Who Needs An iPhone When You Can Have A PSP Phone?

According to the NY Post, Sony plans to add a cellphone to the next generation of PSP units. Video chat and messaging will also be included. This is great news for gamers and could definitely extend the viability of the PSP. Currently, the Nintendo DS is obviously the best in portable gaming, but this could breathe some new life into the Sony PSP. There’s no telling how long it will take Sony to pull this project off, but they better do it soon. This move will go down in history as an act of desperation or an act of genius.

June 10, 2007 — Embattled Sony is making a move to reverse extremely disappointing sales of its PSP game system. The electronics giant has filed for a patent to add a cellphone to the next generation of PSPs. It also inked a deal with U.K. carrier BT Mobile to bring advanced multimedia, such as video chat and messaging, to the PSP. Both moves to upgrade the underperformimg PSP come as rival Apple readies to drop its much-anticipated iPhone June 29.

ds isnt the best, its not even in the 3rd generation. can the ds download things like videos and watch them,NO. as a psp owner im proud of having a psp.

I love my PSP as well. I simply think Nintendo has the market when it comes to fun portable games. The PSP tends to have too many games that are simply watered down versions of the exact same game you find on console. That’s my opinion anyway. I have found several PSP games I really love, but usually it’s the opposite deal.

  3. snoochmarster says:

i agree, the DS sucks with its over hyped touch screen and poor quality 3d visuals. The psp’s problem is that ppl just dont know what its capable of (live TV streaming, remote access to PS3, internet browser, movie playback, mp3 player, rss player, camcorder (with attachment) etc etc) not to mention the vast difference in game quality compared to the crummy ds (Lego star wars? NFS? you know im right!) The ds is for little kids, trendy middle-aged ppl who think theyre “with it”, Ppl who dont know what the PSP can do and girls who really want to carry around a glorified tamogotchi…. PSP is for gamers and ppl who love gadgets, forget the sales figures PSP is back and with the addition of regular firmware updates (every 6-8 weeks) its uses are expanding.

DS had some pretty good games, but PSP wins for the homebrew and emulation

  5. Tak says:

I find it funny that the majority of people who use their PSPs for homebrew stuff just use it to emulate Nintendo games and then go on to say how crap Nintendo consoles are… But yeah, DS is best hands down and the number of killer apps and hardware sales figures reflect that.
More to the point of this actual news post, it says that this will be a feature in the next generation of units, meaning current owners are going to be pretty stuffed unless they shell out for the new model.
Hmmm, a portable gaming console mixed with a phone. That didn’t exactly help the N-Gage’s sale did it?

  6. William says:

Tak..glad you noticed the next generation bit. It’s possible they may make some attachment or something, but from the reports it doesn’t look like it. Sure the PSP is awesome for homebrew. Some people are really into that, but I still have to defend my stance of the DS having better games.

  7. Tak says:

If the PSP were just smaller, with a better battery life, lighter weight and less loading times it would be just fine. Before they go and cram more things people don’t want into it, they should first fix the many design flaws in the system. I’ve been holding out for ages for a European PSP price-drop or newer model because from what I’ve seen of the system itself and the quality of games, it’s just not worth the money. I would much rather use my iPod for videos and music and for phone calls, I picked up an old one for £5 which does its job just fine.
My problem is, I don’t see why they think people want everything in a single device. I mean sure, it’d be nice if it were that simple, but Sony PSP does what it does poorly. Video playback can be higher quality on a PDA (PDA’s are also lighter and more attractive and support dozens more formats than PSP ever will), portable games are higher quality on DS (due to longer battery life, better library and more “play on the go” titles), music is higher quality on an MP3 player with an HDD rather than using removable Sony cards (higher quality may mean easier or more efficient).
The idea of a new model of PSP is to improve its current functions. If that were the case I would buy one, but shoving more stuff inside it isn’t going to help, rather make me want to buy one even less.

    PSP PHONE = AWESOME

  10. Jules says:

The PSP is a good multimedia device, and kinda at games (if you’re still stuck in the push button age). The DS is far superior in actual gameplay and innovation, hands down. As for a PSP phone? Please… it will be cool but it will be an unused feature. Gamer geeks have so little a social life between their game saves that they won’t know what to do when they have to use their brain to chat, rather than just picking one of three preset responses.

  11. TREKSTER says:

If you prefer games that look like they was ported from the n64 then I could say yah the DS is the best to have. I keep reading the broken record posts Watered down versions (thats a load and and just DS users angry as they can’t have ports from the Gamecube watered down or not).
    a few exmaples
Outrun 2006 compare to Console (nothing watered down and has mroe features)
Burnout Legends and Dominator nothing watered down (compare Legends PSP to DS and you will difference is like night and day)
Medal of Honor Heroes – watered down???
    Metal Gear Solid
    Daxter
    Ratchet and Clank

This list I can go on and on but there is no need. The PSP is the most fun you can have with portable gaming unless you are strictly into platformers which dominates the DS as it has very poor 3d capabilities (less than the N64 over 10 years old)
