An interesting report from the NPD Group earlier this week was filled with all sorts of interesting facts, like the fact that 72% of the US population between the ages of six and 44 play videogames. That’s a pretty astounding number. When you get into the specifics, though, is where things get particularly interesting; for instance, check this out:
Among those who use a video game system for online gaming, Xbox 360 is the top system used, with 50 percent stating they play games online via that system. On average, Xbox 360 owners spend the most time per week using their 360s to play games online, followed by PC and PS3 owners using these respective systems for online game play.
Not satisfied with that small nugget, MTV Multiplayer contacted the NPD and to try and pry out some further information on the subject. This is what they got:
Among those who use a video game system for online gaming, Xbox 360 (50%), PlayStation 2 (22%) and Nintendo Wii (18%) are the top three systems used, with Xbox360 continuing to command a dominant lead.
That’s not a typo – PlayStation 2 came in at number two, with the 360 way out ahead. Aside from the abnormality that is the 360, the PS2 and Wii figures can likely be attributes to the fact that they have such large install bases; you’re bound to get a good number of people playing online.
What do you take away from the numbers? Are you surprised?

What about ps3?

It’s probavbly cos xbox owners have to pay for xbox live and so use it to get the value that they pay for. Whereas the rest get it for free. Correct me if i’m wrong but this means nothing.
I’m pretty sure that is a typo because there is absolutely no way that a quarter of US PS2 owners are playing online with it. With nearly 50m PS2s sold in the US that would mean over 12m playing online on it and that would be far more than are playing on the 360. Its obviously a typo
Jack your an idiot. I mean seriously, are you special or something? The hardcore gaming base plays, and buys the 360. This is why you see the high numbers, and not only that Xbox live is the most user friendly online structure in gaming. The old saying “you get what you pay for” is exactly the difference between sony’s psn and Xbox’s Live. You cant polish a turd, and that’s exactly what sony’s network is.
could be cause xbox has the best online, and also its online is more connected with the people (cuz of the ppl using headsets n all that i guess)

Norbit you don’t get it. It is not 22% of PS2 owners. Of the total of persons playing online, 22% are PS2 owners, 18% Wii owners, and 50% XBox 360 owners. Probably the remaining 10% are PCs.
