Stringer: “The Turning Point Has Been Passed”

The 40 GB PlayStation 3 is a success, or at least that’s how Sony and CEO Howard Stringer are viewing it. In the week ending November 11, the PS3 sold more than 100,000 units, which is a terrific number when put in comparison with the totals we’ve seen the PS3 output in prior months. There still remains work to be done, but Stringer believes this is a good sign for the company.
“It’s the breakthrough we’ve been anticipating,” Stringer told the AP. “We’ve been holding our breath.”
Previous weekly totals typically fell in the 30,000 – 40,000 range, so suddenly moving 100,000 in a week is a great accomplishment.
“Obviously, we’ve taken so much heat over the year on PS3,” Stringer said from his office in Tokyo. “Finally, the turning point has been passed.”
Stringer didn’t say the success was due entirely to the introduction of the new SKU, but the luck granted upon Sony by Nintendo and its inability to keep up with demand for the Wii. “It’s a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware.”
While we’ll need to see for how long these sales can keep up, we need to remember the implications this has in the next-gen DVD wars, as each PS3 sold is another Blu-ray player in homes.

That’s a silly argument though, because it’s the lead-up to christmas which is the universal sales increase for pretty much all products in existance, especially those that are good as ‘gifts’. I’m not denying the 40gb hasn’t helped, I’m saying it’s an unfair justification.
“I’m saying it’s an unfair justification.”
Whats an unfair justification?
He says sales have gone up because of the cheaper 40gb model and hes right. He also says that Wii shortages will also probably help PS3 sales which is also possible.
What exactly is ’silly’ or ‘unfair’ about that?
As I said (the part you didn’t uplift
) the fact that it’s a lead up to christmas means that all sales of pretty much everything increase. I’m not saying the 40gb model didn’t help, but if it was released say 6 months ago, I think we’d have seen just how much impact it would’ve had.
For example, it’d be like having Halo 3 released before christmas (nowish) and saying “the fact it’s a new version means it’ll sell more than the previous ones”. How can we for sure have known that it was definitely down to the fact it was a better game and not just because it was released at a time where gamers and parents of gamers are looking to increase their gaming magazine?
The fact that the 40gb model happens to be what gamers wanted is a fair assumption to make, but he makes no attention to say “but other circumstances may have played an event” other than stating Wii sales were down due to lack of hardware.
Again, not knocking the fact the PS3 is selling, but for someone who speaks to the public, he’s not very appreciative seemingly of other influences. If of course he does mention this in previous or future statements, then I happily stand corrected.
