How do ratings affect game sales? New research done by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research has shown that a rating of “M” by the ESRB will boost sales considerably, while “AO” is basically a killer for sales.
They also discovered that while rated “M” games only make up around 10% of total available games, they have the highest gross sales in the United States. Another interesting discovery is that they believe that metacritic scores have more to do with actual sales than realized before.
Game Daily Biz contacted the ESA concerning the study who pointed out that a majority of the top selling games are not rated “M”, so there may be some flaws in this study.
