Sega Denies Rumors of Dreamcast 2

Chris covered this “stupid rumor” yesterday (his words, not mine; though I totally agree), and now Sega has responded to speculation that they are planning to re-enter the console market with a new Dreamcast system. So, does the company have any intention of getting back into the console making business? No, no, no, a thousand times, no. Sega of America PR Director Charlie Scibetta spoke to GameDaily:
“We’re very happy being a platform agnostic company and have moved up the ranks the past three years from #11, to #9, and now stand at #6 in terms of our market share by units among third-party publishers. We like our current strategy and have no plans to change in the middle of this outstanding growth.”
He also added very clearly that Sega “has no plans to get back into the console business.” So there you have it: there’s no “Dreamcast 2″ on the way. This should really come as a surprise to no one; emphasis on “should.” I’m sure this rumor will continue to fester deep within the reaches of internet forums for a long long time, even with a flat out denial.

I’d like to see a day where they re-enter the market, but perhaps for just producing classic consoles.
Yes, I know there’s classic games being released all the time on the newer platforms, but it doesn’t replace the old experience of blowing into cartridges or having the feel and design of the controllers in your hands.
Although it probably wouldn’t be very successful because there are only an few people who would be interested, it’s still something I would enjoy.
Also, STFU buying old ones, I want support as well!

I would think that someone would make a mega-console to emulate almost every old console. There’s always GameTap.

it’s not just about playing the games, it’s about having the authentic controller/console/cartridge experience.
Hooking it up to an old t.v. that you found in your grandparents basement, and playing all afternoon to finally beat Dr. Robotnik (wtf eggman?!?)
I think SEGA should get back into the console business. If they do, and make the older Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and Sega Dreamcast games work with the “Dreamcast 2″ the sales would possibly skyrocket. I personally would encourage SEGA to create the “Dreamcast 2.” The chances of it getting profits if they charged as much money as Nintendo would be good. I still have a working Sega Genesis and Sega CD. My brother has a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. But all-in-all, SEGA’s fault was firing the President of SEGA of America the day before the Dreamcast’s launch. If he was still President, SEGA’s games would be better and they would still be in the console business. If they let the rumors continue and their stocks go up, there could have been a chance for a “Dreamcast 2″ I will always support SEGA for a next-get console. I think the Dreamcast though makes the PS2 look like a piece of junk. Faster Loading times, better textures, less lags, 4 player compatibility built in, etc. PS2 is a piece of junk! If you don’t believe me, get Sonic Adventure 2 and a Dreamcast. We should still support SEGA nonetheless. We just need to encourage SEGA to make a new console. My thoughts is Sony’s PS3 is going to be like the Sega Saturn. It is just a PSP supporting Blue-Ray with a different menu. Hope you all agree. SEGA PWNS SONY
