Wii and Nintendo DS Controls Earn Nintendo a Second Emmy Award

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded Nintendo its second Emmy Award in two years for “excellence in engineering creativity”. The awards were presented at the at the annual Technological & Engineering Emmy Awards in Los Vegas. The Wii-mote was recognized for it’s motion sensing controls and the DS for it’s groundbreaking touch-screen control scheme and distinctive dual-screen display.
Nintendo’s first Emmy was awarded for its invention of the plus-shaped D-pad in 2007. The company is counting on continuing its winning streak with its wireless Wii Wheel for a new Mario Kart racing game and the Wii balance board for Wii Fit.
I’m wondering just how different and innovative the wireless Wii wheel can possibly be when compared to wireless wheels available for other game platforms. I do admit there’s nothing quite like the Wii balance board out there, so I can see an Emmy possibility for that peripheral.

Playing a Wii game with your DS as the controller is also pretty neat. Wireless wheels lack a solid feeling of being planted for me when it comes to steering though. But maybe that’s because I drive a real car and have been tainted. Plus all those years in the arcade banging on an arcade wheel.
