a video game. I never could get them all. They take some serious skills to get (sans cheating).

I remember getting an alpha copy of Painkiller and loving it, even though the framerate was really choppy. It's a shame Overdose sucked.
