Stephany reported yesterday on Sony’s promise to bring 380 titles to the PS3 (which includes both Playstation Network and retail games). Well, it seems those numbers may have been a little bit inflated.

The 380 PS3 titles report came straight from Kaz Hirai himself, but an SCEA spokesman clarified that Hirai was citing international figures.  In reality, 145 PS3 titles are headed to the US, with 15 first-party titles such as Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, LAIR, Little Big Planet, Eye of Judgment, and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune set to come out during the 2007 fiscal year.  Third-party titles that are set to come out during 2007 fiscal year include Coded Arms: Assault, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

I had a feeling the original 380 PS3 titles announcement was a little weird.  At least the SCEA spokesman was able to clarify things rather than have us scratching our heads at the end of the fiscal year wondering where the hell all of the 380 titles went.  One thing I’d like to know is how many of the new 145 PS3 titles will be Playstation Network titles and how many will be retail.  Only time will tell.

  2. Norbit says:

Er, what exactly do you think Sony have done wrong here? They announced 380 new titles worldwide to their shareholders. They didn’t at any point say there would be that many released in the US. f

  3. Daniel says:

    @Norbit:

You’re correct. They did nothing wrong. But when people hear a number like 380 new titles in the 2007 fiscal year, usually no one thinks worldwide. We’re a very near sighted society and only really care about what will effect us. 145 new titles coming to the US is a huge drop off from the 380 “worldwide” titles. The purpose of this article is to clarify how many titles the US market would see.

  4. Mario says:

Just wondering if those 145 will help boost sale of the PS3 in the US and UK. Sony has a tuff time ahead trying to catch up on 360 and Wii sales. Usually the US is the focus of most companies because we spend them most.

  5. mookmookie says:

Has been clarified already kids…….380 new titles worldwide by march 08, 200 retail games and 180 downloadable titles. Sony has promised PlayStation 3 owners that at least 145 titles are on the way to the US, which includes approximately 40 PSN titles and more than 105 boxed games.

Yeah right the US is the focus of most companies so thats where we will see all the stuff goin, meanwhile here in the uk which broke a record selling ps3s on launch get crap in the ps store!! then you get japan that get good stuff even tho they would rather clean up virtual dog shit on there nintendo!!!
Come on more stuff in UK store!!!!!

  7. Warriorwth says:

little big planet and the agency are gonna kill the wii and the 360

  8. William says:

I don’t see any games killing the Wii or the 360. I do think these titles will bring PS3 up to par by 2008. The Wii is really in a whole market by itself and I think people are confused thinking it’s really a part of the next-gen battle. With Halo 3 around the corner, the 360 will not be hurting. Honestly, I’d love to see all three systems do well. This way, we as gamers will benefit.

  9. Dave says:

…Yer and the PS2 can do Toy Story quality graphics!

Way to go Sony keep making exaggerated claims you’ll never match and keep losing customers you fooled the last time.

“Way to go Sony keep making exaggerated claims you’ll never match…”

    Heard of Microsoft? :???:

  11. BigMan says:

Why the big hoohaa about 380 down to 145. Sony were not talking to any individual gaming community, rather they were talking to their shareholders and the last time I heard was that investors and shareholders want to know what you as a company are doing worldwide.

  12. Sagarat says:

I guess it is unfortunate when Sony make sa comment to shareholders, and it is taken out of context for the gaming comunity.

The origional 380 is all content for all regions, so if Lair comes out in Europe, N.America, and Japan, that’s counted as three releases.
The 145 number is, as Sony was quick to clarigy, the numbet that everyone was thinkling about. Sony are going to cop flack about this, but it is al least partly the fault of news sites not checking the facts.

  13. Ryan says:

I do not see why people keep making quick quips at Nintendo. I mean Sony is doing bad because they made bad decisions, while Nintendo has been clever and tactiful this generation, so therefor they deserve all the success. Anyone who has witnessed the marketing blitz which England has gone through will understand what i mean.

  14. Norbit says:

@ William. I really don’t see Halo 3 making much of a difference to 360 sales. There are 10.5m 360 owners and Halo sold 8m copies so how many people do you think are waiting for Halo 3 to be released who don’t already own a 360 especially when you consider that Halo is likely to appeal to the same gamers who like Gears of War? On the other hand there are new Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and Gran Turismo games being released on the PS3 and there are millions of people eagerly awaiting them who don’t have PS3s yet. The fact that those 3 games are completely different genres will also make for more sales.

@ Sagarat. That’s BS to put it bluntly. Sony are not counting the same game being released in different territories as different games from the 200 boxed titles. If you look at a list of upcoming PS3 games (theres one on Wiki) you will see there are around 200 boxed games in development but a lot of them will only be released in Japan.

@ Ryan. Sony aren’t doing bad, in fact they are doing better than the last 2 generations. Not selling as fast as the Wii doesnt = bad.

  15. Shike says:

    @ Norbit

No, of course Sony aren’t doing bad . . . because you know, being rather unprofitable is how we define doing well in bizzaro world >_>’

Also, this is Sony’s fault for the context they said it in. Titles is NOT the same as SKUs. Saying “380 PS3 game SKUs” surely sounds less impressive though.
