Gamasutra has an article about converting a video game with an established world and history to a different media; in this case the translation of the World of Warcraft to a pen and paper RPG. This process although deceptively simple on the surface is actually an adventure in itself.
Detailing the history and background of World of Warcraft is easy. Converting current game mechanics can be challenging. However, the real problem is innovating. Creating something new for an established virtual world that is still changing and growing is a very long arduos process of making stuff up having it aproved or making revisions if necessary, and repeating the whole procedure until both parties are satisfied.
If you’ve ever dreamed about taking your favorite game and doing something with it whether it’s converting it to a pen and paper role playing game, creating a play or film or even writing fan fiction; this article has some good points and suggestions that might make your endeavor easier.
