gman Steam to Distribute More Than Just Games

It’s only natural for a distribution platform to look at more than one type of content, especially when it has as many users as Steam does. With the 15 million user mark passed, what’s next for Valve’s platform?

Speaking with Tom’s Games, Valve’s marketing VP, Doug Lombardi, revealed that video and music is the sort of content we might see on Steam – and sooner than you think.

“We’re looking at more casual games and international games [for Steam],” he explained. “And we’re also looking at other types of content like video and music. We’re definitely having those conversations and meetings, and we’re reaching out to folks with other types of digital entertainment. I think before the end of the year, you’ll probably see some pilot programs with other digital entertainment on Steam.”

I really like Steam, so I’m excited to see what Valve can do with it. I was hoping that Games for Windows Live was going to become the standard platform where you could have a friends list and play games (in a more integrated fashion than Xfire), but Steam has really taken that vision of mine and run with it. It’s far from perfect, but Valve clearly has high aspirations for it. It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here.

    1. if they’re going to have media distribution, they need to be able to push this media to handheld devices (mp3 players, phones via bluetooth, etc).

    2. they need to be absolutely certain to make the client much more lightweight for running programs. countless times does my game freeze and I find steam.exe using 99% of my resources.

    3. they need a simple interface and the ability to create custom playlists, edit id3 tags, and have a list of recently played songs through the steam community, also recently watched videos.

if they do these three things, they will have potentially the best platform there is.

Anyone remember when EVERYONE called Steam “STEAMing Pile of S@!^”? Hell it even got the “Coaster of the Year Award” when it came out. My how the tables have turned………
