The Orange Box on PS3 an Unplayable Port?

the orange box The Orange Box on PS3 an Unplayable Port?

A recent 1UP preview of the PlayStation 3 version of Valve’s The Orange Box wasn’t the overwhelmingly positive piece you would expect it to be. In the preview, David Ellis refers to the game – which is being ported by an EA team, as opposed to Valve itself – as suffering from “a number of technical flaws, which at best merely hinder gameplay and at worst make the experience downright unplayable. Framerate is a consistent issue throughout the Half-Life series of games included in The Orange Box.”

While Valve founder Gabe Newell has referred to the PS3 as a “waste of everybody’s time,” I can’t fathom his apparent disdain for the system having anything to do with this situation.

Portal is a fine port according to the preview, while Team Fortress 2 wasn’t playable due to server connection errors – not an uncommon occurrence in the Xbox 360 version of the game.

This is truly unfortunate, as The Orange Box is one of the greatest buys of the year, and it looks like PS3 owners will be getting the shaft with another poorly done port.

  1. ATTENTION ALL PS3 OWNERS: I am calling for a Boycott of the game “The Orange Box”.

The game will run at a pathetic 30 frames per second. Valve team dumped the PS3 development off on an internal EA development team so Valve could focus on the Xbox360 version. Gabe Newell hates the PS3. He’s been killing the Sony console all year in the media. They obviously don’t care about the PS3 and the quality of the product that they give PS3 owners.

I can’t put all the blame on Valve. EA needs to take some of the heat for this as well. They gave us a disgusting excuse for a game in Madden 08. Another 30fps disaster.

All PS3 owners need to unite on this. If we don’t, it will never end. Gabe Newell needs to get hit in the pockets. Boycott “The Orange Box”! Do NOT buy anything that Gabe Newell is a part of. He is cheating his art and he is cheating PS3 owners. Let’s show Gabe Newell, Valve & EA that we do matter. We are the only reason that game companies exist. If we stop buying crap, they will stop making crap.

Don’t give your money to people that don’t care about you! Boycott The Orange Box!

    Thanks, Superdynamite

As a gamer with all 3 consoles, and planning to get this game for my PS3, since my Xbox is getting repaired, this completely pisses me off. First off, I want to tell Valve to piss off, I will not by another game from this company. Second, EA has proven that they are nothing more then Microsoft’s bitch, so screw them too, all their Madden games sucks, and I will be buying from other companies. Ubisoft, Infiniti Ward, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Epic, etc…..they will get my money.

  3. used cisco says:

    @superdynamite,

Welcome to what gamecube owners faced for years. I feel for you but as you’ll soon begin to realize, the power of a console has little to do with the quality of the ports. If you don’t have the install base, your console will NOT be the lead platform. If you do not have the lead platform, you WILL get crappy ports. Period. This is hard to swallow for PS3 owners since in many cases they were also PS2 owners and the PS2 was the lead platform for a huge number of last gen games.
Now it appears the 360 is the lead platform in most cases. It sucks, but this is nothing new. Right now the PS3 is the gamecube of this generation. I just feel bad for The Orange Box because its such a great game(s) and it may get a bad reputation if someone only plays it on PS3. Too bad.

  4. Norbit says:

According to reviews on Gamespy and IGN the problems have been exaggerated by 1UP. In most of Half Life 2 they couldn’t see any difference between the PS3 and 360 versions.

They both say however that some parts of it see a noticeable drop in frame rate now and again but nothing like what 1up are reporting. The IGN review also points out that a PS3 problem area was also problematic on the PC version.

Used Cisco said: ‘Now it appears the 360 is the lead platform in most cases. It sucks, but this is nothing new. Right now the PS3 is the gamecube of this generation.’

You seem to have missed the reports surfacing that devs are going to make the PS3 lead platform because its easier to port from that to the 360 and PC than the other way around.

  6. used cisco says:

    @Norbit,

I saw the report, but it was only one developer and until we start seeing it in the games, it doesn’t mean much. Just look at Orange Box. Its a total waste of a great game.

  7. Madden08, Orange Box + everything Gabe Newell does is anti-PS3. That is enough!

He’s actually tell you that he won’t put any time into PS3.

    DON’T BUY HIS GAMES!

  8. Norbit says:

    @Used Cisco

Someone at Sony (either Tretton or Stringer I think) actually said in a recent interview they knew a lot of devs were making the PS3 lead platform.

If its easier to do that then its obvious that is what is going to happen.

  9. Norbit says:

    @ Used Cisco again

BTW what are you talking about with ‘a total waste of a great game’?

Did you not read the other 2 reviews I posted? There is some slowdown on one game in the Orange Box. That’s it. 1up obviously went apeshit on it to get people to visit their site.

  10. used cisco says:

    @Norbit,

What else is Stringer/Tretton going to say? That 360 will likely be the lead platform for the majority of developers going forward? Not a chance, even though thats the case. Look at companies like EA, Activision and Capcom. They are all getting games going on 360 first. The PS3 is just to complicated. Sure a few will be on the PS3 but the majority will be using the PS3 to port to from the 360.

As for the links, yeah, I’ve read them. I’ve read a lot about TOB on PS3 and its clearly the inferior version, to the point that its not as good a game. Thats a major bummer.

Ths ps3 is a piece of shit like gabe said u sony fags could have spent ut monney getting a direct x 10 gaming pc but u had to get a console which is very hard to develop for instead, its hard to devlop for because there arent many programmes and games atm which use multi cores bar CRYSIS (eat that fags).

  12. @Shadowmancer

    XBox360 premium $400 + XBox Elite $400 + HD-DVD Add-on $200 = Moron!

    PS3/Blu-ray/Web Browser $400 or $600 = Smart (10 year system)

XBox HD (Q4 2008) Price $???? $600??? Funny thing is, Microsoft can’t put out a system that lasts longer than 2 years. It’s ok though, Keep giving your money to Microsoft. Bill Gates needs another $100 Billion.

Maybe you should go out and buy a $99 HD-DVD player. When you get home and open the box you’ll find out it’s NOT Full HD! Only 1080i. LOL. Now you’ll get to spend $30 on DVDs and not be able to watch them in Full HD. LOL.

I gotta hand it to Shadowmancer… way to pay attention in math class. LOL

  15. Averre says:

Quite a few PS3 titles will run at that framerate, this has been discussed many times on many different sites…it’s common knowledge.

It’s best to buy the Orange Box for the PC or the 360 and instead boycott the PS3.

  16. Xboxlenny says:

Get an Xbox 360, problem solved. or like Shadomancer says, get a PC with a super GPU.

There is gonna still be crappy Xbox 360 ports to the PS3. its called $$. a game costs millions of dollars to develop, can you blame them. The cost to start from scratch is madness, when they can take a garbage port and make it worse.

PS3 does have many great games, just dont expect to see many good ports. hoever some have been good, again it is how the developer decides to do it. So Valve did cheap out, and EA, well ya i dont have any good to say on them either.

  17. Averre says:

Also, the PS3 will -not- be lead system anytime soon…and Norbit i wish you would stop throwing around your wild flights of fancy as proof.

The PS3 is DEAD LAST in European and U.S. sales….DEAD LAST, it has been beaten out by systems with ‘inferior’ hardware, it’s been out for a little over a year and has done squat except lower it price over and over again…reason? because it isn’t selling….hell, not they give away Spider-Man 3 movies with the systems…a giveway at this stage is not a good sign.

MGS4 isn’t going to save it, Haze isn’t going to save it, Final Fantasy isn’t going to save it and HOME for sure isn’t going to save it….it’s an overcomplicated piece of hardware that simply didn’t need to be that way, more than one developer has commented on this very thing.

Let’s not forget that Sony is losing developer support, or the developers are starting to lean heavily towards multi-platform.

The PS3 as leader?!? dude, there not even close to second place.

  18. Shadowmancer says:

Averre is right the ps3 (failstation) has already lost the console wars mainly due to the fact that the console itself it too damn expensive to buy in shops and it is too expensive to make sony relises that they atm aren’t making as much money as they hoped and are relying on cheap pc ports they have also produced dumbed down ps3’s that are cheaper but fail in areas such as backwards compatibity, and that the games that are on it suck, anybody remember lair everybody thought that was going to be awesome turned out that it sucked major, btw their aren’t enough ps3 only games, the pc this has more released more games that are too powerful for modern consoles e.g. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Crysis, they also copied the wii motion sensor idea and put it in their controller and called sixasis and ditched dual shock 4 tech in the process, the only saving grace of the ps3 is that it is the cheapest blu ray (fail name) player on the market but hd dvd has even cheaper players so therefore sony has lost again just like in the 80’s with betamax.

  19. Norbit says:

    Averre you are an imbecile.

More and more developers are making the PS3 lead platform and eventually it will be lead platform on all multiplatform games. XboxLenny inadvertently backed up my argument. The reason the PS3 will become the universal lead platform is because of money. Its easier to port from the PS3 to the 360 than the other way around. Unless you really are as dumb as your posts make you seem you will realise that ‘easier’ also means ‘quicker’ and therefore ‘cheaper’.

Deal with it and grow up.

BTW you do realise that the PS3 has sold as well as the 360 did in its first year dont you dimwit? That’s with no big games and a high price and only being released in the EU 7 months ago so its sold as well as the 360 with less time on sale worldwide and with no real reason yet for people to buy one. I love how you boast about the 360 having sold more units in the EU than the PS3 yet you fail to realise what a fuckwit that makes you look because the 360 has been on sale there for 17 months longer.

The PS3 has actually sold an average of 329k units per month in Pal regions since launch. The 360 has sold an average of 181k. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the PS3 is selling twice as quickly in Pal regions than the 360 and I’m sure you are aware that sales are increasing. Whats even more impressive about that is that the 360 has been on sale in Pal regions for 2 holiday seasons yet the PS3 is selling twice as well on average yet it hasnt had a single holiday season there yet.

Then you have Japan where the PS3 has sold an average of 120k per month compared to 20k for the 360. Sure in the US the 360 has sold an average of 366k per month since launch compared to 216k for the PS3 but thats soon going to change because next year there is the square root of fuck all being released exclusively on the 360 compared to all of this on the PS3:

    Metal Gear Solid 4
    Gran Turismo 5
    Final Fantasy 13
    Tekken 6
    LittleBigPlanet
    Killzone 2
    L.A. Noire
    The Agency
    Coded Arms: Assault
    Eight Days
    FIA World Touring Car Championship
    The Getaway 3
    Ni-Oh
    Red Dead Revolver 2
    Heavy Rain
    Infamous
    White Knight Chronicles
    Haze

And here is the ever so exiting lineup of 2008 360 exclusives:

    Banjo-Kazooie 3
    Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2
    Dogtag
    Fable 2
    Magna Carta 2
Mobile Ops: The One Year War
    Ninja Gaiden 2
    Too Human

  20. Shadowmancer says:

Norbit all those games suck there where the fuck is CRYSIS and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Bioshock and Supreme Commander and Command and conquer and World of warcraft, etc nowhere in ur list cos the ps3 is console full of aids and fail.

  21. used cisco says:

    @norbit,

Most of your argument is based off ONE developer and the idea that its easier to port from PS3 to 360 than the other way around. The reason the Burnout developer was such big news is because he is nearly unique. Very few developers are currently using the PS3 as the lead SKU in multiplatform games. Thats a fact.
As for the whole “its easier to port FROM the PS3″? Well, the only reason its true is because the PS3 is a bitch to dev on and the 360 is comparibly cheaper and easier. Thats not a good thing for the PS3, let me tell you. With the install base advantage the 360 has, and with how much quicker games can get up and running on it while developing in tandem with PC (something you can’t do easily on the PS3) its just not sensible that devs would shift focus to the PS3. The only games the PS3 is really getting are ones that were started before developers realized it would not be the biggest seller. With each month, more of its exclusives are going multiplatform. With each month, more big games are getting delayed. With each month we have more game released that are inferior on the platform. I’m not happy about these things but they are undeniable. The PS3 is powerful, but it is hurting, and I’m afraid you may be experiencing some serious denial.

  22. Averre says:

I didn’t realize that Norbit would break down to petty insults against me…i guess i touched that sensitive fanboy nerve of his.

I would like to state for the record that i have never once had to insult you to get my point across, i’m stating fact…all you have to do is open your eyes.

For a system to be a “Leader” it must first sell units which Sony has failed to do in Europe and the States…you see most of the gamers don’t really give a toss if it’s Blu-Ray or not or what type of hardware it has…they want games.

A system is only as good as the games that come out for it.

The PS3 released it’s “AAA Title”, the one that fanboys such as yourself -swore- would elevate the sales of the PS3…Heavenly Sword….it failed, while it received a decent score, it was hardly what people were expecting.

As for the 360, well i won’t bring up Halo 3 since that seems to bother you, but it’s o.k. because i don’t need to…Mass Effect…a fantastic success for the 360 that scored far higher than expected.

The games you listed for the PS3 most don’t care about or outright bashed them (Killzone 2)…except for MGS4, FF 13, GT 5 the rest will be mediocre at best sales wise.

We’ll see what the sales of the PS3 are after the Christmas Rush, yes?

Gabe Newell is a Fake and a Fraud. If you own a PS3, you should Boycott him. When a person comes along that cheats PC gamers the way Gabe Newell Cheats PS3 owners, I’ll let you know. Then We will Boycott that person together as well. We’re in this together. If someone as despicable as Gabe Newell comes along and cheats his fans, customers, his art & profession, we should all join together so things like that won’t happen in the future. Gamers are a family that need to stick together. Corporations in the gaming industry would be nothing without gamers. If Gabe doesn’t care about putting out the BEST PRODUCT posible then we as gamers in the gaming community should all have no use for him.

Let me ask you something… Have you ever stood up to anyone in your life? Do you have a backbone or are you just a lost sheep that follows around the herd? Now is the time to grow a pair! Don’t let some slob walk all over you and down grade the things that you enjoy because if you do it will never end. It will move on to PC Gaming, 360, Wii, PS3, it will spread across them all. As soon as the Developers see that they can just do whatever the hell they want without anyone saying anything, we’re the ones that will get screwed over and over and over again.

We’re in this together. Stand up and be a man for the gaming community and fellow gamers. Liking or disliking a particular console has nothing to do with it. Open your eyes. It’s us and them!

“For those still deluded to the fact the PS3 will become lead console on multiplatform games here is Nick Channon from Criterion talking about developing Burnout Paradise:”

Just keep quoting the guy from Criterion, cuz thats all you have.

The 360 is clearly the lead platform for the MAJORITY of multiplatform releases and it will continue to be for the forseeable future, no matter how many burnout games there are. Also, as its pretty clear that most of the multiplatform games look and play better on the 360, games like Madden, Lost Planet, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box, Oblivion, etc. So yeah, keep clinging to that Criterion quote if it makes you feel better.

  27. Norbit says:

“Just keep quoting the guy from Criterion, cuz thats all you have.”

I suppose you misseed the guy from Midway I quoted earlier?

I quoted the guy from Criterion again because it was a different interview.

Brian Hastings from Insomniac (not owned by Sony) also went into detail about how ports are easier to go from PS3 to 360 than the other way around and why that will mean the PS3 will become lead platform. He actually said that about 8 months ago.

Gmaes have started on the 360 and ported to the PS3 for the simple reason that it was easier to do that because people didnt know how to use the PS3 properly but that has changed. It is a fact that it is easier to port from the PS3 to the 360. I dont know why that annoys you so much but you are an imbecile if you keep on ignoring it.

BTW I love how you say Oblivion and Lost Planet play better on the 360 than the PS3. Anyone who isnt a total retard knows that Oblivion is actually a damn sight better on the PS3 than on the 360. Check it out. That is hard cast iron fact. It is also pretty obvious to anyone who isnt a Sony hating 360 fanboy c**t that Lost Planet hasnt even been released on the PS3 yet because it was only announced about a month ago.

    Ignorant prick.

  28. Sorry cisco but…

Sales don’t lie. You can try to propetuate the Microsoft propaganda all you want but the fact is, M$ has already given up on the 360, Blu-Ray is absolutely crushing HD-DVD and PS3 has pulled into the lead in weekly sales for the last 3 weeks including Black Friday.

The 360 is dead in the eyes of M$. M$ is launching the new XBoxHD Q4 2008. Save your money because with 2 TV tuners, internal HDDVD (or Blu-Ray if HDD is dead) & internal WiFi, you’re gonna be somewhere around the $600 range.

    That’s ot! Deal with it!

“It is a fact that it is easier to port from the PS3 to the 360. I dont know why that annoys you so much but you are an imbecile if you keep on ignoring it.”

What you’re ignoring is that the only reason this is true is because its so challenging to port from the 360 to the PS3 because the PS3 is so hard to dev for.
Thats why third party games like Orange box will almost always be inferior on the PS3. Thats a fact that its probably pretty hard to deal with.

As for your Oblivion example, guess again. Site review aggregators show exactly FOUR perfect reviews for Oblivion on PS3 and about SEVENTEEN perfect reviews for it on 360. Also, if you read reviews for the PS3 version, you’ll often hear them mention “Slightly annoying performance issues that don’t exist on the 360 version.” All this and Oblivion had over a year more time in development than the 360 version. And extra year and they STILL couldn’t get rid of performance issues. So I’ll ignore your “its better on PS3 “fact”"

As for the guy from Insomniac, give me a break, are you kidding, do they even make games for anyone besides Sony? As if they would say anything else when doing so would be biting the hand that feeds them. Wake up man. You can only bury your head in the sand for so long and ignore the shitty ports the PS3 has been getting and will be getting. Just keep waiting for the PS3 to eventually become the lead platform for third parties. I hope you’re pretty patient.

And as for the guy that says MS will release a new gaming platform in 2008, well, honestly I’m not sure who is more delusional, you or Norbit. I will say though, you too are pretty good representatives for Sony, having an unquestioning love of a platform thats getting crap from third parties. Keep it up, maybe they’ll hire your for PR work.

  31. Actually, The PS3 is easier to develop for because it is an “Open Platform” like a PC.

The Devs are all set up for PS2 & 360 so some of them are being lazy with the change over.

It’s ok though because the New XBoxHD is launching in Q4 2008. That will be an open Platform as well. Fully equipped with WiFi, a spin off of the Cell (toshiba bought the rights to produce the Cell from Sony last month), an internal HD Drive (HD-DVD or Blu-Ray depending how the format war goes) & 2 TV Tuners.

The lazy Developers will all change their toon when the only system is an Open Platform, and that will be next year (besides the baby-game consoles like Wii of course).

    Thanks.

  33. @Xboxlenny

What happened was, a Toshiba exec spilt the beans about the project. See Here: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18072

    Is it true? 100%!

After Toshiba slipped with the info, they tried to recant their statement. Then after recanting, they recanted the recant. LOL.

Anyway, The XBoxHD is launching Q4 2008 (Christmas 2008). You also have to remember that Microsoft attributes the success of the 360 to XBoxLIVE and NOT to the actual console. That is why it is easy for M$ to move on to the next system and so easily dump the 360.

Microsoft even hired the guy who designed HOME for the Playstation network so he could design a spin-off of HOME for the XBoxHD. On top of that, Toshiba purchased the right to manufacture the CELL processor from Sony last month. The XBoxHD will be equipped with a spin off of the CELL, Internal HD-DVD (or Blu-ray depending on if HD-DVD is able to tread water for the next few months), Dual TV tuner & internal WiFi. Probably for a grand total of somewhere in the range of $600 depending on how much M$ wants to lose on each system sold. So in actuality it could range from $579 to $699. You have to remember, the dual Tuner alone costs $200 wholesale. HDDVD Drive (1080p) around $200. WiFi, $75-$100. That’s $500 right there without anything else – case, LED’s, HDMI, ports, packaging, cables, controler, headset, Blutooth system, etc. – I was being ultra-conservative by saying $600. But hey, Microsoft is made of money with money to burn so who knows. They might decide to take a $200 loss on each system. It’s no inconceivable.

  34. PS. The above link is from 2007. The date is a misprint

Being used to something and learning to adapt are 2 different things… I can play both a PC and a Console. One thing I’ve learned through playing FPS’s on a console is knowing that you cannot flick a controller 180 degrees with the same accuracy as a mouse.

I laugh at your comments that the PS3 is more powerful than a PC. Show me some proof and maybe you’ll wipe the smurk off my face, but good luck… as I don’t think you’ll find any.

Even at the time of launching, the PS3 failed to impress, with a poor games catalogue and backwards compatibilty issues (Yes, I can still play an 18 year old DOS based 256 Colour Game on my humble PC) and it was hardly cheap…. add in the cost of a decent 1080p HD TV to get decent image quality and you may as well have bought a fairly decent PC for the same money.

Have you not heard of Quad Core? 45nm processors aka Penryn / Nehalem?

Lets also talk about the rate of developement that PC hardware goes through in a 2 year cycle?

    Who’s the Moron?

Hasn’t u guys ever heard of moores law, the theory that every year technology doubles itself in terms of power and speed, the idea of a 10 year old console seems stupid to me because in ten years time the fifth x box will be out, sega might produce a new mega drive or dreamcast, nintendo will release loads of consoles but sony will still be stuck with the psp and the ps3 which they say will last for 10 years, pure idocy and fail, the idea wouln’t suck as much if it were possible to upgrade the console, i.e. put to gpu’s in sli (consoles still can’t do that), the notion that the ps3 is an open port to develop for is stupid also, because all console are fixed hardware and therefore there is limitations to wat developers can do with games, the pc on the other hand is open as there are a lot of hardware out in the market e.g. physics cards (consoles don’t have this either)to develop games for.

Umm… You’re forgeting one thing ol’ great wise one…

The greatest selling System of all time is a 10 year system; The PS2!

I guess that pretty much destroys your insane and useless theory.

You know what you can do with your theory? Print it on a nice new piece of paper and the next time you have to go to the bathroom you can use it to wipe!

    LOL.

PS. Which one sounds correct to you: (a)”Hasn’t u guys ever heard of moore’s law” or (b)”Haven’t you ever heard of Moore’s Law”.

a or b? I’ll give you a hint. Hint: You can only pick one.

Actually, the greatest selling system of all time is the NES. Also known as the Famicom.

    You’ve gone a bit quiet?

Did you even click the links I Posted for you? No? Oh! So the 180 degree argument is in the toilet.

#2. Give me some info on your computer and how much was it? Chip? Mem? etc…

    Thanks.
