WyrdWeb Dragon, Shadow Director and Co-Producer of Project Britannia, has a Dev Diary up on the mod project for Ultima VI: The False Prophet. After detailing current personal projects, WyrdWeb introduces other members of Team Archon’s small but dedicated staff.
Team Archon is using Siege Tools in most of its work. There are a couple screen shots including GUI and in game environments that show off their progress and skills with the program. I was very impressed with the look of the one above, given that this project is using Ultima 6. After all, the game was released by Origin Systems in 1990 after all.

NCsoft has announced that patch 1.6.5 for Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa is almost ready to make its debut on public servers. There are still a few bug fixes to clean up before patch 1.6.5 goes live. For a preview of changes included in patch 1.6.5 check out the Test Server Patch Notes.

There’s a new video that complements the Tabula Rasa Q&A with Paul Sage we featured yesterday. MMORPG has exclusive footage from NCsoft of the hybrids resulting from splicing your character’s DNA with alien stock. Although Tabula Rasa got off to a shaky start, it’s new content like this that will decide whether the MMO regroups or if the AFS will go down fighting.
Richard Garriott talked about the successes and failures of the marketing strategies used for his Tabula Rasa MMORPG at the 2007 Independent Game Conference.
“Marketing is a black art. We regularly go back and forth between it being all important, and irrelevant. At some basic level, I do believe that all great games will sell eventually, through word of mouth.”
He continued, “Marketing can definitely get you on the shelf, and in the first few weeks, get you off the shelf. In the long run, even with the best marketing, if it’s a bad game, word gets out, and your sales will come to halt.”
Specifically, “I think the formal marketing did fine,” he replied. “They let people know the game existed, and was coming out. I actually think the biggest mistake was made not by the marketing department, but by the development team. We invited too many people into the beta when the game was still too broken.”
“We burned out some quantity of our beta-testers when the game wasn’t yet fun,” he said, adding, “As we’ve begun to sell the game, the people who hadn’t participated in the beta became our fast early-adopters.”
He continued, “And the people who did participate in the beta, we’ve had to go back to and say ‘look, look, we promise: we know it wasn’t fun two months ago, but we fixed all that. Really, come try it again.’ We’ve had to go out and develop free programs to invite those people back for free before they go buy it. So the beta process, which we used to think of as a QA process, is really a marketing process.”
He said the Guild Wars team did the best job, with their friends-and-family beta test remaining very small throughout development. “Only about two or three weeks before launch did they do the ‘open it up for pretty much anybody to play,’ when the game was basically done,” concluded Garriott.
Unfortunately in my opinion Tabula Rasa is just not a great game. It’s got a few features that are truly innovative like the cloning system. Still, even on high settings I just can’t get the game to look like it does in the screenshots. The combat feels repetitive, and it just doesn’t break enough new ground.

Space Adventures, Ltd., the world’s leading space experiences company, has announced that for the first time the public will have the opportunity to train as a private space explorer alongside one of its orbital spaceflight candidates, and among professional astronauts.
“Participation as an official back-up crew member is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an individual, or a company sponsoring an individual, to experience first-hand how our clients train for spaceflight,” said Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures. “It is with great enthusiasm that we, along with Richard, offer this position to a member of the public. The individual selected will be someone who not only has a genuine interest in human spaceflight, but also one who is able to be an active participant in Richard’s mission, to include being featured in a documentary TV series.”
Richard Garriott, innovative videogame developer and son of a former NASA astronaut, will join Dennis Tito, Mark Shuttleworth, Greg Olsen, Anousheh Ansari and Charles Simonyi as one of the first private space explorers. He will begin spaceflight preparations after the first of the year for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in October 2008.
“I want to involve as many people as possible in my mission and this is one of the most innovative ways to do so,” said Richard Garriott. “I encourage anyone who has ever dreamed of traveling to space to contact to Space Adventures. Not only will the back-up crew member be certified as a ‘fully-trained cosmonaut’ and be named to an official space mission crew, a distinction that less than 1,000 people have ever had; but, our combined participation is a step forward in the progression of our expansion into the cosmos.”
“The back-up crew member’s financial investment into this program can be credited in-full toward a future orbital or lunar spaceflight mission,” added Mr. Anderson. The price of the program is $3,000,000 (USD) which includes the required spaceflight training costs, along with accommodations in Star City and other training locations. “If I had not trained as a back-up crew member in 2006, then I would never have flown to space that year,” said Anousheh Ansari, Space Adventures’ fourth orbital client and first female spaceflight participant to launch to the ISS. “The training was exhilarating and ultimately prepared me for my flight which I’m thankful for.”
Garriott’s spaceflight is the first of a series of missions that will accommodate commercial activity aboard the ISS. Involvement from the private sector will include scientific and environmental research as well as educational outreach programming. Garriott who has become known for his impromptu appearances in the game as General British wants to celebrate the success of Tabula Rasa’s launch with this event.

Richard Garriott is truly a veteran of the video game industry. As his Ultima series changed what gamers expected of video games for the PC, his brainchild Ultima Online opened the gates to industry powerhouse that is Massively Multiplayer Online gaming today.
The New York Times has a feature on this brilliant if somewhat eccentric man who’s name is being introduced to a whole new generation of gamers. This time, Garriott is exploring the realm of sci-fi in his new innovative MMORPG Tabula Rasa.
“I’ve been doing medieval fantasy for 25 years in a row, and it was just time to do something new,” Mr. Garriott, in his customary uniform of denim shirt, jeans, white tube socks and sneakers, said here at the offices of NCsoft, the South Korean company publishing the game. “The first element we wanted to focus on was fast-paced tactical combat. No. 2 was creating a dynamic battlefield where the player feels there is action going on around them all the time. And third was creating a story line that includes ethical parables and problems.”
With Tabula Rasa, Garriott aims to put story and role playing back into MMORPGs. He’s not pulling punches in his criticism of the directions many of the most popular competition have taken, including World of Warcraft.
“As many kudos as I would like to give World of Warcraft, it’s basically a remake of EverQuest, just incredibly polished and refined,” he said. “There are harbingers of failure in that model. Everyone in these games is obsessed with the concept of how much damage-per-second they are inflicting and maximizing their D.P.S. When you do that, you are no longer playing a role; you are playing an inventory-management game.”
He added, “With Tabula Rasa we wanted the player to spend as much time as possible actually looking at the environment and what they’re shooting at.”

Richard Garriott, famed game designer and son of former astronaut Owen Garriott, is set to follow in his father’s boot steps and head out to the final frontier as the next space tourist. The co-founder of the North American branch of NCsoft, the world’s largest online game developer, plans to post details of his training and flight on his website to share his experiences and “involve as many people as possible in my mission.”
“We need to be adventurous in mind and stimulate our intellects to answer today’s most daunting scientific questions and to invent tomorrow’s technological marvels,” said Garriott, creator of the popular Ultima Online computer game.
Garriott is training for an October 2008 launch, when he will be the guest of the Space Adventures company.
“It has always been Space Adventures’ goal to open the space frontier. Now we have designed a series of missions devoted to increase commercial involvement in manned space stations,” the company’s president Eric Anderson was quoted as saying.
The trip won’t just be a pleasure cruise. The spaceflight’s commercial partner, ExtremoZyme Inc., a biotechnology company founded by Garriott’s father Owen, will be conducting experiments in space on proteins associated with human diseases.
Owen Garriott isn’t surprised in the least by his son’s desire to reach for the stars.
“Because of my career, it was almost natural for Richard to be interested in space and exploration. I am so pleased that he is able to embrace this himself and that he is dedicating his flight to research, I am very proud of him,” Owen Garriott was quoted as saying.
Garriott will be the sixth space tourist joining Dennis Tito, Mark Shuttleworth, Greg Olsen, Anousheh Ansari and Charles Simonyi.

Today at E3, I got a chance to sit down with Richard Garriott to learn a little bit more about Tabula Rasa. The upcoming near future sci-fi MMORPG first-person shooter from NCSoft has been in development for quite some time, and has consumed something in the neighborhood of $40 million in development money. Luckily, I was also able to jump into Tabula Rasa and get some hands on time with the game.
Tabula Rasa is set on a number of planets, the first named Foreas. In this universe, Earth has been overrun by an alien race known as the Bane. Luckily, the Bane left some human survivors (collectively referred to by Mr. Garriott as ’subscribers’). These survivors will take up arms to fight off the invaders, and will be aided by another alien race known as the Eloh. Apparently the Eloh are the estranged cousins of the Bane, and the Bane are bent on their annihilation as well. The Eloh, while nebulous and rarely if ever seen, are the source of certain powers that the human survivors learn, described by Mr. Garriott as resembling ‘Force’ powers, much like you would see in Star Wars.

MMORPG has new exclusive screenshots of Richard Garriott’s latest work Tabula Rasa. These latest morsels of eye candy show off the intricate details put into the creation of characters, items and surroundings for the game. The texturing is just fantastic. This much anticipated game is in Beta and gearing for it debut.
Yesterday I featured an interview with Richard Garriott on Tabula Rasa. If you want to get a closer look at the new Tabula Rasa MMO, head over to the Tabula Rasa website and sign up for your chance to participate in the beta test. Destination Games and NCsoft will be selecting testers based on system specifications, game experience, location, and date submitted. The slots for this closed beta test are limited and there is a waiting list. Testers must be over 18 and sign a non-disclosure legal agreement.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Tabula Rasa is a MMO action game that transports the player into a war of epic proportions between xenophobic alien invaders poised to conquer the galaxy and a band of rebel soldiers intent on stopping them at all costs.
Combining fast-paced action with the immersion of a role-playing game, Tabula Rasa takes the player on an intergalactic adventure where the individual has an opportunity to significantly impact the pace of battle on a global scale. Players enter the game as rebel soldiers wielding a variety of futuristic weapons, potent demolitions and the mystical power of “Logos.†It is up to each individual to use their stealth, ingenuity and skill to assist a ragtag coalition of rebels in their efforts to stop an enemy known for its intelligence and unyielding determination to enslave the Universe.
The Escapist’s Dana Massey has an interview with Richard Garriott, better known to some as Lord British. The unconventional genius behind the Ultima series and founder of Origin. Garriott speaks on his past works and his new project Tabula Rasa, an MMO.
Listing Time Bandits, Star Wars and Tolkien as influences in his work, Garriott worked on the Ultima series over twenty years climaxing with Ultima IX. He managed to evolve Britania as a living breathing world rich in history of its own. Now he seeks to develop that kind of life for Tabula Rasa in one fell swoop.
Garriott is focusing on effective story telling in one of the most challenging arenas, MMOs. His story focuses on “The Hero’s Journey”.
Even though ostensibly the story is about accomplishing the great goal of solving the world’s problems, the real and important story is about the main character, where that main character actually has to grow and rise above their own personal demons, personal challenges or personal failings to become the person that is worthy and capable of solving the Great Problem. And so the Great Problem is really secondary in a way. That is what I think most games missed out on.
The goal with Tabula Rasa is to tell a story that inspires the player to become emotionally invested in their character. They should also come to know their opponet and find him worthy of opposing.
When asked what compelled him to work with MMOs, Garriott replies, “For me, the compelling reason to be in MMOGs vs. solo-player games comes from what I believe is a fundamental human need to share experiences.”
Garriott concludes that although he is invested in working with MMOs currently, he can easily see himself returning to single player RPGs or the next new trend or genre.
Hot on the heels of the announcement of Tabula Rosa’s closed beta, Richard Garriott, executive producer of Tabula Rosa, said in a recent interview that World of Warcraft will help, not hurt, their player numbers.
“We commonly get the question, is World of Warcraft a big competitor that might hurt our sales? It really turns out to be quite the opposite. In the case of the MMO genre, when people sign on to play one of these games - while it’s true that they generally only play one, maybe two at the most, no one plays any particular MMO for more than a year or so,” said Garriott. At least to some extent, I would agree with him. However, I have seen that many WoW fans will try something new, then return to Azeroth/Outland. Tabula Rosa will need to be polished on day one to woo those players away. If I recall correctly, didn’t Brad McQuaid say the same thing in reference to Vanguard? Wait, SOE isn’t running Tabula Rosa, are they? Oh, then it doesn’t apply. Nevermind.
Richard Garriott, executive producer for Tabula Rosa, and veteran of the gaming industry all the way back to Ultima Online, recently accompanied renowned physicist Stephen Hawking on his zero-gravity flight on the “Vomit Comet.” Mr. Garriott wrote about the experience in his blog. The blog give a detailed description of the run-up to the flight, and of the flight itself.
After the flight, Professor Hawking said. “It was amazing. The zero-g part was wonderful, I could have gone on and on – space here I come! I recommend the experience to everyone and I hope that many will follow me and experience weightlessness.”
