Splinter Cell Producer Says Conviction Not Coming to PS3

Splinter Cell: Conviction Screen

Have you been wondering why no one has mentioned Splinter Cell: Conviction for the PS3? Well, I had assumed that Microsoft had shelled out a load of cash to keep it on the Xbox 360. While that may be, producer and technical director Dany Lepage has enunciated another reason that we won’t be seeing Sam Fisher on the PS3.

In a recent interview with Australian website Gameplayer, Lepage said, “It’s NEVER gonna come out on the PS3 or the Wii.” The article then states that Lepage “candidly told us how the PS3 can’t handle AI nearly as well as the 360.” Now, here’s the strange thing. There’s no direct quote from Lepage that states the PS3 can’t handle the AI. There’s just this nebulous statement by the article’s author. Is it possible that it’s true? Absolutely. But without a direct attribution, I find it hard to accept as fact. Why not just quote Lepage directly, if he said that?

We all saw that Double Agent was exclusive to the 360 for what, 10 days? Two weeks? Why shouldn’t we expect the same thing with Conviction? It may not happen, but I think it will take more than this to convince anyone. Looks like it’s back to the old ‘wait and see.’

While you wait, you can check out Conviction trailers and screens at FileFront.

Oh well, Metal Gear Solid 4, Tekken 6, and Parappa The Rapper 3 will be coming out sometime soon….Who gives a damn. The last Splinter Cell Game sucked dead ass! I gotta admit though, the best Splinter Cell game so far was Pandora Tomorrow. Quite comical as well :)

  2. Elliot says:

While I am not a developer, I do play a lot of games, and I just don’t understand how a statement like that holds an real weight? I have all 3 systems, and I honestly think all the developers should really shut up and learn to code better. That is their job to take advantage of new hardware and give us gamers what we want. It’s our money that pays their salary, so shut it and learn how to code with new hardware.

  3. Norbit says:

that Lepage “candidly told us how the PS3 can’t handle AI nearly as well as the 360.”

Even if that were true (and I doubt it is) it wouldn’t make any sense at all. The only reason for any PS3 games to be inferior to a 360 one is lazy coding.

  4. jonoby says:

Honestly who cares? Has anybody seen the new metal gear solid gameplay demonstration? i was drooling for the entire 15minutes. Now that game deserves to be called a next gen game. The ps3 will be at large when the beautiful game comes out. If you havent seen it then go on IGN. my ps3 siblings we have indeed brought the greatest ever gaming console known to man.

  5. THELORD says:

i dont give a dam, this new splinter cell guy looks like a hobo, plus we got MGS4, we dont need no second rate clone

  6. manni says:

All I hear from the Sony camp is wait, give it more time and so on, well i’m tired of waiting tomorrow i’m going to buy a 360.

The 360 has the games NOW, all the PS3 has is ports with bad frame rates, a big price tag and the hope of better games in the future.

I’ve waited a long time to make a careful decision but the final straw came after playing the Heavenly Sword demo round a mates house, i’m not a fan of MGS and the game I thought would convince me to choose PS3 was Heavenly Sword, being a big fan of GOW i’d expected HS to include the same great gameplay and improve on the visuals man was i disappointed, even given that it was a demo and not the finished game i can’t believe how badly it plays, infact after a short time playing the demo i wasn’t even sure if i was controling the game at all as it didn’t seem to perform the action i imput on the joypad and what happened to jump?

On top of that lair has been delayed and is said to have had similar issues and Madden only runs at 30fps and still manages to suffer from stuttering!

Enough is enough Sony i’ve waited longer than any other generation for the promise of great games but since you’ve failed to deliver and the 360 has the games, tomorrow i’m buying a 360 and checking out the bargain basket for some of those great games i’ve missed out on while waiting in vain for you to deliver some of what you promised.

  7. THELORD says:

@manni, the box doesnt have any great games now, just ps2 ports, you will regret your choice, i’ll put money on that, i mean you cant wait another week for warhawk? and from there on out its sweeeeeeeeeeeeeetness until the end of time, where if you get a box, youve got halo 3, and ummmmmmmmmm ummmmmmmmmm ummmmmmmmmmmm mass effect? i dont know xbox doesnt really have exclusives, because when its on the pc aswell its not a real exclusive, and if you count exclusives by that mark, the ps3 wipes the floor with the box

  8. THELORD says:

and manni, im actually willing to bet you are a troll, you meet the criteria: nothing you say is about the article, you have an agenda to push, ignorant remarks

  9. Norbit says:

    manni. Grow up.

  10. THELORD says:

@norbit, true, the quality of AI has nothing to do with the systems, the cell can pump out better AI than the 360, ubisoft is just dam lazy

  11. Xboxlenny says:

A good decision for the Xbox 360, why wait for crappy ports. The Xbox 360 is here to stay and microsoft have deep pockets. 3 year warrinty, Superior Xbox live, Halo 3,GTA exclusive content, and most multiplatformers come out for the Xbox 360 first. Xbox live arcade. I also want my games now, not later.

Yes the PS3 has lots of great things going for it. but is playing catch up. I will someday buy one too, but not for the cost now, lack of games, No Rumble and dont care for blu-ray. I want a gaming machine. For gaming now the Xbox 360 is the way. its common sence. dont be left high and dry with the PS3.

Also dont flame me, I also own a PSP, PS2, WII and many other past systems and will be getting a PS3 someday. im all about games. When the PS3 has a game i want, ill buy one. til then im more than happy with the Xbox 360.

  12. manni says:

    @THELORD

Hey if you are typical of PS3 gamers i’d be playing online had i chosen to buy a PS3 then my choice is even easier to make, it’s sad that you find it necessary to launch personal attacks on gamers who don’t choose the same console as you.

As for my remarks being “ignorant” i’d like to know how you came to that conclusion? I’ve waited 2 years to join this generation, an ignorant or i’ll informed gamer would have bought a console at launch without weighing up the pros and cons of each system.

If anybody is ignorant it’s you, you’re clearly a fanboy who can’t come to terms with someone choosing a different console over your beloved brand.

  13. License to ill says:

Never finished the last splinter cell, I got so bored I never went back…

Im most definitely not a 360 fanboy by any means but any game coming out multi platform between ps3 or 360, I would get the 360 version…

  14. Jordan says:

Am I the only one seeming to lose track of WHICH Splinter Cell is the most up-to-date version? There are just tooo many versions.

Jordan, please cut back on the profanity.

  15. THELORD says:

@manni, o i c, so im ignorant? ok, but you just generalized all ps3 gamers(that is ignorant) you assume i am a day 1 owner of a ps3(thats ignorant), and i can come to terms with someone buying a different system just fine, if you’ll notice i respond to trash remarks with trash remarks, i dont create them, but i will give you the benefit of a doubt and enlighten your ignorance about my views of the 360: I am bias towards the system, no doubt about that, but the reason i am bias is because i have had 5 break on me, that would tick just about anyone off, i have a wii, and a ps3, i did not buy anyone of these systems from launch, and you better believe i did research on all of them till i was blue in the face, and if you did any research you would see the ps3 is the best value for the buck by far, if you weigh all pros and cons, it really is the ps3 that comes out on top. i am no fanboy, i just find it hard to believe that so many people dont believe microsoft is screwing them, and i try to show people that they are, and i get flamed as a fanboy for doing so, you are free to get whatever system you like, thats your pervue thats your privledge, but i hope that you are one of the lucky ones who does not get a 360 that breaks a few months down the road. If my comments offended you im sorry, it was again my bias towards microsoft. I dont hate all things on xbox, im gonna miss not playing halo 3, unless i win the lottery, then i will buy another 360, and gears was awesome, but its out for pc soon so i will play it there. anyway this rant has grown tiresome and relentlessly full of poor grammar, ta ta for now, (dont judge all ps3 gamers based off my one hastefully written response, thats ignorant, and yes, my bias has spawned a little bit of ignorance towards the box, but no where near as much as you)

  16. egon says:

    Hey, thelord….

If your Xbox breaks, they send you a new one for free. I sure hope you didn’t buy a brand new one those “5 times” it broke for you. Somehow I find your story a bit hard to believe.

I don’t get it. The system breaks, you call them up.. they ship you a box.

You put the console in the box, and 2-3 weeks later you get it back.

The PS2 repair system was far worse than this experience has been.

  17. manni says:

    @THELORD-OF-LIARS

    First off I said,

“Hey IF you are typical of PS3 gamers i’d be playing online had i chosen to buy a PS3 then my choice is even easier to make”

which was clearly not a generalization about PS3 owners but a dig at you, who called me “ignorant” and a “troll” just for choosing a different brand of console.

Now you come out with the old fanboy favorite that you’ve had 5 xbox 360’s break on you and suggest that you’d have to win the lottery to get another even though there is a three year warranty and MS would have replaced them free of charge.

That makes you a fanboy and a liar, I’m glad that I DON’T generalize about gamers as if they all behaved like you I would never play another game.

When people think my comments are wrong and want to list their reasons i’m always happy to debate them but i’m not going to waist any more time responding to personal attacks from liars.

  18. THELORD says:

sorry manni, yes i had 5 360’s, what r u a paid ms shill?, did i buy them all, no, where did i say i bought all 5? the inconveinience of sending them in and waiting 3 weeks a piece pissed me off enough. and who is making personal attacks again?

  19. THELORD says:

and manni, the 3 year warranty, came about only mere weeks ago, all of my experiences with the 5 that broke, YES ITS TRUE, was before that warranty. and the warranty only covers the RROD nothing else, you are buying a crap system that is guaranteed to break, your loss bucko, but keep telling yourself your all that, seems to do well for your already shattered and meaningless exsistance.

  20. mike says:

manni and THELORD u guys are so sad!! Arguing about games consoles lol!

Why do people always feel they have to pick fights with people just because that person chose a different console to their favourite, it’s kind of pathetic!

  21. Maylon says:

    @Mike

Because this story is about gaming. Would you call auto enthusiasts pathetic for debating over whether Nissan pwns Acura? Yikes, just answered my own question

  22. manni says:

    @THELORD

Don’t be a hypocrit and a liar, cast your eyes back at my first comment it was not addressed at you and contained no personal attacks.

You started that and i suppose i’m just meant to take it without responding am I?
I’m a construction worker and currently unemployed so i’d like to get paid by MS or Sony but sadly it aint going to happen.

“sorry manni, yes i had 5 360’s, what r u a paid ms shill?, did i buy them all, no, where did i say i bought all 5?”

You didn’t exactly say it and I never said you did but you claimed that,

“im gonna miss not playing halo 3, unless i win the lottery, then i will buy another 360″

    and then you said,

“the 3 year warranty, came about only mere weeks ago, all of my experiences with the 5 that broke, YES ITS TRUE, was before that warranty”

The warranty is back dated so if you’d had 5 break on you it would not have cost you anything, so why would you need to win the lottery to replace it?

“and the warranty only covers the RROD nothing else”

The red rings are not an actual fault in themselves they are like an error indicator and would be present for almost any major fault with the console so don’t try and tell me you had different faults that were not covered.

Lets face it you have never even owned a 360, the only reason i wouldn’t go so far as to call you a paid shill is that Sony would never hire someone with as little intelligence as you, you’re clearly just a pathetically deluded fanboy.

  23. manni says:

    @mike

Read my first comment I didn’t pick a fight, I just responded to the personal attacks on me in my later comments, infact for those that are interested in Blu-ray movies the PS3 is good value, i’m not a fanboy I just made a comment from my perspective as a gamer, anyone on the net can make a comment about why they have chosen the PS3 and i’m not the one that’s gonna call them a “ingnorant troll”

  24. SirPyros says:

I actually would beg to differ with most people on here. The systems do make a difference when coding A.I. routines.

The PS3 has the Cell processor which has 1 PowerPC Core and 6 usuable SPE’s (number crunchers). The 6 SPE’s are amazing at doing calculations but they lack two very important things, 1 is direct access to cache memory and 2 branch prediction which is a necessity when writing advanced A.I. code. Since all branch prediction and cache access have to go through the 1 PPC Core you have a potential bottleneck, but more than likely you have to write code in a very different manner that is a serious pain in the butt.

The Xbox360 has the Xenon processor has 3 PowerPC Cores (nearly identical to the one on the Cell) all with access to cache and branch prediction as well as VMX-128 Extensions.

Can the PS3 handle A.I. code of course it can. Is it cost productive to have to recreate a large portion of the code for your game to work well on the PS3 which has much lower penetration rate and a much lower software attach rate? That is up to the developer to decide. Apparently Ubisoft has made it’s decision.

To me Pandora Tomorrow was the worst Splinter Cell game

  26. RyanXmetal says:

I think both systems have an equal perspective…there’s no way to say one is better than the other. Sure, the PS3 has blu-ray…but honestly, normal DVD’s are fine with me. The 360 has games, and lots of them. They also have LIVE going for them. It seems like Sony is trying to overcompensate, with huge advances, but not much to back them up. However, the 360 does suffer slightly in the way of graphics…but is still a steady contender. I just want to see what’s next

  27. CS Gas says:

All i have to say is Splinter Cell is my favorite of all the Tom Clancy games, and now i can’t play the new one because some fat cat at ubisoft decided that PS3 didn’t matter any more. well, personally i think that the people a ubisoft should be ashamed of themselves, and because of this decision, a lot of people are going to be highly disappointed, and may never purchase ubisoft games again, for fear of being denied any future sequels.

P.S. Manni and THELORD, get a room, cause nobody cares about your arguement.

  28. kumon says:

if microsoft did pay for the exclusive, they shouldve gone for something else cuz splinter cell double agent sucked

  29. CS Gas says:

PS3 can’t handle AI as well as 360 but Nintendo DS CAN???? That’s a load of crap and everyone knows it!
