Team Fortress 2 Gameplay Footage

After those two hilarious & swank TF2 “interview” videos, I have been wondering when we were going to get to see some real TF2 gameplay footage. As luck would have it, Gamersyde have nabbed some TF2 gameplay at the recent GC. For a parked cam, the video quality is quite good. However, the audio is much left to be desired (but understandable).

The clip above shows gameplay of the heavy weapons guy and sniper classes. After watching the clip, the impression I’m getting is that both classes appear to have captured the original TF feel. I even got a chuckle watching the bunny hopping soldiers (a peeve of mine). Oh how that brings back memories. You have to admit, the look and style of TF2 kind of makes the bunny hopping silliness fit.

If you need a little more footage, Gamersyde also has a second TF2 video (link below). The second clip shows where being an aggressive scout gets you and also how not to play the spy. This wack-tastic game is such a guilty pleasure…

Many thanks to our Master at Arms, Daniel P., for the heads up.

That’s a fanboy euphemism for “this game is a retread of the previous version.”

Watching that gameplay video confirmed my suspicions that TF2 is basically nothing but TFC on the Source engine in cartoonish clothing. The only thing that surprised me about the game was how poor the death animations are. The characters just uniformly lie down when they die (not by explosion) like they are passing out. I expected something cartoonishly bombastic given the art style or at least ragdolls circa 2003 or 2004. Valve should at least make the characters yawn while they do it because that is what I am doing while I watch that clip.

The death animation is a little odd… but, with a few months of development left, I’m still waiting to make a decision. I like the art style, it’s different, it’s not anime or realistic, which is refreshing.

I love how people actually think TFC is what TF2 is based on. The game play itself is identical to the original TF (built and played on the quakeworld engine kiddos, you know pre halflife?). The animations fit with how most of us old timers played the game, it’s not a serious simulation by any means. I mean come on, who picks a spanner or baseball bat as a weapon against a 50 cal????

With that said, the only draw backs from the true original is the environment is locked down alot more. No more greande jumps from the engineers to balance a sentry on a 1 sqare inch outcropping.

All in all it fixed everything qwtf was missing. Graphics engine update and the ability to run in 2560X1600 resolution. :)
