sonic classic Sonic RPG Q&A with Bioware

Wired Blog Network has a Q&A up with BioWare’s CEO Ray Muzyka and President Greg Zeschuk as they explore the new Sonic RPG coming out for the DS. Muzyka and Zechuck don’t go into detail on game mechanics, talking instead about designing for the DS and why they think Sonic has appeal.

Muzyka talks about wanting to create a game that would be popular with both younger and older audiences and have an international appeal. That’s what motivated them to take Sonic, a beloved simple straight forward platform game and create an RPG from it.

“We plan on taking those core Sonic elements that fans love about games and incorporating them into a brand new adventure that will feature the best of both worlds: all the fast-paced action of Sonic, plus a deep and engaging storyline that will keep players on the edge of their seats.  By staying true to those Sonic elements that fans are already familiar with, and injecting our own unique BioWare flavor, we plan to make that transition as smooth and exciting as possible.”

BioWare is sure they can create a DS game that has all the impact of a tradition BioWare project and can be easily picked up and played for long periods or in short bursts. Players can expect a fast paced RPG with all the color and flash of the Sonic franchise. When asked whether the new RPG would stay true to the Sonic Universe, Zeschuck was evasive, but assured readers of one thing.

We aren’t ready to discuss details of the game just yet, but we can say that we are committed to delivering an original and truly amazing experience within the Sonic universe.  You’ll see all the popular characters and story elements that Sonic fans love.  We will also add a bevy of new features and environments that will provide some exciting new experiences.

If BioWare can pull this off, not only will they be breaking into a new trend for handhelds, but Sonic may just get back in the race.
