Sony just recently released the fiscal results for its second quarter (running from July 1, 2007 – September 30, 2007) and things are going fairly well, even if that means that Sony lost a lot of cash. While the company as a whole is in the black once again, from a loss of 20.8 billion yen last year to a 90.5 billion yen operating profit, the gaming division saw its losses jump from 43.5 billion yen last year to 96.7 billion.
“As we have taken the necessary accounting treatment to deal with the impaired value of inventories of the previous PS3 models in the first half, we aim to break even at the operating level in the second half, or better than breakeven,” said Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda.
Sales were up from the previous quarter, however, with 1.31 million PS3 systems “delivered,” compared to 710,000 in Q1. Due to the wording, it’s not clear if that figure is shipped or sold systems.
The real tale will come once we see results of the third and fourth quarters, as the 40 GB PlayStation 3 is more affordable and is aiming to increase sales.
“With the release of the new model, we are working hard to achieve the global sales target of 11.0 million PS3s for the full year, in line with the earlier estimate,” Sony investor relations manager Tatsuyuki Sonoda said.

“however, with 1.31 million PS3 systems “delivered,””
Its almost definitely shipped.
BTW Yesterday you incorrectly reported that Microsoft had SOLD 13.4m 360s and had SOLD 1.8m in the last quarter. That should have said SHIPPED because A) Microsoft never release sold figures B) They didn’t sell 1.8m in the last quarter and C) The official shipped figure released for the end of June ‘07 was 11.4m so 1.8m shipped added to that makes a shipped total of 13.4m which is the figure they released.
The most accurate figures available put the 360s worldwide sales currently at 11.2m as of October ‘07.
