A few months back, a PSP firmware update made some hidden changes that gamers would never notice. Whoops, that describes most PSP firmware updates. This one in particular, version 3.50, unlocked the PSP’s full processor speed of 333MHz, compared to the 222MHz speed the system ran at previously. While this wouldn’t have any impact on older games, seeing as they weren’t designed with this in mind, developer Ready at Dawn is making use of the extra processing power for the upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus.
GameVideos has put together a video comparison of a version running at 222MHz and a version running at 333MHz. While the changes are subtle – a Ready at Dawn narration will help you spot the differences – and polish has simply been added due to the extra development time, there are some nice new effects as a result. Two that you’ll be able to spot early in the video include shadows and enhanced blood effects, which combine to make this game look a whole lot better.
