The Legend of Zelda: Serenity’s Edge, A Game Idea…

I stumbled across an interesting forum post at WiiLoaded where a gamer was discussing his ideas for a new Zelda game. He’s asking for others to join in with ideas as he attempts to further develop his ideas on the topic. I’d assume it would be extremely difficult to pitch something like this to Nintendo, but you never know. The internet has become a powerful think tank in the past few years. Anything that gains a lot of support can become possible overnight. If you are creative, post some ideas for this guy. The thought of coming up with ideas and pitching them to Nintendo for a new Zelda game might be somewhere out there in the dream world, but dreams do come true sometimes. WiiLoaded is also an interesting place to find out information on anything related to Nintendo and the Wii. His original post follows the break.

I’ve been recently working on gameplay ideas and a plot for a new Zelda game which I’m tentatively calling “The Legend of Zelda: Serenity’s Edge.” I’m very serious about this project and will try and pitch it to Nintendo once I have some more concrete details and a near complete storyline. In the meantime I thought I’d start a thread that I can update with story details and Ideas as the project progresses. Also I want any and all ideas that anyone would like to see in a future Zelda game, I don’t care how crazy it is or how simple or how complex they are, throw them at me and I’ll try and incorporate it somehow. The more we have, the more nintendo might actually take notice of it.

I’ll explain now, that this Zelda game is definitely not going to be on the Wii. This is a next generation game and is going to more or less break the Zelda mold and breathe some fresh life into the series, which is something that I think it definitely needs. The story at the moment will have a lot of links to Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask and also tie in with Wind Waker towards the end.

To give you a quick idea of what I envision, imagine a rough cross between Ocarina of Time, Oblivion, Assassins Creed and Lord of the Rings. It is going to be a much more mature and violent game than previous entries in the series. In the first five minutes of the game alone, Princess Zelda is killed, Gannondorf truly takes over Hyrule, Link loses his piece of the triforce, and the Master Sword is destroyed…I’ve got a feeling that isn’t going to go down to well with some people but that’s their problem.

Anyway I’ll leave it at that for now and give you a “novelized” version of the opening cinematic of the game…hope you enjoy and get those ideas flowing…

Ganondorf ruling, fine. Master Sword broken up, fine. Link losing his tri-force piece, fine. Zelda dying? Forgive me for being very much mistaken, but the game kinda hinges on Zelda being very much alive, which I’m led to believe is the very opposite of dead. If anything, Link should be the one to die. It opens it up for another main character lead.

Of course, tying in with Wind Waker’s history and Ocarina of Time’s themes, I can suspect a real deus ex machima with the whole Hero of Time thing, where the solution ends in an epic fight which restores the time-line, preventing all of the above from happening.

I don’t like anything that takes the easy deus ex machima route unless it’s incorporated immensely well.

No - have Zelda die, and the body put in a cursed place so that Link will visit the twilight world and find both princesses talking there.

Get a twighlight version of your sword, and explore the twilight to find a way to step into the light realm again.

When Link enters the light world, the twilight sword will lead Link to a sacred grove, which will bless the sword so that it cuts through darkness.

Link will need to collect all the tears of light and all the melodies for his ocarina, obtained in a mountain water temple.

After that, he would go to each sacred spring grove and use the tears of light - and activate them with the appropriate melody encoded on a rock nearby.

Grove by grove he lays seige to Gannondorf, and then breaks into the castle to knock his piece of the triforce off of Gannondorf’s other gauntlet, but then be teleported somewhere else.

In this other place he will find what he needs to bless Zelda’s burial place, and perform the ceremony in the place between worlds to bring back Zelda.

Then he will obviously have to fight Gannondorf and whoop his evil backside again.

no thanks. hardly anyone in the big scheme of things really wants a truly mature zelda game.

take your fanfiction bullshit and go to hell.

 I laugh at your stupidity!

  6. austin says:

that might go good except how about having a lot more villans like having three that would be neat and more monsters to use link’s abilities on and having him do more acrobatics and one last thing it should not be more mature it should be rated E 10+

  7. cookin_with_gas says:

Hey guys you’re being a bit overly critical. I mean this is obviously only going to be a very small part at the start of the game, I’m sure this guy isn’t stupid enough to know that he can just pitch this and everything will be good. He’s probbably got heaps more ideas on the rest of the story and things like that so maybe you should wait and see what else he comes up with before you dismiss it.

  8. Joelteon7 says:

    @ cookin

If you’re developing a multi-million (insert currency) game as part of a franchise, you need to be critical.

Besides, there’s a differnce between adding stuff and making changes and making it a whole other game, which he clearly wants to do with this “destroy everything we knew at the beginning and go from there on out with a new game”. He really might as well call it something completely different, because only the names he have used would keep it to be a Zelda game.

The idea’s are of course good, don’t get me wrong (especially if you read more of the context of his post) but…nah, he just wants another game set in the universe that is Zelda, NOT a new Zelda game.

don’t fool yourself into thinking you have a good idea

  10. Gemini says:

If anyone thinks about killing Zelda i will slit every throat that lets that happen!!!!!

I will of course make it E10+ and sing ocarina songs while i do this…..

  11. LemonManX says:

Well, I see lotsa flames. Anyway. I liked the idea, it sounds different and lets face it… Nintendo need to take a new road for Zelda especially after that flop of a game, Twilight Princess.

If they don’t do this then I definitely hope they try something different. Because they need it. Mario and Metroid both are continuing to improve, Zelda has taken a step backwards after the awesomeness of Wind Waker.

  12. rello says:

Why not make gannon turn link to the darkside, wow what an excellent idea. Why not have Gannon take link to the darkside & have link’s son save Hyrule & his dad. He can use his zelda jedi power’s in saving everything. why not even have a sad ending & let gannon rule Hyrlue & make a second part continue. A very famous successful use this method was shenemue on dreamcast. That was such an amazing story. I hope nintendo give me millions for my idea here. Copyright 12 Novemember on my idea

  13. Joelteon7 says:

@ Lemmon - You proved my point though. “It sounds different” because it’s not a Zelda game, only the names used have any bearing and relation to it. Though, don’t get me wrong, I still liked the idea.

@ rello - But then you’d be rehasing a game that people have played bef…wait, hang on, that’ll work perfectly for Zelda. Do that!

  14. cookin_with_gas says:

Well if you guys want to play the same type of Zelda game over and over again why don’t you just keep playing the ones that are already out? The series needs something fresh to keep it going. Look at it in the long run, they can’t just keep making the same game with a different name and slightly different story, the series needs to evolve and move beyond what it was ten years ago.

  15. Joelteon7 says:

It has been evolving, but the changes suggested will stop it being a Zelda game. I’m all for fresh (clearly what they intended with Wind Waker and what they achieved with Ocarina) but the changes are NOT Zelda, it’s really simple.

    Here’s an example.

Let’s take Mario et al. However, the Princess cannot be rescued because shes been taking across by Koopa. In stead of running and jumping, Mario challenges Koopa to a football match and if he wins, he rescues the Princess.

Gone are the platforming mechanics and in is a completely different game with the only similarities being the names.

Ok, so he’s keeping it supposedly-within genre, but the essence is the same; he’s making a NEW game, not a new Zelda game. Evolution is fantastic, but only when implemented well. Look at Sonic and Mario. One of them glided blissfully into 3d and has gone on pretty much from strength to strength with little evolution. The other evolved so much it made it self indeniably piss-poor (Shadow the Hedgehog).

    anything is news on sunday.

  18. William says:

pretty much. It’s extremely rare for a brand new groundbreaking gaming news story to surface on a Sunday

  19. cookies says:

the way i see it, your story takes to abrupt of a departure from what zelda is but i have got my own idea, something like a cross between zelda and oblivion, but its not exactly a zelda game, but still is in a way, you see you dont play as link you can choose from a slew of races from the zelda universe and the entire thing takes place in a hyrule ish place, but its during a huge war where link is already a little older, im thinkin late 20’s or 30’s but you play as someone who is kind of following in his footsteps sorta thing where sometime you might even fight beside link and somehow in the end you come to be a legend like he is, anyhow just an idea, i think that would be pretty cool, but dont get me wrong or anything i wouldnt want the entire franchise to go in this direction cause i still like playing as link but maybe just for one game

  20. Mike says:

Actually, now that I have read the full idea at

    http://www.wiiloaded.com/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Serenitys-Edge-t-12632-wii

I have to say the idea looks quite good.

Pitch it at Nintendo, but before you do, get a Nintendo staff’s email address off the web, then substitute the Zelda creator’s name for the staff’s name with the rest of the email address.

If you send this via normal Nintendo feedback you will get an automated Disney style response; hardly surprising given the similarities between Mario and Mickey (at least in their voice, dress sense and fighting the villian to save the girl).

  21. alex says:

why not have the game have multipile ending’s. so that way we can all be happy.
so in one we have link saving zelda. The bacics. In another ending we can have the world plummet into oblivion. And I was thinking about bringing links shadow back to life.his shodow teams up with gannon but then betrais him. then it’s up to you to finish him off.But with some friend’s from previous games. :?:

  22. big fat zelda fan says:

FUCKIN A!!!!! THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING IDEA EVER!!! That just leaves it open for soooo much! oh my God you have no idea how amazingly stoked I would be if this became a game! You could have all sorts of cool and heart breaking things happen like Link getting stripped of his triforce piece because of the whole rage thing. And Zelda dying and then in the end she could come back some how which would be awesome! How dare you ever say that Link should die just so he could be replaced by a new character! Fuck you man! I think it’s Ganonsuck that needs to be replaced with a new character! I mean honestly! HOW MANY TIMES AM I GOING TO HAVE TO STAB HIM IN THE HEAD!!! thats what you should do dude…in the end kill ganondorf and make a new enemy for Link to fight in the next one some how. And in the end have Link and Zelda kiss or hug or high five or something that shows they care for each other. I totally support your ideas.

  23. youd like to know wouldn't you says:

ok ur ideas are pretty good but im tell you one thing. HAVE GANONDORF KILLED IN THE FIRST SCEEN. ive fought ganon and ganondorf game after game and in sick of it. thats what made majora’s mask so good NO GANON. by the way link getting his triforce striped from him is a pretty sick idea.

  24. youd like to know wouldn't you says:

ohh and i want you to somehow include dark link, mabey have the story revole around him.

  25. Doza says:

The whole “moving in a new direction” thing’s good, but not too far. (Maybe Ganon’s death in the first five minutes would be cool though) If anyone’s gonna revolutionize the LoZ series, it would have to be a combined work of creative LoZ fans, hopefully including a lot of what all LoZ fans want. Unfortunately where would that kind of networking on that scale exist?
