ps3 konsole Top 10 Reasons To Keep the PS3 Dream Alive (Continued)
My post yesterday about the “Top 10 Reasons to Keep the PS3 Dream Alive” really sparked some heavy debate. It seems to me that most gamers are inclined to latch on to one system and think negatively about the others in the race. That attitude is simply not a great one to have. I know many Xbox Fanboys want to see the PS3 go down in flames and vice versa. The question I raise here is; what possible good could come out of one system winnig the next-gen war? The answer is obvious. If only one system rules, we’d have a monopoly and see game prices skyrocket. Right now, competition is driving prices down and encouraging quality game production. Right now, we should all want 3 systems to be in the mix of things. Too many people are judging the PS3 on early system sales. Trust me when I say this, the Sony PS3 will be a strong competitor in the future. I’ll be completely honest, I play the Xbox 360 more than any other system, but I refuse to allow myself to become a system loyalist. It’s better for us as gamers to keep our options and opinions open for the future. All it’s going to take is a couple awesome games for the PS3 to all of a sudden be popular. That’s simply how the world works. My original top ten list follows the break.

  • 10. You simply have to give it some more time.
  • 09. You cannot deny the power of the cell processor. I predict we will start seeing a great difference between PS3 performance and Xbox 360 performance as the next generation gets into full swing.
  • 08. Backward compatibility with the PS2 collection (one of the best console collections in history I might add).
  • 07. The price will eventually drop. I can’t say when, but it’s unavoidable.
  • 06. Can anyone say “Gran Turismo 5’?
  • 05. The PS3 is embracing the future of Bluetooth technology.
  • 04. PlayStation Home
  • 03. If Blu-Ray wins the next generation movie battle, the PS3 makes for a cheap Blu-Ray player
  • 02. Unchartered: Drake’s Fortune. This could be the big hit they are waiting for.
  • 01. Can anyone say “Gran Turismo 5’?

The PS3 has lots of serious problems so it’s not only fanboys saying how bad it is. I also own a 360, PS3 and hopefully soon a Wii – I love ‘em all!

Anyways, the main reason the PS3 isn’t gonna to fail is BluRay. BluRay has already won the format war and like you said, it’s a cheap BluRay player.

But for games, as you know, it’s been a disaster so far. It still downscales PS3 games to only 480p on rear projection TVs while the cheaper 360 upscales them to 1080i. Sony has almost no standards when it comes to the PSN so its a total crapshoot to see if the game you’re interested in has chat, force feedback, or even online play!!!

Also, I’m sorry but the reign of Gran Turismo is over. They couldn’t get GT4 online though lord knows they tried for years. The GT HD demo didn’t make it online either. These guys are on the same deadline schedule as the Vista team – years at a time late. Seriously, don’t count on GT to move lots of systems, we will be lucky to see it before 2009. They are just fortunate Forza2 left the door open by only offering 10 tracks and a max of 8 cars online.

  2. B.I.G. says:

The ps3 is best console out of the three techonlogy wise, potential wise, and son game wise. If the price was lower we wouldn’t even be having this conversation and halo3 would’ve been a a pc exclusive or also on the ps3 if you know what I mean. Talk about problems the 360’s are still breaking with their red light of death.

  3. theDECAY says:

I totally agree with you. Though right now I have a PS3, I appreciate the Xbox 360. I like GOW and I have no real beef with Halo, except that I don’t think it is really as great as every one says. But, one monopoly in the game world would hurt. So, either way, right now I am happy with my PS3. I am just waiting for MGS4. To be honest, that is why I got the PS3. Everything MGS is legend.

  4. William says:

B.I.G., good point about the red ring of death. You know I went through 3 original Xbox systems. I am just waiting for the day my 360 dies on me.

Each system right now has benefits and problems. I just do not understand how people cannot see the future for the PS3. There definitely is one and if we have this conversation 12 months from now, I guarentee it will be completely different.

  5. kevin says:

When PS2 dominated the previous generation, did you come with
10 reasons to keep gamecube or Xbox alive?

There are at least 2 more reasons someone else mentioned.
Running Linux and contribute to cencer research. BTW, what is
    Linux for?

  6. IchimonTheGreat says:

 PS3 has a lot going for it, mainly because those who bought it or are planning to buy it have come to know Sony as a company of quality. But the credit due is not unto them…it’s to the developers. Sony had an early aliance (1993) when Namco first announced its plans to support the then-ditched-at-the-altar “SNES CD add-on” (remeber, they began after a split in interests between themselves and Nintendo). Namco has since grown into the very definition of what PlayStation gamers have wanted: the arcade in their home. In ammassing the various companies and properties and forging great aliances along the way, Namco had always been there. What am I trying to say? That a little upstart, with more guts than know-how took on the world that was once owned by Nintendo and Sega. And succeeded! What ELSE am I trying to say??

That Microsoft is in THAT VERY POSITION AS WE SPEAK…
With Bungie backing it up ALL THE WAY…

(…and let’s not forget Epic Studios)

  7. Andy says:

Your point 08 is a crock of shit.

Try running PS2 games on a European PS3, where sony has removed the PS2 chip and tries to use software emulation.

Even some PS2 games I own published by Sony (Eye Toy Sports) do not work.

  8. Because Xbox 360’s come and go, but the PS3 is forever!!!!

    sneaker sneaks!!!

  9. sdfsf says:

Just wait for next year. Sony should removed their Blue-ray dvd player and sell it little cheaper. What a stupid move Sony made. X-box and Wii didn’t put in any DVD player that why they are so cheap.

  10. Mr. Burns says:

i am just glad that smithers isn’t here

  11. Brandon says:

The Blu-Ray is no longer a factor considering Sony is going to release a $500 stand alone player here real shortly. You mentioned that the price is going to go down but that holds true of the other consoles too.

Uncharted may be the big hit they need but no matter how good it looks or how much praise it gets until it hits store shelves you can’t tell if it is going to be a sucess. The problem is that right now at this price point it doesn’t have the games to move it off the shelf.

With Microsoft coming into this holiday with Halo 3 and a better library of games I don’t see the PS3 out preforming it. Even if Sony cuts the prie this year they can’t afford to start a price war with Microsoft and Nintendo until atleast MGS 4 and FF 13 are released.

  12. Zzz says:

Umm microsoft coming with a better library of games….all xbox360 fanboys talk about is Halo Halo Halo…only 1 game…ps3 is coming in with like 30 diff EXCLUSIVE titles

  13. PS3 Sceptic says:

The PS3 has a lot of potential, I’ll admit that. Heck, motorstorm and resistance: fall of man were very fun! I am dismayed however, at the lack of titles released for the system, even to this point, and the fact that the games so far released have only been comparable in quality to their Xbox360 competitors. Both graphically and playwise there has been almost no difference between the 360 and PS3 games, in many cases the 360 has better graphics!

As for the games, Halo is not the only thing on the horizon… Many great games are coming out that will be cross platform or exclusive the 360. These will be available sooner and to a wider customer base, making it even more difficult to justify a purchase of a PS3 as a pure gaming machine.

The Ps3 is a system with great potential, but it is being hampered by its less than stellar launch performance.

  14. Martin says:

Yes Xbox is wining now,but in a couple of years everyone will have hd tvs and the like.In my opinion the Xbox360 was made and brought out to get sales before the ps3 could and they have that done, but the ps3 was made for the future and the future of gaming. It took PlatStation 7 years to make its new consol, and thats why they designed the ps3 to be king for the next 7 years.Until the next PlayStation.

The Xbox will fall in the next 3 to 4 years.Cheap games till then,I think.

  15. Joelteon7 says:

“Right now, competition is driving prices down and encouraging quality game production. ”

I agree with everything in your summary bar quality game production. Since the Sony/Nintendo/Sony war (ie. N64, Dreamcast and PS1 generation) I’d have to say quality of games has decreased. The fine balance between graphics and game-play has been destroyed and games boast their awesome graphics for 10 minutes of gameplay (okay, that’s an exaggeration, but it is a valid point).

This could be the time to turn it around, with generally better games, but newer ones are just old ones with a dip-dab of new content, but not new styles of game-play or anything like that. That’s just a personal feeling on the gaming industry as a whole.

Anywho, onto this. I think all 3 consoles do have advantages and disadvantages, obviously, but the ones with the biggest potential do have to be PS3 and Wii. I say the Wii because it’s difference allows new methods to be approached, more inventive games etc. etc. so there is a greater scope for a bigger variety of things to do, whilst the PS3 boasts it’s goliath-like nature to just…well, be there and waiting. Not to say the 360 doesn’t have any potential, but it’s technology race with the PS3 will last only so long before the PS3 works it’s way ahead and the Wii, obviously not in the tech war, can eat away further at the 360’s sales figures.

As for the future? I think the 360 will be the least sold console of the three. I then think it’ll be a toss-up between the PS3 and Wii as to which one ‘comes first’. Whilst on the one hand people may want to get the technological badn-wagon of the PS3, people won’t be able to say the Wii is out of date because that was never the intention to be tech savvy, just to be tech interesting. The PS3 does need a move-on though.

  16. Walk says:

Poor people that think play 3 is the future y dream about their ” exclusive games “… You only speak with the passion of a frustrated fan.

  17. Ryan says:

    10. You simply have to give it some more time.

That is not a reason to give the PS3 a chance as the same could be applied to any console, including one i could knock up myself.

    09. You cannot deny the power of the cell processor. I predict we will start seeing a great difference between PS3 performance and Xbox 360 performance as the next generation gets into full swing.

Can people stop saying the cell is all powerful as the preformance is not unlimited, but rather has different potential as does the Wii and the 360. By this i mean that if a game is tailored around a console ofcourse it is going to look better than if it ported to another console. The 360 and Wii have access to more system memory which means they can be pushed more in different areas.
If i was to chose a console which i felt has the most potential in terms of processing then i would choose the 360 as it has plenty of processing power and then plenty of room to cashe the files in (RAM memory).

    08. Backward compatibility with the PS2 collection (one of the best console collections in history I might add).

The PS3 has limited backwards compatability, while the Wii has full backwards compatability across all of its console platforms – which i might add has three of the most stellar consoles ever N64, SNES, NES. Also when PS3 forces an upscale on larger televisions the quality of the games can become blurry.

    07. The price will eventually drop. I can’t say when, but it’s unavoidable.

As can the price drop on any console, which means you might as well choose another platform.

    06. Can anyone say “Gran Turismo 5’?

Im sure alot of people can. This game is average i would rather play Mario Kart, Excite Truck, Carmageddon, you know, games that actually do more than a linear, tedious process that involves pressing one button and curving around a track. Kudos to Project gotham for adding swerving even if its been done before (no pun intended).

    05. The PS3 is embracing the future of Bluetooth technology.

As is the Nintendo Wii, which i may add is £200 pound cheaper.

    04. PlayStation Home

When i see this i feel it is just a gimmick, but even worse is that it is a rip off of Nintendo Wiis avatars and 360’s achievments. I also find the Ps home is a long way around of pressing buttons and looking at options.
    03. If Blu-Ray wins the next generation movie battle, the PS3 makes for a cheap Blu-Ray player

But if it does not then the technology is an expensive waste of time.

    02. Unchartered: Drake’s Fortune. This could be the big hit they are waiting for.
Any game could be a big hit for a system – even those annoying tv program games. I also feel the weight of buying a console should not be based on one good game, especially one of such a huge price.

    01. Can anyone say “Gran Turismo 5’?

I discard this point and come to the conclusion that there are less than ten reasons to wait to see what will happen with the PS3.

  18. Semimorphus says:

First of all I’m definitly not a fanboy (I own 360 and PS3 but I would just like to leave my comments:

    10. True, but the Xbox didn’t get any time in his days, it just had the luck of having Halo at launch.

    9. I sure hope so, because up until now they haven’t delivered.

    8. Backward compatibility had/has a lot of problems, my ps1/ps2 favourites looked like shit on the ps3, even after the patch some of them still do.

    7. Let us hope, but not for the near future because of the PS3 selling at a loss

    6. can anyone say Forza 2, DiRT, PGR4 ???

    5. Yea, and it’s really showing that in it’s numerous applications  I mean come on! What kept ‘em from making first-party bleutooth headsets?! That could’ve been huge plus, there aren’t even wired headsets!!!

    4. Now that’s something I’m really looking forward to, hope it’s gonna help Sony in their online endeavours because Xbox Live is way ahead of them at the moment.

    3. very true, recently came across a funny joke about this. I quote: Yea they’re really taking benefits of the blu-ray. That motorstorm was a marathon of a game, with its plentifull modes and all.’

    2. Yea, it looks awesome.

    1. What is so special about GT5? I mean number could’ve been MGS4 that’s at least note-worthy!

  19. Iain777 says:

I have installed ydl linux. And i must add it runs very well. This is another bonus. Microsoft would never allow even windows on the 360. But both companys are more similar than most people would like to admit, very arressive policys. Anyone who says the 360 have more graphics power simply does not understand how the cell cpu and how it can help the gpu.

  20. Daz says:

The PS3 upscales PS2 and 1 games to 1080i now, so that argument is a crock. It also upscales DVDs, allows you to play content from your PC and has free internet. The BD player also plays its movies at 1080P/24 now with the latest firmware and plays uncompressed multi-channel audio. It kills the 360 in terms of ability, now we need the games that are coming out end of this year and early next to shut these 360 drones up.

  21. KingSlash says:

The Talk of the consequences of a monopoly in the gaming industry is a valid point and one i never initally came to. However, monopolies in the gaming market i believe could potentially lead to a positive repecusions in the industry. Some of these could include the fact that with only one dominant firm the extra profits they earn could lead to more innovation within the industry & less confusion in the industry in terms of capabilties of platforms.

  22. IchimonTheGreat says:

360 drones? I wish I could have that mentality too. Then I could also beat up my wife more about why “ESPN has more coverage than FOX”, or whatever arguement I would be stupid enough to get into. Sony is a GREAT company they have had a great run…now they must step aside or drown in the rising tide.

  23. Victor says:

let’s remember what these systems are meant for..
    games..games…games!!!

    blueray/hd-dvd are add ons
360 will be priced the same as ps3 with hd-dvd added!!!

    the games are the point—
    but look what coming out
Does every movie has to have a damn game
pirates of carribean, every comic book hero, and computer generated cartoon.

dont say the 360 has only one good game (GOW)
oblivion, call of duty, crackdown, ghost recon, splinter cell can be played too.

sony to be REALLY competitive is to finally let go of the ps2 and concentrate
on ps3 (but wont if ps2 is still selling)

dont make sony the “innocent” company struggling, sony is a powerhouse and in
reality gaming is secondary… same with Microsoft….Nintendo’s lifeblood is
gamemaking and that is why Wii is making the push on Wii

I am an 360 owner but my cousins have ps2 and dont see any reason to upgrade,
“if there is nothing wrong with it why bother buy a 500+ when 129.00 can buy ps2
with tons of games and no problems?” and in reality they have good points

  24. Grover says:

Look xbox fangirls, you are all stuck in the same old PC gamer mindset, that made the Xbox an economic failure and the X360 is following the same footsteps but at almost double the loss rate (yes 1.3 billion in 18 months is bad.. not good). The main problem is, is that you people think that GOW, COD, Crackdown, Halo and so on are the sort of games that the general gaming audience (140 million ps2 gamers) enjoy playing.

This is so far from reality its hilarious. And for the Wii fans, they are almost on the exact opposite end of the spectrum. Where a serious title has yet to hit that platform – look at the next 6 months of Wii titles coming and tell me those are good titles on the way. Wii is surviving on the desperate 18 million GC upgraders – once this group has finished buying, then watch the sales. If anyone would care to examine the first 12 months of GC sales, they would see a very similar rate – look what happened in years 2 and 3 though.

Fact is, Sony with the PS2 showed how they can deliver _all_ types of genres, and game types to _all_ sorts of gamers. From hardcore FPS fans with games like KillZone, Black, and so on to all the light entertainment of the user interactive games like Buzz, Sing Star, Eye Toy, DDR and so on. Sony also has pretty much everything in between. Few of you little-minded fans realise that most of these top selling franchises are coming to PS3. And most of these franchises are multi-million sellers. So selling a million of one title is great, but selling multiple million sellers is what Sony is good at – I cant believe the ignorance of last generation especially from the fangirls commenting here.

Finally, the reason the PS3 sales arent as great as many expected, is that the PS2 IS STILL SELLING STRONGLY – almost as well as last year! Once these PS2 buyers/owners then decide to move to PS3, it is THEN you will see the market demand of the PS3 increase substantially. Ignorant people whom deny the 140 million PS2’s bought are simply living in their own fantasy land… usually a Nintendo or MS one. Its funny though how all the arguments in the world are used to ignore the fact the PS2 is actually outselling ALL next-gen consoles globally :)

  25. William says:

On a system level, the Wii is not in the same league as Xbox 360 and PS3. When Wii first came out, I considered it to be a novelty.. in the end, it seems it has become more than a simple novelty, but it will definitely never be meant for serious gaming. I actually think it’s a mistake to try and bring serious gaming to the Wii. I see the Nintendo console as more of a fun for the whole family kind of system.

As far as the PS3, people think it’s a joke when I say give it some time.. I think part of the problem is that people want tangible items they can put their hands on .. we live in fast society and people don’t want to wait. A year from now, people will be singing a new tune though.

  26. Liam says:

I have played both. And got rid of my 360 whilst it still trades for a reasonable price, as the Elite has got me thinking microsoft are lost and starting to look scared. An i acknowledge the PS3 has few stella games at the mo. but a few points:
    1. Blu ray is winning the format wars. so much that blockbusters is upping their Blu ray stock for rental.
    2. 360 has great games, but has been out for over a year, so is to be expected.
They are now relying on Halo3, and the beta showed very little change from halo two.Mass effect – little big planet, halo 3 – Metal gear 4, Warhawk…Lair and so on. We are seeing some great games on the way to PS3 as well as 360.
    3. Developers will begin to take advantage of the cell. It may or may not be a great processor, but look what they could squeeze out of PS2′2 233mhz chip? God of war anyone?
    4. When i got my 360, i was constantly expecting a crash, or red ring of light. When i booted my PS3, that very gentle hum gave me confidence that it was solid and reliable.
    5. Tiniest little detail, but try ripping an MP3 cd to the 360, or ripping off any storage format other than an audio cd. PS3 will copy and back up anything you throw at it.
    6. Gamer points are great! Now PS3 getting trophies, allowing you to organize them and display them in your own space. We’ll see if a visual representation is preferred over the simplicity of the “gamer card”.
    7. Wii? I’m sorry, but any man holding something in his hands and swinging in round whilst playing kiddie games just looks dodgy. Great idea, but wears off.
    8. To prove im not a fanboy – Microsoft have MONEY! I agree its the games that will make the system. And when you have money – you can buy the exclustivity of those games. Blu ray is winning – the next xbox can adopt it. cell processor proves to be amazing? Microsoft will better it. I want to see Sony hold it for another generation. But with Microsofts financial resources, it will take more than fancy tech to push the PS3.
    9. Also, i do believe Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot with windows Live! Now you can get all the benefits of the Live experience including gamertag and points, but on a system you can upgrade and eventually fit a blu ray drive and HD DVD drive into. All good Microsoft games and any half decent 3rd party games alway come to P.C. And pc’s can connect to the latest Hd t.v’s and take centre stage in the living room if you so wish. So i think a PS3 for Non pc games, and a pc for all the things a 360 does and the ability to keep upgrading. my opinion.

  27. I luv Sorny says:

Right on Grover, you da man.

I own a gamecube (cheap plasticy piece of crap) , an xbox (great as a media player in the living room once it’s modded) and a PS2. Only the PS2 has consistently given me hours of gaming joy over the last four or five years. The PS2 has such a huge library of games in every imaginable genre , no other console can touch it. Xbox lame-o fangirls , where is the competition against such fantastic and innovative games as Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus, Buzz or DDR?? If i wanted to play half-assed fps games all the time then maybe i’d join you in xbox halo 2 is the roxor fantasy land.

  28. I luv Sorny says:

I own a Gamecube (cheap plasticy piece of crap) , Xbox (great media player once it’s modded) and a PS2. Only the PS2 has given me years of FUN as a game console , which is what I bought it for in the first place. The PS2 has such a huge and varied library of games , and is still selling thanks to Sonys’ policy of not dropping support for it like Micro$haft did once their crapbox 360 launched.

Honestly where is the competition to the PS2?? What other console has such brilliant games as Katamari Damacy, Shadow of the Colossus, DDR or Buzz just to name a few?? The PS2 rocks because of the brilliant games available , and the PS3 will win for the same reason. Just give it a year or so and we’ll see what the Japanese game developers can do with it. Meanwhile the poor Xbox 360 fangirls will still be returning their rubbish hardware to Micro$haft to be repaired yet again.

  29. Liam says:

    micro$haft. lmao
