Weber State University is preparing to review future game designers’ first protocol video games developed with skills learned in its summer gaming camp. WSU has recently begun to offer a program in game development in response to growing local developer and Disney-affiliate Avalanche Software.

The video game creation camp teaches youths the skills they need to use various development tools to create their own games. The curriculum includes free software such as Game Maker, graphics tools GIMP and Blender, and sound effects package Audacity as well as a XNA DVD tutorial to take home on game development for the XBox 360.

Programs like WSU’s camp have become much more common as video games become more mainstream. Utah is one of several states wooing the games industry. With Avalanche and EA Sports already in residence students will have local opportunities to join the games industry if they choose game design as a career.
