spore2 1 Spore Expansions Planned; Possible Flora Editor

Already, Spore is looking to be one of the most massive games ever, what with the insane amount of customization options, gameplay styles, and online features at your disposal. So is Maxis just goign to sit back on their laurel once the game finally ships next month? Of course not; after all, this is the same company that made The Sims. In an recent interview, executive producer, Lucy Bradshaw, confirmed that expansions will be coming for the game, and it won’t just be packs of new creature parts, either:

“When we started Spore, we were thinking about how we’d make an engine that had the possibility of expansion, so yes, we’ll add to the experience. I think, however, we have a very cool opportunity to take Spore in a few different directions too. The editors are so cool and fun, that we want to advance those as well as the gameplay that we put into the core game.”

She then added that a “flora editor” may among these additions, allowing players to create their own plant species as well; presumably for your creatures to munch on. I’m sure the internet community will keep things completely tasteful when it does come out and certainly not make a field of phallic trees or somesuch.

    Oh awesome!

  2. Vengeance09 says:

Hooray! A new way for me to ship all my money to Will Wright!

  3. Utima D says:

“presumably for your creatures to munch on. ”
Or to munch on your creatures.

  4. Mutilate says:

Of course, they will charge for every little extra thing they add. Why can’t Maxis, while working under EA, be a mature and reasonable company? Be like valve, work for the customer, not for the money.

  5. mm3guy says:

“So is Maxis just goign to sit ”

    You spelled going wrong

  6. TH3 ALT3RNAT1V3 says:

Of course Maxis are going to make us pay for any expansions, they’re doing their jobs to get payed, so if they don’t charge for them they’re not gonna get any money. Look on the bright side, your getting more fun out of what seems is going to be an awesome game anyway, so why not pay a little bit of extra cash for it?

  7. Mutilate says:

because knowing what Maxis has done in the past, it wont be a little bit of extra cash. They will probably charge 15-20 dollars for a flora editor. Like I said before, Valve does the same thing as this but doesn’t charge, because they work for the customer to get them happy and they’ve said that business goes up because of that.

  8. Serio says:

They don’t force you to buy it. Valve charges alot for their expansions too. 30-50 bucks for Half Life Episode 1 & 2 seems abit much.

  9. Sporatic says:

i totaly agree with Ultima D. “presumably for your creatures to munch on” ?!? Konwing Maxis, im prett sure we are going too get a giant froofleflopian creature trap, along with the harmless little grasses, we will probably get…poisonous mushrooms, man/creature eating plants, etc etc etc. probably due too maxis being the best.

I also agree with Vengeance09. Don’t we ALL love too ship all of our money too Will Wright?!?

  10. Mutilate says:

More like 50 bucks for half life 2 episode 1, 2, half life 2, team fortress 2, and portal. How is that bad?

  11. UncleBoogie says:

The Orange Box was easily the bargain of the century when it came to PC gaming. So folk whining that Valve don’t play nice are brimming over with wrongability.

I am excited for Spore, but I’m sick of this expansion BS. For all games. Now it’s pretty much a given you’re going to get half a product when you buy a game so they can take your money again. I mean I’m excited for Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 but know Blizz will ship probably 60-75% of the actual content and hold the rest back for the expansion.

Anyone remember who the first thieving bastards to do this were? I’m trying to think back to the first expansion pack I remember.

With Spore, this is going to lead to what you can already see in the Creature Creator. If you download a creature PNG file created in the full version, you can’t even look at it in the free version. You just get an error message.

I can see that error message becoming very common as time goes on. Thieving shites.

  12. PaliKari says:

Of course they are only going to ship it with 75% of their ideas done, or else it would never ship. Think of how long we’ve been waiting for this game. Now think of how long we would still have to wait if we wanted it to ship with “everything”. They have to release it at some point. As long as everything thats included works I’m happy. And the only people who don’t charge for small expansions are the ones that charge a monthly fee. And even they charge for the big ones. If they don’t “work for the money” there wouldn’t be any money, and then there wouldn’t be any game. I like games that release frequent content. It keeps me from getting bored with the game too fast.

I can’t wait to make different bushes that I can trim into various styles, like runways and upside down triangles!

How long do you think until there would be a fruit known as dingleberry?

  14. DAwings says:

    @ Mutilate

Ummm valve is not working for the customer… they recycle the same AVERAGE engine (yes thats right the same AVERAGE engine, revamping doesn’t do crap unless you are epic and can turn a pixelated black man into the legend that is UT3’s malcom) I mean seriously, Valve are the worst when it comes to making games for a customer, they don’t start from the ground up ever and this is why I am going to be happy to fork out that $30-40 for an expansion when although it doesn’t add anything ground breaking it does extend the life of the game considerably when comparing it to a company who’s expansions (or episodes as they like to call them) don’t really bring anything new to the table… once you have seen a head crab in a giant fortress, on a beach and in an abandoned town, you have seen it ALL… I mean really you can download the episode engines with sdk from Steam so really all you are paying for is a 2 hour long mod. Where as this expansion adds to the actual game play… I mean sure there are alot of plants already made in the creature creator, but they do not actually fill the space in game (mainly because I don’t feel like pushing a race of pansies to create fire). So please go troll some where else mutilate, I am sure some 12 year old halo or cs players would love to hear your rants…

  15. John says:

@Serio that is true but they keep updating there stuuff for the poeple for free TF2 being a good one at that since they keep adding all new stuff for free and that makes people buy there games and what not

  16. Serio says:

Yeah. But about The Orange Box being the bargain of the century; I don’t think so. It was $150 here in Denmark.

  17. Lamaar says:

DAwings, that was the biggest troll I have ever seen, so don’t complain about others.
