WarDevil `Spilt Blood` Trailer (HI)

Remember WarDevil? It was one of several games that was used to show off the capabilities of the Xbox 360 before the console had even been named. Well, now it appears the game is back, it’s PS3 exclusive, and it’s got a new trailer. The video really doesn’t show much except what sort of environment you can expect. It looks like the game will take place in some bizarre sci-fi, post-apocalyptic world. Not much is known about the game other than that, but this trailer has certainly piqued my interest.

Sweet we get to kill already injured things lying on the ground, mighty warriors we are.

Spare me the Xbox fanboy look into past before Development of the game was even out of proof of concept stage. The fact remains it’s now a PS3 “Exclusive” and there’s no need to cry over spilt milk. The Reality is that this game could not have run on the Xbox 360. Not because of large graphics file sizes, but because of large sound files, etc. Very similar to MGS4 with over half the BluRay disc taken up by sound (etc) rather than graphics. Kojima couldn’t have the game on several disks as that would break up the experience of a game without load screens or transition effects.

Same for this Game/Movie experience running on Digi-Guys fully Streaming Engine the RTE1080! ….What does a Streaming Engine have to do with it? As we know Xenon is a traditional CPU although naturally Xenos is a Streaming GPU, that doesn’t mean the CPU can run in Streamed configuration. Cell and RSX on the PS3, on the other hand is a completely configurable Streaming Platform ideally suited to Procedural Real Time Rendering for this game! ….just get over it already!

The WarDevil Project will be the perfect example of the Power of PS3’s Streaming Platform. DirectX has no API’s to replace OpenVG and OpenMAX as yet. OpenMAX is a Streaming API and OpenVG is for Streaming Objects and fully Vectored Graphics Content. There is no CGI or as Digi-guys refers to it FMV (full motion video) in WarDevil!

Cut Scenes are run in Real Time procedurally rendered on the fly (similar to MGS4) in GAME ENGINE and Xbox 360 does not have the capability to do this in an unbroken process without BluRay and these newer API’s including OpenGL ES 2.0 developed with PS3 and future mobile embedded devices in mind!

When then started the WarDevil Project their goal was to blur the distinctions between Movies and Games, Robot and Humans, Life and Death in a future where Man becomes more Robot and unfeeling like and Robots become more Human with feelings. So is it the harsh reality of a World of Human/Machines (where Machines rule man) or the Human Part of the Robot Machines that dies and is dominated over by a race of Man/Robots?

Watch the video of this fully in-game sequence and pay attention to just how naturally human like the Hero/man moves. See how close to reality it is and how difficult it is to draw distinctions between the two hero and anti-hero. Plus BTW you will not be able to see pixels in this game. It’s called “Resolution Free” or Procedurally Rendered Scaled “On the Fly” graphics rendering! This is why it’s a PS3 Exclusive!

I found it kind of interesting that the main character gently put the pole arm into the zombie things chest.

  4. Gigarayzor says:

There aren’t enough good guys commiting mercy killings in games today. Or enough truly badass villains who refuse to stop fighting even when they’re on the ground bleeding out.

    @MoNaRky :

If I remember correctly, doesn’t gears of war have in game cut scenes? There are plenty of older games that have them as well. As for the ‘On the fly’ graphics, this is nothing new, computers have been using that for years. And I don’t know what your talking about with the 360 not being able to run the game, the sounds can be compressed if they have to, or some loaded onto the 360’s hard drive (similar to how some games install on the PS3’s hard drive).

  6. Raw says:

Monarky: thanks for the tech heads up. Although you derailed yourself nearing the end of your post ¬¬

@Russ: I believe this “on the fly” graphics it’s different to the one used in older games. In older games, models and sounds that were used on a realtime cutscene were loaded since the beginning of such, sometimes even placed onto the map itself. I think this new technology allows quick streaming of models, animation info and such.

And aren’t you forgeting something? Microsoft has it’s hands tied down because of the severe mistake of offering their console without a hard disk. I believe at least 20% of xbox owners do not have a hard drive, so game devs can’t really implement a feature that utilize it. (Like GTA4)

Anyway, there’s something a bit too shallow about this trailer, it really doesn’t shine enough.

  7. UnrivaledShogun says:

meh. And I was actually going to buy a PS3 to play THIS game? I was so excited about it when all the sony fanboys were acting like this game will be the second coming of Jesus. The more videos I see of it, the more I would rather just buy a xbox 360.

  8. Raw says:

This doesn’t look like a system selling title. But hell, an xbox? Do you plan to miss MGS4?

If you are planing on buying both consoles on the long way, first get a PS3, as xbox exclusives doesn’t seem that appealing (except Ninja Gaiden 2 of course).
