Yep, STALKER, this is why I don't buy online games for my 360. PC stills rules the online multiplayer world anyway.

The best point in this thread is the one made by usedcisco. We all saw the GuitarHero III hype, including "play online with your friends!" Nowhere did it say that you were required to have a Gold membership to do so. In fact, I actually got GH3 for 360 instead of my PS3 just because two of my friends that only have 360 would be able to play with me.

I was SO HAPPY to try to get online the day I got the game and realize that without a Gold subscription, I couldn't even browse leaderboards, or get the code to link my game with the Guitar Hero website.

Charge for DLC, and I won't say a word. Charge for special features, and that's fine. Charge me something that YOU advertised as core gameplay, and I'll scream my head off.

I'm done with online on 360. PSN has better latency anyway.

The point isn't about HOW MUCH they are charging. Its that a game INCLUDES multiplayer, yet MS chooses to RESTRICT multiplayer to those who pay for a gold membership. If they want to have a paid service, with added value (stat tracking, voice chat, friend requests, etc), thats fine, I'm sure some want those features and are willing to pay for them, but many of us just want to use the online features that should be in the game we paid for. It seems silly to me that a game would have an online component but MS is some bastard gatekeeper and puts ties the multiplayer (which should be a standard/basic feature) in with the upgraded features of Live Gold. Also, its shitty because literally, MS is the only ones doing it. And because of the added features of LIVE (Which ARE nice), they've tricked a lot of there customers into believings "its worth it" when in reality, they could have free online multiplayer while restricting the Gold account features. that way, those who think those features are worth it, could still pay $50 per year and those who don't care about those features could still play online for free. The thing is, I think MS KNOWS most people don't actually CARE about the features of LIVE and really ONLY pay for LIVE because they MUST in order to play online. If they detached online multiplayer from GOLD status and let Silver gamers get online (albeit without the advanced features of GOLD), then MANY FEWER gamers would pay for GOLD.

I'm with the editor on this one. Like Cisco said, you buy the system and the game and then you have to pay for wanting to see and compare your stats, matchmaking, and ranked games? And then downloadable content to go with it? Fucking Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar industry and they never believe in giving back, you have to pay to use and go to Windows chatrooms....you have to pay to get exteneded e-mail accts. Whether or not you get XBL Gold, Microsoft wont be strapped for anything, it'll just go to his kids college fund.

As much as I hate saying this line...

It's not about the money, its about the principle.

50$ for a year is NOTHING but why do people have to pay for it? Think about it, you pay money to get more out of an internet service. You pay money. To get more. That's pure gain of profit from MS right there.

If you're talking about cheater then its easily answer: 1) Ads 2) Cheaters make people not want to play, less people playing will eventually lead to less games being bought, less games being bought less profit MS makes, right? I think that MS would pay out of their own pockets to keep cheaters at bay, it's not like their short on cash.

Here's an example

-You own a public pool.
-You charge normal fees for swimming and extra fees to go swim in the deep-end.
-There's a shark in the pool.

Are you going to

A) Wait to get enough money from the people that pay extra to be able to hire someone to get rid of the shark. This restricts everyone from swimming till you get enough cash

B) Pay out of your own pocket to get the shark ASAP out of that pool so that you can go back to making money

XBLA fees are really low. You can play on live for the month for the cost of one movie rental.. or basically around that price.

Would you pay for a movie rental to watch at home ? Then what's the problem with paying less than that for a month's worth of gaming ? There are definatley less cheaters than on PC, though they are there. Paying for a game doesn't include paying for online because, the game publisher and MS are usually two different entities. I enjoy seeing someone stick to their principles, but this guy could've given that Gold subscription as a present to reader of underpriveliged kids, etc...(and I know that last one will get me flamed).

AMEN VE3D!!

Gold is quite possibly the biggest slap in the face I have ever received as a gamer. When I am REQUIRED to pay for a premium service to use a feature that was advertised as a core feature of a game I paid full price for (Yes, Guitar Hero III, I am looking at you), then something is horribly wrong with the service.

I come from a long standing PC gaming background, and I have never paid for my online play, and cheaters are rare. Why? Because users create programs like PunkBuster. Oh wait, MS doesn't allow user programs, does it?

MS is simply milking the 360's playerbase for every nickel they can get. Yes, the ads on Live would more than pay for Gold to be free. No, MS doesn't care.

I think the $50 per year is fair because it works out to like $3.80 per month average, with the 12+1 card. $3.80 is a small price to pay to have a superior online system and keep things going good.

Do i like having to pay the $$? NO defently not, it probaly could be a free service with the money microsoft has and makes, but would it be as good if it was free? id probaly expect to see more advertising and pooerer service if it was free, being free means no one cares for it. its like a cheap wine, ya its there in the fridge, it will get u drunk, but you wont enjoy the after taste.

If lag is an issue on Xbox Live it is not because of Xbox Live it is because of sombody's crappy Internet connection.......when you establish an online game one person's Xbox is the host......if another players Internet connection sucks who is playing the online game you happen to be in as well then you will experience lag......lets point the finger where it belongs here folks.....lag is associated with someones crappy Internet connection.....NOT Xbox Live.

Please, anyone trying to argue that having a paid online service somehow keeps out the trash has NOT been on LIVE lately. That service is absolutely littered with trash. And no, cheaters are not completely eliminated.

As for paying for LIVE, I don't mind if they want to offer a paid service so you can have elaborate friends list, voice chat etc, but to include in that service the actual online component? Thats just pure bullshit. The online multiplayer should be in the silver so that anyone can ACTUALLY USE THE GAME THEY PAID FOR.
If you want to withhold all the niceties of LIVE for the Gold subscribers thats fine, but don't withhold online multiplayer just to squeeze more money out of the consumer trying to play their games. Hell, even Nintendo offers free online play, and in games like Guitar Hero III, Battalion Wars, Strikers, MoH2, the actual online gameplay is every bit is solid and problem free as Live, you just don't have all the bells and whistles like voice chat and friend requests, but the online gameplay is great, and free. If Nintendo can do it, MS sure as hell can.

@ dragon, it's not the money, i have all 3 game consoles, so im not out of cash or anything, its the principle, no other console or pc makes you do this, so why does ms, especially when they get ad money from all the ads covering xbox live., Burger king? seriously? and there are most certaintly cheaters on live, and more lag than psn, well I can't speak for right now, but when i had the 6 month free membership thing, it was terrible and i couldn't believe ppl pay for that, i dont care if it's a buck a year, you shouldn't have to pay and that's final

@Norbit

Free means that everyone and their grandmother can use it with no restrictions........maybe you like going into a game online with other people where some of the people are using mods that give them an advantage that you don't have because you play fair......I don't.

Even if Sony banned people who cheated what's to stop them from creating a new account and doing the same cheating they did before? I'll answer that for you......Nothing can stop them.......because it's free.

If you get banned on Xbox Live you can always create another gamertag but you'll have to pay the fees all over again to play online......I'm sorry but $50 a year is a small price to pay to keep the cheaters out......

when i had a 360 i gladly paid the $50 a year. no cheaters because they almost always get banned sooner than later, and with demos coming weekly what more could you want. sure you can get those things for free on a PC but i found the quality of the Live service was actually pretty good.

@ Dragon

I find it funny that people will pay it.

@ ManOfTeal

Sony offer a service free of charge with less lag than Live. They also seem to have less problems with trouble makers than Live.

If you disagree then try out Warhawk. Its as good a live gaming experience as you will find anywhere and its free. There is no excuse at all for Microsoft to charge you for a system, charge you for a game and then charge you to use it.

I find it funny that people won't fork out the £35 or however much it is in the US for Gold, that's like a days wages to pay for a whole year, this gets you online multiplayer for EVERY GAME that has it, far better value than playing any MMO, £8 a month is what the average MMO costs here in Europe and that's for just one game, with Live gold it's every game for a few quid less, deal of the century to be quite farking honest.

I've played with both the PS2 online and the original Xbox and Live is by far the superior service, you get what you pay for and with the PS2s rather limited and rather laggy online functions that couldn't be more true (don't have a PS3 so I can't comment on the PSN stuff, chances are I never will, too expensive and not enough genuinely good games).

You guys do know that those subscription fees pay for the constant maintenance and upkeep of the xbox live service right? I mean paying those fees allows Xbox live to boot out cheaters and other people who find loopholes in the systems and exploit them. You don't get that kind of service unless you pay for it. I'm personally very glad to pay $50 a year so I don't have to deal with cheaters.
