Testing the PS3’s Backwards Compatability

Over at Curmudgeon Gamer, “jvm” decided to put the backwards compatibility of the PS3 to the test. He tried playing 90 PS2 games from his own library to see how well they worked on the 60 GB system or if they even ran at all. His findings: 84 of the games worked perfectly, for a success rate of about 93%. Of the six that had problems, four had either audio or video corruption, one froze up, and one refused to play. Not too shabby actually, especially since the majority of these games were some of the more popular titles. Unfortunately, the success rate drops to about 57% on the 80 GB model. You might want to keep that PS2 around for awhile just to make sure.

well my PS2 has started to screw up so I guess I gotta buy a PS3
so which were the games that didn’t work?
You know, I really wish “jvm” had mentioned that too. Hope it wasn’t anything good.
I am looking forward to have one of those PS3s but its too expensive if you consider how much a PS2 costs plus you gotta have a nice high definition TV to really get the juice of those babies. Anyway… Still want to have one though !!

If you follow the link, he admits that he didn’t actually try playing the 90 PS2 games, he just got the results from Sony’s online database and compiled summary numbers + charts on that data.
