Ubisoft Says Sorry about the L-Word

There’s nothing quite like corporate apology that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Ubisoft, distributor of Scrabble 2007 for the DS, apologized for the inclusion of the word “lesbo” being included in the “junior version” of the game. Jonathan covered this issue last week.
Ubisoft is not pulling the game, and has apparently considered the general apology to be enough. It seems to me a simple patch would be quick and easy enough to send out, if such a thing were available on the DS. Too bad.

Warm and Fuzzy? This makes me want to puke
Once more, moralists win a bout. “Oh no, surely our children will go on a murdering spree GTA style because the word “lesbo” is in a DS game. Oh noes, can’t expose our children to gays! While we’re at it, after we ban all violent games, I feel we should also screen all age 7- games for all references to reality!”
I totally agree with you Rasa, this censor thing is beginning to get on my nerves.
Juvenile and superficial complaints, Rasa and crowbar. A rating creates expectations about the sort of content a parent can anticipate from a game. If I’d rather be the one to explain the reality of lesbianism to my children, at the time and manner that I see fit, I wouldn’t call that censorship. In fact, if you want to get all Locke-ian about it, I’m not sure how this supposed infringement on Ubisoft’s rights (or that of the consumer) are somehow more grievous than that of the infringement on the parent who purchased it. Beyond that, this apology was given freely without coercion, there was no restriction put on the game, and no one claimed a link between this exposure and childhood violence.
In other words, both of these posts are just noise. Ignorant noise.
