Wow, people are getting kinda aggressive about FF. I play with it off (Oh noes, a newbz), mainly because I'm too lazy to change it and I play Xbox. Sure, I think it's a bad idea to remove the choice, however, it does make the spies a just a little overpowered. The guys got a point. I also like Frustrated Spy's idea too, though.

Not that I'm a spy-hater. Spies Rule

I've played a spy long enough to know:

First: If you're teammate is looking at you a bit too much, almost like they are trying to undress you with his eyes... you know he is a spy.

Second: When you are building a sentry on top of stairs, in a hallway, or anywhere else that may be tight and notice your teammate having a hard time running through your structures/yourself then you know they are a spy.

Third: Spray your weapon at your teammates... no worries it wont hurt!

First reason is a skill only the users can inherit and not the game. There should be smarts needed for the game too... not spray and ruin the spy's day.

Second reason is a flaw to the game. You can run through your own teammates like if they were ghosts but when you run into an enemy... you run into them.

Third way is a ridiculous way of detecting a spy... This is why Friendly Fire is important. You can have different variations of FF and still enjoy playing without being frustrated by your own teammates but would require someone that can create such an algorithm.

FF On with variations and other options:

Teammate damage lessened.
Quantity of Points lost.
Prisons.
Self damage instead of inflicted or at a ratio.
Timer delay from Friendly Fire death decreased but added to source.
Stunning the person in place who killed you.
ETC.

Halo 3 did remove the penalty for committing suicide.

This is actually really good, because so often you would

end up in a game where someone was "de-leveling" or just

generally being an #%*& and kept committing suicide to

ruin the game for everyone.

On a side note, I will petition http://www.GetGosu.com

to add TF2 to it's list of games.

@Steve: Halo has FF on by default, I don't even know if you can it off, I've killed many a team mate with a stray grenade or a mis-timed sniper shot.

No FF on?

Are they mad?

FF on servers take skill anad are far more enjoyable to play on, not to mention the competative game!

This is a really bad choice for what was a great game.

There's a pattern here. The people who understand how FF works, and even moreso, how it worked in previous TF games, want FF to stay. Those who want TF2 to sink itself down to the standards or UT, Halo, or some watered-down console standard want it to be off.

There are alot of things TF2 is sorely missing, such as EMP grenades and the demo detpack. I haven't played TF2 yet, so I don't know what each class have in the low-damage weapon dept. nor how long it takes to toggle between each. The classic TF player knows that you pull out your shotgun and nick someone walking by to determine if they are a spy. It's not the end of the world to lose a little health and not everyone on your team is going to be doing it to you during your already short life expetancy (people have their own agenda's on pubs as it is).

I see an organized TF2 game using voice chat with spy warnings way ahead of time. If you want to combat the spy, use that instead of shooting everyone you see. I see no need to disable FF which effectively makes the disguise useless.

Wow. So much for looking forward to TF2 being a respectable competitive game.
My respect for this team of devs, and especially Mr Robin Walker, went right down the toilet.

I'm tired of devs dumbing down games because people are too retarded to learn how to pay attention to what's going on, rather than spam grenades everywhere or shoot everyone you see. Where's the skill in that?

Newb devs = dumbed down game. Starting to remind me of planetside.

RIP Competitive TF2

Why not make it an option ?

Valve is generally pretty open about cvars.

I find it strange that they didn't leave this option in.

Personally I like friendly fire, especially since I am

all about pro-CounterStrike...even so, if you wanted to

turn off FF in CS you have that option.

For those of you who think that the removal of friendly fire is a good improvement, there are a few things I would like to say:

First, You could of just not played on friendly fire servers. The server I played on exclusively had FF on, and advertised it in the server name. People came in knowing what to expect, and we all enjoyed playing on a FF server. Now we can no longer have this option.

Second, I believe friendly fire adds a lot to the game, and if you don't agree with me, I have absolutely no problem with you playing on No FF servers. Friendly fire made it so you cant simply spam high explosive AoE weapons, or jump into a crowd of people guns blazing. It made firefights take a bit more skill.

For instance, as the heavy you had to learn to hold down the right mouse button, and simply tap the left when there weren't any allies in front of you. You had to choose your shots carefully when you were the demo man / soldier. You had to not step in front of allies when they were shooting. You had to THINK before you acted. Not to mention it made medics a much more valuable class :P.

Now, there are a couple downsides to it:

Intentional Team Killing. Yeah, it's a pain in the ???, but on the server I played (joe.to #1, I am Mesarune) there were enough admin's afoot to ban / kick those who were abusing the setting, and it never caused problems for more than a few minutes.

Spies. I've heard that many people have a large problem finding spies when FF is on, since they can't just shoot everybody that appears nearby. I think that that is a horrible way to detect spies, and an unneeded one at that. On an FF server it gives the Pyros a purpose. Which brings me to the reasons FF Off isn't needed to find spies:

Fire didn't hurt allies, so it could EASILY be used to detect spies.

Spies also don't bleed when they are shot, so you can tell a spy by shooting them once in the foot with a low damage weapon, and watching for blood. This adds a bit more skill to the game.

Spies don't shoot. When you see somebody running around not shooting, they are probably a spy.

Spies always carry the same weapon. You'll never see an engineer spy carrying a wrench or pistol.

Friendly spies have little masks when disguised (as they are 99% of the time) -- When an enemy is disguised as a spy, they aren't wearing a mask.

I hope this helps clear up some of the misconceptions about friendly fire needing to be banned. And I REALLY hope valve brings it back as an option. I think it is a much needed part of the game, but I can understand why some people want it off. All I ask is to make it an option.

This is very bad for competition. Not only does this take away skill from clans who actually spy check, it makes it more spammy/less skilled when you dont have to watch out where you aim. You can just spam rockets or grenades with no regard knowing your team won't get harmed.
