Usually when one thinks of witches, three different images come to mind: the stereotypical wart-nosed cackling hags with green skin and a pointy black hat; the Hollywood version featuring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock; or your current pseudo-pagans that think they are witches when in reality they are nothing more than some poor soul trying desperately to fit in somewhere that they dance naked around bonfires in suburban backyards with their overweight counterparts – saggy flesh flapping in the wind while the light from the fire glistens off of their horrible acne. Ok, maybe I went too far with my imagery there, but you get what I am saying – normally when one imagines what a witch would look like, a sexy, scantily-clad warrior-woman never seems to come to mind – unless you play D&D or have an overactive imagination.
This is what publisher Schanz International Consultants and developer Revistronic apparently had in mind when creating their latest project Witches, a third-person action game for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. After checking out the awesome screens for the game, hopefully we will never look at witches the same again – just think of all the lives that would have been saved back in medieval times if all witches looked like these ladies. The only thing being burned at the stake would have been a pig and maybe a few ears of corn and some baked potatoes.
In Witches, players will find themselves in dark medieval surroundings where they will be involved in an epic struggle for survival against the repellent and deformed Hordes of the Beast, an evil creature that has established a reign of slavery and terror throughout the land. Across this landscape of devastation, you have to direct Gwen, a sultry warrior that still resists the beast’s dark will and leads the rebellion against his satanic power.
Teamwork will be an integral part of playing Witches because all modeling, levels and scenes are designed to promote cooperative play, whether it be through the game’s AI or via human players across the Internet. Revistronic even developed a special technology to create this game, and if you look at the screens you will see what a wonderful job they did indeed. We will have to see what the gameplay will consist of, but there is no denying that looks like a very cool game.
Here is a list of features for Witches which I pulled from the official website:
- Scenery: Everything reeks of death, torture and destruction. The people have been enslaved. They are prisoners of a dark power that has established a reign of terror and devastation throughout the land. Your aim is to eliminate the evil creature that dwells in the depths of a sinister castle and to rescue the crushed inhabitants from their horrifying destiny. In order to survive in the face of this satanic power and its cruel armies, you must learn the art of combat and acquire terrible dark powers yourself.
- Sultry girls against satanic monsters: Let yourself go in this dark medieval narrative and enjoy the contrast between sensual beauty and sinister horrors. Direct the beautiful but dangerous Gwen in a spectacular fight against hordes of repellent deformed creatures.
- Feel the fear: Skies rent by terrifying storms, hair-raising shrieks, shadows in the fog, stealthy movements and menacing growls, the glint of monstrous eyes that watch from the shades. The oppressive certainty of death lying in wait for you.
- Spectacular system of tactical combat: Combining spectacular combat with sequences of caution and stealth. The tactics you use will be decisive for your survival. You must rescue the captives and obtain their help. You will lead your team. You can be a great leader or sacrifice your comrades in the fight. Your decisions will shape your destiny.
- Totally interactive environment: All game items can be used, creating a sensation of total immersion such as never before. You can use all kinds of objects to achieve your aims, even the amputated limbs of adversaries.
Sounds like fun and if it continues to impress me, this will be a must have for my PC, IF I can tear myself away from LotRO for more than three minutes. Well, I’m pretty sure they didn’t really care so much about their appearance in the Middle Ages for the urges that beautiful women awoke in men were condemned and a thing to be ashamed of back in those times of sweet ignorance.
