Vista Service Pack 1 Official

It has been exactly 7 months since Microsoft bestowed upon us the pretty OS known as Vista. Now it seems a much needed Service Pack is on the horizon. The Windows Vista Team Blog has shared with the community details regarding the upcoming OS band-aid:
In addition to updates we’ve previously released, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues we’ve identified via customer feedback, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards.
As a gamer, I’m hoping the performance discrepancy between Vista & XP is finally brought to nominal levels. I know, personally, the biggest issue I have with Vista is the performance drop in games across the board. Yes, some games do run very close (or better in rare instances) to that of XP performance; however, I can’t justify Vista as a gaming platform if there are that many more games that I play that will suffer as consequence. And since I play a variety of games on a regular basis, it truly is an “all or nothing” decision with me. Dual booting? That’s so 2001…
Even the hardcore aspects of my gaming persona can deal with the fact that Vista is a memory hog. Memory is relatively cheap right now. But, the hardware to compensate for the FPS drop in Vista is not cheap. It is difficult to market an OS touted as the Games for Windows platform when your gaming experience is actually diminished.
Anyway, the Beta for SP1 apparently begins in two weeks. The whitepaper provided covers most of the gory details. The official SP1 release date hasn’t been announced, but we’ll assume early 2008 at this point.

People (should have) said the same thing about windows xp when it came out.
Seriously, a lot of current games will play on win2k, do separate benchmarks and you’ll find out that you’ll get a nominal performance increase with win2k.
It may not be much, but I know there are a lot of people out there who go after every inch they can.
This might even be shocking to you, but I found that Half-Life 2 runs better on linux emulating windows, than on windows xp.
The game performance content was leaked and pirated quite a while ago, shhh. ;O
