Now that The Chronicles of Spellborn has officially launched in Europe, Eurogamer has a review of Spellborn International’s premier MMO. The article hits on all the major elements including graphics, combat, PvP and quests and hints at the future of the free-to-play MMO.
TCOS has its share of familiar fantasy MMORPG staples. However leveling and Fed Ex quests can be forgiven in favor of this original twilight world as fractured as it is beautiful. Shards hang suspended over the landscape each its own enclosed world set adrift after the Sundering shattered the original planet. The otherworldly graphics are not the only deviation from the norm. TCOS is set apart by several unique game mechanics.
Armor and other gear is truly cosmetic. TCOS focuses on the players’ skills and strategy in allocating body slots which are broader skills. Sigils give the player buffs that can be placed and replaced on armor and item slots.
Combat is fast and furious relying on speed and skill. Players must rely on targeting and strategic movement rather than button mashing. If you want to dodge, just move. If you want to hit an enemy target it. The review describes PvP as an exceptional experience; a true test of players’ skills.
Eurogamer describes a world full of haunting, fantastic visions among twilight and shadow. The reviewer doesn’t completely gush, siting places that TCOS could use some polish. For example there are a few places that the quest dialogs get rough, but the humor in them makes them worthwhile.
TCOS is readying for another launch in North America and players are expecting more great things from this free-to-play MMORPG. Speculation of things to come include factional combat. Get the full impression of The Chronicles of Spellborn from Eurogamer.
