I love demos, I really do. Play through them all, including the games you’re not immediately drawn to, and occasionally you find a gem. For some reason, I don’t get the impression that this will be happening with many people that try out the FIFA 08 demo. Non-soccer/football fans should certainly try it out, as the videogames can still be fun if you’re not a fan of the sport. But, looking at this year’s feature list makes it really hard to think anyone but diehard soccer fans will drop 60 bones on it.

Tiger Woods, another sports game that gets the yearly release treatment, at least was sporting the new GamerNet functionality this year. All FIFA 08 seems to have going for it is a new shooting mechanic and what’s being called a building-block system for tricks, so that you can recreate signature moves and the like. Sorry, EA, but that just isn’t doing it.

But don’t take my word for it – grab the demo from the Xbox Live Marketplace and try it out yourself

I buy FIFA every year and am always slightly upset with what they have done. It looks like 2008 may be the first football game that is getting close to where it needs to be. On the 360, 2006 was a dismal game, 2007 was a little better, but still highly flawed. It looks like they got a lot of things right this time. I’m looking forward to it.
