Rumors have been flying around for weeks about a possible price cut for the Playstation 3. And like any good rumor, it’s been switching back and forth ever since from being confirmed to being denied. But it’s all mostly been speculation so far. So how can you tell if a price cut is coming or not? How about when the guy in charge of Sony says they’re looking into it?

Sir Howard Stringer (yes, the guy’s really been knighted), chairman and chief executive of Sony Corp., had an interview with the Financial Times recently, where he revealed that the company is actually considering a price cut for the system.

“Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise, and a very good business model, compared with ours . . . because it’s cheaper. That [price cuts] is what we are studying at the moment. That’s what we are trying to refine.”

Based on these statements, it sounds like they are considering a price cut; they just need to decide how much of a price cut and to start it. Sony has a goal to ship 11 million units this year, so they may need to put it into effect before the Christmas season. And with their production costs lowering constantly, some analysts are predicting a cut of about $100. If the Xbox 360 price cut comes through too, I may just have to get both systems come December.
