kidsgaming Video Games Cut into Reading and Homework Time, but Not Necessarily Into GradesA new study has been carried out by Hope Cummings of the University of Michigan and published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

According to Reuters the results of the study are that video games cut into reading time for boys and homework time for girls, but not vice versa. However gaming doesn’t seem to effect time spent with family and friends, and doesn’t support the theory that video games make players antisocial. The findings also don’t necessarily translate to gaming leading to poorer performance at school.

“Although gamers spend less time reading and doing homework, there have been some studies that show that high academic achievers spend less time doing homework,” Cummings said.

“Gamers may actually be more effective in completing homework assignments, and as a result, they spend less time doing homework. We need to look deeper into what is going on,” she said.

In these days where society is questioning whether video gaming addiction is an actual disease, it’s nice to see studies that are realistic and fairly objective. The article is well worth the read.
