September Hardware NPDs: Xbox 360 Outsells Wii

The five week span encompassing the September NPD numbers is a wow-inducing one. Undoubtedly the release of Halo 3 was largely responsible for this, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive – the Xbox 360 actually outsold the Wii in September. Neither the PlayStation 3 nor Xbox 360 was close to doing so in any recent month.
Here are the hardware numbers for September (August numbers in parentheses):
- Xbox 360 – 527,800 (276,700)
- Wii – 501,000 (403,600)
- PlayStation 3 – 119,000 (130,600)
- PlayStation 2 – 215,000 (202,000)
- Nintendo DS – 495,800 (383,300)
- PlayStation Portable – 284,500 (151,200)
Considering this period was longer than August’s, it isn’t surprising to see the Wii make a jump from just over 400k all the way up to 500k, but that’s still a mind blowing number. There wasn’t a single big release on the Wii in all of September, yet it pushed half a million units. The same can be said about the DS, which had a tremendous month. You could even include the PSP in this discussion; nearly 300k is nothing to sneeze at, even if it does pale in comparison to the DS.
The Xbox 360 is self explanatory, and just goes to show you what a game like Halo 3 – combined with a $10 million marketing campaign – will do for you.
The PlayStation 3’s drop is a tad surprising, given the release of Heavenly Sword and the various sports games surrounding September. Potential buyers were perhaps enveloped in the Halo 3 marketing campaign to end all campaigns? That seems likely, as the Xbox 360 made a lot of noise in both August and September between the superior version of Madden, BioShock, and Halo 3. PlayStation 3, on the other hand, more or less sat idly by. We’ll have to see in the coming months what impact the holiday season and price drop will have.

Meanwhile, in you delusional support for Sony, you quote Japanese hardware totals that nobody gives a damn about.
With Halo 3 and 10 million in marketing and the 360 still essentially ties the Wii. How messed up is that? The wii didn’t even see any major titles and it could still compete with Halo 3. Unbelievable.
This just goes to show that Halo 3 didn’t steal a a single hardware sale from Nintendo. Maybe there is some truth to the idea that the 2 consoles don’t really compete. It does look like the 360 stole some sales from the PS3 though. Considering there was an extra week in this months NPDs and the PS3 STILL dropped pretty big, thats not good. Even norbit has to recognize that.

because you have to take into consideration that the Nintendo Ds retails at $120 and the PSP retails at $160, the Wii retails at $250 and the PS3 at $599.
Also, you have to take note that Microsoft has no handheld.
Cummulative figures and $ sales don’t mean as much as units sold.
If I had a product that sold at $7 million, and you had a product that sold at $2, and I cumulatively made $14 million and you made $1 million, who is the more successful business man?

No they aren’t. Microsoft have one product that sells well in the states, OK in the EU and appallingly in Japan. Sony and Nintendo have a number of gaming products that collectively put them leagues ahead of Microsoft in popularity.

The two company’s that have made money from gaming, Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft have yet to make any profit and are still trying to recoup the $5.7bn loss they made on the Xbox. Does that answer your question or are you still going to try and argue against undeniable fact?
At the end of the day even with Microsoft’s biggest game, a range of console prices, an unprecedented level of hype, an unprecedented level of negativity against Sony and an advertising budget the likes of which gaming has never seen they still didn’t’ manage to sell more gaming consoles in the US last month than Sony. Sony were still the more popular company of the two for gamers to hand money to for hardware.
There is nothing to say about microsoft as a company because nintendo and sony are leagues away. You can’t say alot of good things about sony sales lately. anyone here anything about the microsoft handheld rumor. i’ve heard, but very little.
Norbit, I don’t think Microsoft’s goal is to compete with the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. The PlayStation 3’s poor performance really can’t be defended, and sooner or later it’s not going to be able to rely on its older brother to carry the load.
