Goodbye Surfer Girl, We Hardly Knew Ye

Posted by Stephany on Friday, May 9th, 2008 at 11:32 am under Gamer Life, Games Industry, Games

surfer girl

Looks like one of the gaming world’s favorite places to get the inside scoop on gossip, rumors and other nonsensical gaming related fallacies is retiring. I am talking about Surfer Girl of course, and even though in her last post, she stated that she did not not want coverage on her departure, I just could not help myself.

Here are her final words pulled directly from her site:

  • Please don’t devote coverage to this–focus on any of the plethora of more important things such as QoL issues.
  • Industryites, bad QoL situations will not get better by telling no one about them.
  • What was the point of this blog? Force folks to pay attention to important things going on in the real world and encourage them to become activists for social and political progress. I probably failed miserably, but at least I tried.
  • You cannot honestly be surprised that Doom 4 was announced, can you? I’m guessing you are the kind that will be shocked when things like Call of Duty 6, Diablo III, Hitman 5, Onimusha 5, Max Payne 3, the non-wagglefest starring those Rabbids, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 3, Sniper Studios’ Capcom title, Dynasty Warriors 8, NBA Street 5 and Turok 2 are announced.
  • Yeah, Boom Blox is one of the best games to hit a Nintendo platform in years and some folks at NoE/NoA lotcheck think so too.

Whether you liked her or not, it is always sad to see another gamer becoming disenchanted with the industry. What ever her reasons for leaving it, we wish her all the best.

Thanks for the heads up: Videogaming247

What Happened to the BioShock Movie?

Posted by Jonathan on Sunday, February 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm under Videos, Gamer Life, Games Industry, 2K Games, Games, Game Companies

Seeing as it was one of the more critically and commercially successful games of 2007, it seems a sure bet that Hollywood would come knocking for the movie rights to BioShock. So why haven’t we heard anything definite about a movie based on this gem? Well, it’s not for Hollywood’s lack of trying. Rumor has it that a number of production companies have expressed interest in a deal with Take Two, but the publisher has so far rebuffed all advances. No idea why at this point, though some are speculating that it may be due to monetary disagreements or that they may be hoping to secure a much larger alliance with a studio. Or maybe they’re smart enough to realize that no matter how intelligent the story, Hollywood will certainly find a way to dilute it into box office dreck.

Rumor: BioWare "Could" Make Mass Effect For PS3

Posted by William on Saturday, January 5th, 2008 at 1:20 pm under Bioware, Sony, Electronic Arts, Sony

mass_effect.jpg

Rumors that BioWare will make Mass Effect for the PS3 have been circulating around for some time now. Keep in mind that the title above includes the word “could”. Recently, a Wedbush Morgan analyst by the name of Michael Pachter predicted that BioWare would make Mass Effect for the PS3. Pachter’s statements in the past have been strongly opposed by members of the video game industry, so there’s really no telling where he gets his information from.

There hasn’t been one single shred of credible evidence that they are working on a PS3 release and BioWare’s community coordinator recently posted some comments in the official BioWare forums that shed very little light on the subject:

“Sorry folks, this is just another rumor at this stage. *Could* BioWare make Mass Effect for the PS3 (or the PC, or some other platform) in the future? Yes we could, but we are not working on a PS3 version currently.”

Considering BioWare is owned by EA and EA has a great relationship with Sony, I think it’s probable that Mass Effect will makes it’s way to the PS3 in 2008 or 2009. A game as great as Mass Effect really needs to see some action on different consoles. For now, we can just sit back and see what happens. For now, there’s simply nothing to this rumor.

RUMOR MILL: LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 Landing Fall 2008

Posted by Stephany on Saturday, December 15th, 2007 at 3:59 pm under Games Industry, Gamer Life, Sony, Sony, Games, Game Companies

littlebigplanet killzone 2

According to the Sony blog Three Speech, LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 will be hitting the PS3 sometime between September and October 2008. Details are sketchy as to which one will be hitting which month, but isn’t that always the case with esoteric announcements such as these?

Granted, we expected Killzone 2 to be hitting later in 2008 than expected, but LittleBigPlanet was slated for an earlier release.Whatever the case may be, since this is not an “official” Sony blog, this statement will just have to float around in Rumor Land a bit more until more information is forthcoming, so keep your shirts on.

Also of note, the blog also stated that Grand Theft Auto IV, Home, and Metal Gear Solid 4 will be hitting sometime in 2008. Wow. Great forcasting there guys. Maybe you should get a job with the Psychic Friends Network or try out for Lifetime’s America’s Psychic Challenge.

Check back often for more “official” updates.

The Truth Behind The Most Recent Wii Lightsaber Rumors (Lies)

Posted by William on Sunday, July 8th, 2007 at 9:47 pm under LucasArts, Nintendo

lightsaber.jpg

I’m sure most of you have heard the disapointing news that the Nintendo Wii game LucasArts has been talking about is actually just the Lego Star Wars game. Fear not, because this rumor is absolute garbage. I’m not sure where the rumor started or even how it got widespread on some really credible sites, but it’s a completely false rumor. This is extremely fortunate for Star Wars freaks like myself out there who were holding onto hope for a awesome lightsaber game for the Wii.

Sometimes when covering gaming news, writers don’t fully look into a story. Fortunately, at Gaming Today we are on top of things. The announcement that a new Lego Star Wars game was hitting the Wii sent blogs and some big sites into a frenzy earlier claiming that this is the lightsaber game we were all waiting for, which really would have been terrible news for all of us.

Fortunately, we realized that this couldn’t be the case, because the lightsaber game we have been talking about for a long time is being developed directly by LucasArts. The Star Wars Legos game for Wii is being developed by a completely different publisher. Attention to detail can really save us from many false gaming rumors. I’ll admit reporting on games is a tricky business, because sometimes we have to go with a rumor, but we do make an attempt to at least verify the story.

Don’t always believe the hype and keep the dream alive, because there will be an awesome lightsaber game on the Nintendo Wii in the future.

New Final Fantasy Dissidia to be a Brawler

Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, May 9th, 2007 at 5:04 pm under Square Enix, Final Fantasy, Gamer Life, Games, Game Platforms

Dissidia

In other Square-Enix news, the new FF game for PSP DISSIDIA will also be announced this weekend at the SE party in Japan. Rumors are circulating that this game will be more brawler based, which will be a departure from the previous installments. The cast of characters should be familiar to FF players, and this 3D epic battle game should prove to be interesting to say the least. SE has it’s teaser site up and running, and hopefully more details will be forthcoming Monday.
