Xbox 360: Remember To Clear Your Cache

This week, I decided to dust off my Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion disc and replay the entire game. I entirely forgot how frustrating the game freezes were with that game. I made it 80% of the way through the main quest before I started having issues with the game freezing and it was happening several times every hour or so. Probably the only remedy for this would be the Xbox 360 cache clear code that was discovered long ago by Hexus. This method is the only way to entirely clear the Xbox 360 cache.

Take the following steps to clear your cache:

Go to the system blade and then select memory.

Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

Keep in mind that this method will also clear out all software updates, but it’s worth that cost. After you clear things out, you’ll experience far less issues when it comes to the system crashing or screens freezing. If anyone knows of a better method, feel free to drop a comment below. It’s easy to forget that sometimes your system may need a little extra maintenance to keep it running smoothly.

I have slow internet so losing my software updates would pain me : (

  2. William says:

That sucks. It is kind of a pain to have to re-do all the software updates. There are other methods of clearing caches, but none that work this well.

  3. jeff says:

all you need to do is hold down button A during the loading screen until you see Bethesda logo. this clears the cahce and doesnt affect any ogther systme updates.

  4. William says:

holding down A method works some, but doesn’t clear the entire cache, which honestly seems to give me less problems.

  5. somewhat says:

Will I also lose DLC if I do this ?

  6. William says:

No you will not lose DLC. You’ll just lose the updates which is a pain in the ass I guess, but it usually takes less than 10 or 20 seconds to do an update.

  7. Chris says:

  9. Kischen says:

It’s not working. I have tried it several times now, and nothing happens?

  10. Kischen says:

Got it now! Actually i used Y to get the device option (as i should) and then used Y (again) X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X.

  11. @Kischen says:

  14. Sean says:

Amazingly enough xBox support gave this to me as a solution to the “Disc Dirty/Damaged” issue. I have not had any issues with it erasing software updates, its essentially like disk clean up or defragging on your PC. So, yeah, a little routine maintenance never hurts…. too much.

  15. tyler says:

:?: I heard that it will delete your gamer profiles, is that true? :?:

  16. jonny says:

Will this delete my gamer profiles, gamerscore and saved games?

  17. noemailforyou says:

No it will not delete your profile. How many times do people have to say it only affect the UPDATES FOR GAMES.

  18. Goober says:

anyone know if some of the DLC like nights of the nine and the others will run without doing the update after clearing the cache? I still use the cheats so I dont want the latest patch

  19. Jeremy says:

Why the hell do we have to do this ON A DAMN CONSOLE?!

Might as well buy a bloody PC.

  20. Brittany says:

Will this delete any of my downloaded content, such as the vile lair or spell tomes?

  21. Chris says:

I downloaded the Halo 3 Legendary map pack today and it doesn’t work, I restarted my console, re downloaded the map pack, and I updated the game, then I cleared my cash and it still didn’t work, I need help fast please!

I have the same “Unreadable Disc” problem but i dont have a harddrive. How am i suppose to clear my cashe? I tried to Format the memory stick but with no results. Am i missing something ?

  23. Owner says:

Steveo, yeah, your DVD drive is screwed up.
Or your disk is too scratched.

And for those asking about their profile: yuor profile in ON Xbox live, not on your console. So no, it wont be deleted.

In the worst case, you pick it yup back thats it

  24. enmil says:

Thanks! i thought my drive was screwed and i havent been able to play ANY games cus of dirty/damaged errors but after this it worked again!

  26. ElroyCOhen says:

Had the disc unreadable problem with NHL 09. Thought it was the game. EB Games was nice enough to replace it even though it was past their exchange period. Guy suggesting clearing the cache if it didn’t work. Game still didn’t work. Cleared the cache. No problems now! I read on another forum something about 360 drives not being able to read dual-layered discs. Thought I might have a pricey problem on my hands. No problems at all though. Clearing the cache works like a charm. Anyone know why clearing the cache fixes disc problems?

  27. Lucky says:

So I’m having a problem with rock band. When there are a lot of notes coming the screen stutter’s in the note section. Nowhere else but in the note section. I have a 1080p tv and have tried all of the different settings as far as resolution. I have also tried clearing the cache. Any ideas?

    Lucky

  28. G-Blunted says:

So i have this problem with Disk Dirty or Damaged with all games brand new or old. The clearing cache didn’t work I don’t think….i got here because i’m researching the issue…my particular case has just been getting worse and worse over the last 4 months or so…it’s really bad now. I think it’s the DVD Drive in the xbox…it’s just going bad and getting worse… :(

  29. G-MAN says:

    TY THIS WORKS GREAT!!

  30. Brandon says:

It doesn’t delete save files for my games right? Cus I was so far in NHL 09 and Fallout 3, I don’t want to do all that again.

  31. David says:

hey guys. I cleared my cache to play Elder Scroll:Oblivion. now it’s saying it’s missing data and won’t load. Suggestions?

  32. katie says:

basically, clearing the cache really works.. However, there are times that you need to clear the cache twice before it will fully works.
Anyway about the disc uneadable issues, just take out the HD try to play a game disc w/out the HD and check if its going to work or not, if it still doing the same thing, ya need to send the console in for repair
