ps3 Sony CEO Stringer Talks Blu ray vs. HD DVD and PS3 Momentum

Howard Stringer, as CEO of Sony, is obviously expected to be a major proponent of Blu-ray. That’s why it was so shocking to hear him quoted last week as saying that Blu-ray was in a stalemate with HD-DVD.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he didn’t exactly take those sentiments back, but instead took the opportunity to say that Blu-ray was better. In the process, he also discussed the PS3 as a Blu-ray player, as it’s one of the cheapest options – mentioning how he could see it eventually being as successful as the PS2 and that the system’s momentum is similar to the PS2’s.

The momentum shift and the energy behind PS3 in time for Christmas is extremely fortuitous,” he said. “It was planned by the PlayStation group, but I think this momentum now — particularly the number of games coming out, including our own as well as third-party — is the same as it was with PlayStation 2.

It’s a truly bold claim to think the PS3 could ever sell as much as the PS2, but if Blu-ray does take off and the PS3 remains one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market, maybe it’s not so absurd a notion.

kirinle777, ur a fucking moron, the cheapest hd dvd player is a third of the failstation 3 which is the cheapest blu ray in existence, the failstation has already lost the console war already, theres no market for a 10 year old console the next xbox will kick the failstation out of the water into oblivion and the pc is way better cos we have games that are too powerful for the failstation 3 such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and CRYSIS and others.

The Cheapest HDDVD player is NOT, I repeat, NOT full HD 1080p. The cheapest HDDVD player that really plays HD is $399.99 (See above link). #2. The XBoxHD that is launching Q4 2008 will be equipped with an internal HD-DVD player, a spin-off of the CELL processor and Dual TV tunners. For a grand total of somewhere in the price range of $649.99+. By the time the XBoxHD is out, HD-DVD will be gone.

Just so you know, Beta NEVER led sale in the USA. Not for one single day.

Shadowmancer you’re a fucking moron. We’re talking about PS3 & XBOX here, do you even read what we’re saying. PC games is a piece of shit anyway, you have to upgrade your video card and memories and processor when new powerful game come out. You heard me. You’re talking just like XBOX boss. You just mad because your wife won’t let u buy 1? Bluray and PS3 will kill XBOX like it did with predecessor.

  15. @Kirinle777

I agree. PC gaming is a mess because of all the upgrades you have to do. When the new XBoxHD comes out next year, it might have a shot to beat PS3. But for now the 360 is all but dead. Also, the Nielsen HiDef Sales numbers were release yesterday and it seem that HD-DVD is dead too. Transformers was supposed to be HD-DVD’s savior. That plan didn’t work. Then the $99 junk HD-DVD players came out. That plan didn’t work either. The format war is finally over. Wow! That was quick. Here are the numbers:
