Slow Sunday Flashback: Night Trap (Sega CD)

If you were a Sega CD owner and a fan of the lost genre of FMV (Full Motion Video) games, then you more than likely remember this game. This was definitely one of my favorite Sega CD titles. Perhaps only Dragon’s Lair tops it. I know it was B-style cheesy, but that’s what made is so awesome.

For me, the great thing about the title was the cheesy B move acting. Basically, you control several cameras during a slumber party and have to trap and stop the invaders from putting an end to their party. The game was highly controversial at the time and considered a violent game. The same people causing controversy concerning games these days were the same ones who tried to have this game banned. I remember many news stories about this game where they tried to convince the general public that it would cause kids to do violent things. Night Trap and Mortal Kombat were the two games most responsible for the creation of the awesomely useless rating system we have now. If this game were re-released today, I’m sure it would be a JT favorite.

After being released for the Sega CD in 1992, the title eventually found it’s way to the PC, 3DO and Sega 32X. The title was removed from many store shelves after Senator Lieberman and others convinced America that the game taught people how to trap and kill women. Lieberman also expressed his opinions that the game promoted child abuse. Many video game critics still consider it one of the worst games ever, but I’m going to put it somewhere at the top. I’m personally a “B†Movie fan and love how they brought the cheesy acting to a game. I’m also a big fan of the lost art of FMV games.
