Video Game Restrictions to Be Big Election Issue in Britain

Is it not fashionable to let parents raise their children, or is it just a new found phenomenon that our politicians think they should try to intervene?

Whatever the case, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is going to do something about the apparent lack of parental involvement, because right now there’s a nationwide governmental review of all media in Britain which might very well end up with voluntary restrictions placed on video games.

“This is not the government telling people what they should do … this is society reaching a conclusion with all those people involved about what are the legitimate boundaries,” Brown said recently at a press conference.

These legitimate boundaries, which tell people what they should not do, have yet to be decided. At the moment, Brown is not placing any restrictions on violent video game sales to minors, but it appears that the thought is still there.

A recent post in Gamasutra gave the impression that this whole debate is just going to escalate over the coming months to the coming elections, with violent video games becoming a huge issue for politicians to debate about. It would be nice, as with all debates, to turn the focus to core issues instead of fringe crap, but unfortunately we live in a world of lip service without much delivery. Style over substance.
