You would assume that a player like Tom Brady would have already been on the cover of a football game, but he tends to get overlooked. I’m not even a Brady fan myself, being a hard-core Buffalo Bills fan, but he does deserve some recognition as one of the best quarterbacks in recent history. Tom will be featured on the cover of Backyard Football 2008, a best-selling kid’s football game. It may not be the cover of Madden, but it’s a start. The press release follows the break.

August 8, 2007, New York - Humongous, Inc. announced today that Tom Brady, New England Patriots all-star quarterback and two-time Super Bowl MVP, will be the cover athlete for Backyard Football ‘08, the newest iteration of the best-selling kid’s football game franchise. Brady was overwhelmingly voted “favorite NFL player” in a poll of Backyard Sports fans conducted late last year on backyardsports.com. “I am very excited to be part of the Backyard Football team,” said Brady. “Working with kids is always great and representing Backyard Football is a fantastic way to introduce the fun of the game to the next generation of fans. I especially like seeing myself and other pro players as kids in the game-it’s really funny and brings back great memories of playing football as a child.”

He’s such a good QB that without the best kicker in recent history (or maybe ever) he wouldn’t have a ring, considering twice the Pats nearly lost, and Brady didn’t give Vinitari short kicks to win the game.

Then again, I can forgive you for being a Bill fan. To me, as a Colts fan, that rivalry is long in the past. Brady will always earn the hatred of Colts fans, though.

Too bad its not the cover of Madden, but I guess I can settle for Young being hurt this year…

I would guess the poll would turn out differently now, though. Brady allowed everyone to talk bad about his receivers when he passed to so many of them, and never once defended them against the criticism, in spite of the fact that if you throw TD passes to 11 different recievers, you obviously have 11 people who can catch and run with the ball on an NFL level.

People also tend to follow fads, and at the end of last season, LT was a fad, who probably would have won the voting. By the time it was Super Bowl time, Manning was a fad and probably would have won voting. On a side note, I think fans of teams should be mad at this. Here, around Indianapolis, Fridays before big games, we have “Blue Friday” and everyone wears blue. Fair weather fans get to me, you know, the kind that wasn’t for a winning team 2 year ago when they were 2-14.

It would be interesting to have a poll 3 times a year, before the season starts, before post season starts, and before the Super Bowl for who the most popular player is. Brady won it late last year, when the Pats were being talked about for winning it all again. I wonder how much of an effect that had on him being the favorite player.

I’m sure he could have been on Madden more than once, but chances are, he’s like some of the others who could have been but weren’t…history shows you have a good chance of getting hurt if you’re on that cover!
