Sony’s Profits and Revenues Increase

It’s that time of the year, where we get to review financial results for the previous fiscal year. Sony has reported its results for the year ending on March 31, 2008, and it was generally good news as both revenues and profits were up from last year. Net income rose to $3.51 billion, which is almost 300% last year’s $1.2 billion. Much of the success can be attributed to the electronics division; those stupid Bravia ads must be working, because they posted record sales and operating income along with CyberShot cameras, reports GI.biz.
The videogame division also saw significant improvement, with sales increasing 26.3% over last year to $12.2 billion, closing the losses from $2.21 billion down to $1.18 billion. Sony claims this is thanks to lower production costs of the PS3 and a strong performance by the PSP, particularly in Japan.
The PlayStation 2 continuing to sell extremely well at $129 probably ain’t hurtin’, either.
Important Note: The chart you see above has no relevance to this story. But, it is, irrefutably, a chart. And this sort of story deserves a chart of some sort.

I don’t know why PS3 selling more, and Sony making more money as a result, is surprising to anyone. The PS3 is a cheap way to get a Blu-Ray player, Blu-Ray won over HD-DVD, this is why people buy the PS3. The PS3 selling more than the 360 doesn’t mean it’s a better system either.
@ JohnMann
Yeah you are absolutely right, people aren’t buying it to play games on LMAO
Check out EA’s financial report for last year that was released today. This is how much money they made from each consoles games sales:
PS2 – $166M
PS3 – $152M
360 – $128M
Wii – $75m

The dumb-ass xbot rant that people aren’t buying the PS3 for games wasnt true when they started it and its even more laughable now
@Norbit
That’s still just one developer, even if that developer is quite large. Until you have figures from EACH developer, then you have no case. Neither does the Blu Ray argument, but it sounds plausible to me. I don’t even play my PS3 anymore. It sits on my floor and collects dust. I played it for like 2 days to beat Uncharted, then a couple of days for the Metal Gear Online Beta, but I haven’t touched it since.

According to NPD the PS3’s US attach rate is higher than the 360’s was at the same time after launch in the US. Did the 360 have no games a year and a half after launch as well?
I didn’t say it doesn’t have any games. It has roughly 150 games. Xbox 360 has roughly 370 games. I’m not complaining about the lack of games. I’m complaining about the lack of good games that aren’t also on the 360. If there’s a game (Like GTA 4) that’s on both PS3 and 360, chances are I’ll get it for 360. I haven’t had any problems with my 360, while my PS3 has overheated when placed in the same spot (I only have room for 1 console in my setup at a time, so when the other isn’t being used it sits either on the top of the center or on the floor). All of my friends have 360s. In my opinion, the online play is better on 360. Although, the internet browser is REALLY nice. Especially downloading custom-made themes instead of buying them on 360.
