New X-Files Film Entitled "I Want to Believe"
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 at 2:51 pm under Gamer Life

Nothing makes me more giddy than The X-Files, so I’m excited to bring word that the new X-Files flick has finally gotten a name: The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Okay, it’s not the most original title they could have come up with, but it is fitting, to say the least. The title was signed off by 20th Century Fox today, and the film is still on track for a release on July 25.
The slogan will be familiar to anyone who’s ever watched the show. The classic poster that sits behind Mulder’s desk in his basement office (and behind mine, for that matter) bears the words below a picture of a UFO. It appeared as early as the very first episode, and was first spoken during the fourth episode, “Conduit.” I’ll stop there before I get into then number of times it’s actually said.
“It’s a natural title,” said director and co-writer Chris Carter. “It’s a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. ‘I Want to Believe.’ It really does suggest Mulder’s struggle with his faith.”
Carter claims it was the title he wanted from the onset, but Fox executives were hesitant as they were unsure if it was a marketable title.
The first film held a loose subtitle of “Fight the Future” due to the way the words appeared on promotional posters. Those words ultimately ended up in an episode later in the series, in the episode “Three Words.” Guess what three words they were.
Alright, I’m stopping now. Seriously.

I’m Obsessed with an MMO – And You'll Never Guess Which
Posted by Chris on Saturday, April 12th, 2008 at 10:51 am under Editorials, Features, Computer, Games, Game Platforms

If I were presented with a list of all the many sub-genres that could fall under the umbrella of MMO games and was asked to order them from the most interesting to least interesting, I think I’d have the typical mainstream reaction. Orcs, elves and magic – anything of that nature will always interest me from a fiction standpoint, so it seems like I’d be naturally drawn to World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online. While I do currently play WoW, and have stints where I’ll forego sleep and food to play it late into the night, it’s a casual game for me. I might go days without playing. LotRO was my fantasy game; an open-world game set in the universe of The Lord of the Rings was honestly my one definitive dream game for many years.
So it’s now surprising, to say the least, to look back on the past several weeks at what game has occupied more of my time than anything else during that span. Goal Line Blitz is played through your browser and is almost entirely text-based; it’s basically an American football MMO. It’s still in beta and has many shortcomings. The concept is one of those things you say, “Oh, that sounds neat” about and never pay another second of thought to.
Instead, GLB is occupying my mind all the time and it’s got me glued to my computer seat. Read the full article
Found on eBay: The Licker
Posted by Stephany on Saturday, March 29th, 2008 at 11:47 am under Sony, Capcom, Gamer Life, Nintendo, Microsoft, Games, Game Consoles, Game Companies
My older brother and I are in a ongoing competition with one another. This competition has been sometimes friendly, and at times argumentative - all in good fun mind you - about who is the biggest nerd. The crown of shame as I call it has passed forth between us on numerous occasions, especially when birthdays roll around. Why birthdays you ask? Because we tend to get each other the same sort of thing every year, and the present determines who is the biggest nerd. Usually the present in question focus on D&D, Star Trek, Star Wars, The X-Files and comic books, but one of the most prevalent gifts we buy each other is Resident Evil memorabilia.
During the glorious month of April, my brother will be getting the ultimate Resident Evil present, thus the nerd crown will be mailed back to me and I shall wear it with pride until he decides to outdo me in September. For you see, while perusing eBay last night for the perfect gift for my wonderful brother, I found a Halloween mask of “The Licker” from the Resident Evil series. This trumps any action figure, poster, pillow, chewing gum or the time he sent me a picture of him harassing Gillian Anderson (damn him anyway!).
I was tempted not to post this “buy it now” item on here lest one of you snatch it out from under me, but after serious consideration I just had to share it with you because it is just too darn cool.
New X-Files 2 Trailer Leaked Online
Posted by Jonathan on Thursday, March 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pm under Gamer Life, Videos
I think the producers of the X-Files sequel certainly know their audience. That’s the only way I can explain why the only trailers we’ve been able to see for the film so far are from fan-shot videos at different conventions and festivals, since those seem to generate a more underground buzz. This newest trailer was shown at the Paley Film Festival yesterday, and it already tops the previous trailer. Still no official word on exactly what the plot of this one will be, but seriously, who cares? It’s X-Files! Just hearing those six distinct notes is enough to send a chill down my spine.
Counter-Strike Won’t Be Left Behind
Posted by Chris on Thursday, March 6th, 2008 at 12:17 pm under Valve, Half-Life, Computer, Games, Game Platforms, Game Companies
Hardcore Counter-Strike fans are really nuts for their game. This much we know. Refusing to play Counter-Strike: Source, many stuck with an older version of the game so as to keep their precious view of the game intact. (Yes, I’m somewhat mocking you, but only so much as someone that would like to believe the ninth season of The X-Files never happened can.) So, as you can imagine, the pressure would really be on Valve should they ever make a sequel to Counter-Strike, which Gabe Newell called “an incredibly important product to this company.”
Eurogamer transcribed part of what Valve’s VP of Marketing, Doug Lombardi, recently had to say in an interview with GameTrailers. While he didn’t announce any sort of sequel, he posed several hypothetical points about where Valve could potentially go with the game, nothing that it would fit in well in an Orange Box-style package.
“Do we go start over from scratch and build this whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that’s new that we’ve released and whatnot and put that out in a new box?”
“I think we’re leaning more towards the two more radical places than just sort of rolling up the new box and re-skinning the box and putting out all the new stuff.”
I’ve never really been into CS, just because the barrier of entry is absurdly high for someone that isn’t going to devote a lot of time to it so long after it was first released. I mean, I get killed sitting in the menus. But if Valve somehow redid the game with a slightly more simplified fashion (like they did with Team Fortress 2), I’d definitely be willing to give it a shot.
X-Files 2 Gets a Teaser Trailer and a Release Date
Posted by Jonathan on Monday, February 25th, 2008 at 6:42 pm under Gamer Life, Videos
July 25, 2008. Mark it on your calendar, because that’s the release date for the new X-Files movie. Apparently, at the recent WonderCon, people who sat in on a Q&A session with X-Files stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny were treated to a short teaser trailer for the movie, which ended with a release date. So of course, that trailer has now made its way onto the internet in shaky, handicam form. I have no idea what the film is about, but I already know I’ll be there on opening day. Really, I’ll take any new X-Files I can get my grubby paws on.
Video Games and Hollyweird Storm Vancouver
Posted by Stephany on Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 at 5:55 pm under Gamer Life, Portable, Games Industry, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Game Companies

UEFA Euro, which only happens every four years will have soccer (football) hooligans and video gamers alike all in a tizzy on May 20th. UEFA Euro 2008 will be released by Electronic Arts and celebrates the UEFA European soccer championship and allows the gamer to determine the plot line. According to Colin Macrae, EA’s Communications Director, the newest version will give gamers the ability “to control their player after scoring a goal so they can decide how to celebrate, where to run on the field, how to drop to their knees and the like”.
The Vancouver International Games Summit will take place May 21 to 22 and many a gaming company will be present for the second annual event. The gaming development industry is booming in Canada with not only the larger corporations but smaller animation houses as well. Vancouver is also starting to see film and television productions returning now that the writers strike is over and it is also speculated that the strength of Canadian currency is also a culprit for gaming and movie companies being developed and filmed in the country.
Even with video games sales eclipsing movie revenue and major studios cutting back on filming, Vancouver is still swamped with Hollywood royalty like Jennifer Aniston, Keanu Reeves, Kathy Bates, Ben Stiller and others who have or will be descending upon our northern neighbors because of filming. Radical Entertainment, named one of Canada’s top 100 employers will be releasing their game Prototype later on in the year and EA, Rockstar, and many other small gaming companies are located in Vancouver.
It looks like Canada may end up being the next Dallas when it comes to the gaming and internet industry. While we have been used to some of our favorite television shows being shot up there (X-Files for example), we will more than likely be seeing or hearing a whole lot more from those crazy and lovable canucks in the near future and I don’t mean just Red Greene either!

The Analog Gamer: Heretical Review
Posted by Shawn on Thursday, February 7th, 2008 at 2:26 pm under The Analog Gamer, Features, Warhammer, Gamer Life, THQ
I’ve made no secret that I’m a fan of the Warhammer 40K games, both digital and analog – though the cost of entry generally has kept me away from the tabletop versions of Warhammer 40K. I’ve lapped up reading materials, novels, and enjoyed the story put forth in the various video games that have graced both the PC and consoles over the last two decades but the one thing I’ve always craved was to bring the dark gothic universe of the Space Marines to life in a tabletop role-playing game session.
The process of conversion never went smoothly for me because I often found it hard to grab players the way the setting had grabbed me as both a DM and fan. When I first heard about the Warhammer 40K based RPG Dark Heresy I was jumping out of my seat in excitement.
Finally, an officially licensed and sanctioned RPG was coming!
Finally, I could hand a player a rulebook and let it sell the setting for me, I could work more on creating epic tales and framing character stories instead of worrying about the minutia of a rule conversion and balance!
Well Dark Heresy hit the street in a bittersweet event that has upset many fans of the game and those with high hopes for the continued expansion of the 40K universe outside the miniature rules or in video games. Not because of its lack of quality or faith with the setting but because of a business decision by Black Industries, the game’s publisher.
Immediately upon launch it was announced the line would end with just three books. Three Books? Would that be worth the investment or was I better off going back to the conversion drawing board? How could they possibly translate this system in three tomes? Well I picked up the core book with trepidation and began to read. Did they make a worthy game? Was it worth the $50 investment? Well let me tell you..

Bethesda: No New Star Trek Game
Posted by Shawn on Friday, February 1st, 2008 at 6:14 pm under Bethesda, Gamer Life, Game Companies

Bethesda’s Peter Hines has confirmed that there are no plans for a new Star Trek video game to accompany the new J.J. Abrams movie.
Pete Hines confirmed this news with FiringSquad but added, “Really interested in seeing the movie though. If anyone can make that movie awesome, it would be J.J. Abrams.”
Hines dealt another blow to Star Trek fans by confirming that Bethesda’s sister company ZeniMax Online Studios would not be picking up the Star Trek Online MMO abandoned by Perpetual entertainment.
“I don’t believe that is anything that we or ZOS is interested in or actively pursuing. “
As to whether there will be another game developed before the license runs out the only answer given was “TBD.”
Personally I think this comment by FiringSquad reader RedRay says it best:
Translation: We at Bethesda aren’t going to throw $10 million down a rat hole developing a game that will be crippled by non-programming nitwits at a movie studio mandating what we can and can not include in a game at the 11th hour of development for a movie that has at least a 50% chance of bombing at the box office.

Sony to Release MTV Shows on UMD
Posted by Chris on Friday, January 25th, 2008 at 7:12 pm under Portable, Sony, Gamer Life, Sony, Game Platforms, Game Companies

Sony has been pledging for quite some time now that they were not ready to give up on UMD, and the main reason that the format has sold poorly was because the content released on it was not what the PSP’s demographic wanted, was too pricey, or both. In an effort to begin changing things around, Sony has announced that it will distribute 10 MTV UMD titles for $15 a pop.
These will include shows such as Jackass, Beavis and Butt-Head, Aeon Flux, Wildboyz, and Viva La Bam.
Personally, the only one of these shows that I’m at all interested in is Beavis and Butt-Head; the rest of it unfortunately falls into that area of things I classify as “garbage on MTV that I don’t want to watch,” which is, ironically, virtually everything they air.
What do you want to see brought to UMD, PSP owners? I think we can agree that, in an ideal world, there would be content available that you could download to your memory stick, but what content do you want? I’d love to see The X-Files or Reno 911, and since the latter is on Comedy Central (owned by Viacom – hello MTV), it doesn’t seem like a stretch.
Nerd Movie Rundown: Shots from the Set of X-Files 2 and a Leaked Teaser for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, January 18th, 2008 at 4:13 pm under Gamer Life, Videos
Hey, we’re all nerds here; nothing wrong with that. And while I’m sure we all love video games, most of our geek interests don’t stop there. That’s why it seems only natural that our readers would be interested in some of the recent developments concerning some upcoming nerdcentric movies. First of all, some new shots from the set of the new X-Files movie hit the net recently. They don’t show much except for Mulder and Scully hunched over a computer in an office (But whose office is it? Get those rumors started, people). Concerning the plot, series creator, Chris Carter, said:
“We spent a lot of time on (the mythology) and wrapped up a lot of threads…We want a stand-alone movie, not a mythology conspiracy one.”
Next up, a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Trek movie being produced by J.J. Abrams was leaked recently. The video was obviously shot inside a theater, but you can clearly see a darkened construction crew piecing together the original U.S.S. Enterprise. Seems like this movie may be going for a grittier look than its predecessors.
You can check out the shots from the X-Files 2 set and the Star Trek teaser trailer by clicking their respective links below.
Michael Bay: HD-DVD Conspiracy Theorist
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, December 5th, 2007 at 8:57 pm under Sony, Games Industry, Hardware, Gamer Life, Microsoft, Sony, Game Platforms, Game Consoles, Microsoft, Game Companies

If you believe what Michael Bay says, then Microsoft is the puppeteer in a stalemate it doesn’t want anyone to win. The Transformers director is not particularly fond of HD-DVD – outright calling Blu-Ray “superior” – but he recently posted on his official forums with a nice conspiracy theory that X-Files fanatics like myself will just gobble up.
What you don’t understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.
Bay threatened to not do a Transformers sequel after Paramount announced it would release Transformers exclusive on HD-DVD, although he later retracted the threat.
It seems like a rather crazy notion that Microsoft would pump out so much money only to buy time, but crazier things have happened.

Wacky Jacky Subpoenas George W. Bush
Posted by Stephany on Thursday, September 6th, 2007 at 9:58 am under Gamer Life, Games Industry, Game Related Laws
Jack Thompson has filed documents with a federal court in Florida requesting to subpoena President George W. Bush for a deposition to retain Thompson’s license to practice law. Thompson, the bane of gamers everywhere, is in the midst of two ethic complaints which were filed by the Florida Bar and will face a court appointed mediator on November 26th. Wacky Jacky is currently suing the mediator, Judge Dava Tunis, along with the Florida Supreme Court and the Florida Bar.
Thompson’s reasons for subpoenaing The President are a bit esoteric and would make great fodder for an X-Files episode or anything else in the realm of conspiracy theories and Science Fiction. This bit of paranoia stems from the “nefarious” Blank Rome law firm, which represents the defendants in the Strickland vs. Sony lawsuit where an 18-year old in Alabama was allegedly under the influence of Grand Theft Auto when he murdered two police officers and a police dispatcher in 2004. Apparently, the “evil” Blank Rome firm are lobbyists as well as Republican donors and Thompson believes that the law firm was the main culprit in having him thrown off the case by an Alabama Circuit Court judge in November, 2005.
The Bar complaints filed by Judge Tunis are in relation to this case and Thompson’s conduct when he failed to have Bully declared a public nuisance last October.
In the document filed yesterday with the U.S. District Court, Thompson stated:
“I have already sent the George and Jeb Bush subpoenas to Referee Tunis for her signature. She may run on this, but she can’t hide. She must sign the subpoenas, as her filing [of the Thompson Bar complaints] with the federal court has made the testimony I seek in the depositions of both men highly relevant to my Bar defense. If the President’s position is that I do not get to depose him while he is in office, then I would note that Paula Jones’ lawyers were able to convince a federal judge otherwise. If President Bush is successful is convincing the court that I must wait until he leaves office, that’s something I am prepared to do.”
If indeed Thompson has to wait until President Bush leaves office in January 2009, Thompson would be able to get a dig in at the Florida Bar by making them wait to voice their complaints. But, does he actually think that President Bush would actually appear? In his own demented fantasy world, he may actually think this, but it is not very likely. Thompson is also seeking a subpoena for President Bush’s brother Jeb, the former governor of Florida - who’s next? Bush’s dogs Barney and Miss Beazley?

Princess Peach Lives!
Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 at 4:04 pm under Gamer Life
In this world there are fans, and then there are fans. Someone, somewhere, is obsessed about something. You have your Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, D&D, and Marvel fans who flock to the comic and sci-fi conventions dressed as their favorite character. You have your Rocky Horror fans who show up to midnight screenings dressed as a “sweet transvestite from Transexual Transylvania”. There are all sorts of fans, MacGeyver fans, anime fans and yes, even The X-Files still has fans - I love games as much as anyone, and I love going to conventions and gatherings of merry-dom. But I know where to draw the line. This woman does not - she is a habitual line crosser. Her and her beau (I assume he is) take the video game cake. She is not only dressed as Princess Peach, but there is also a picture of her on the site dressed as Link fighting Ganondork, I mean Ganondorf.
On second thought, maybe I am being too harsh, they look like a fun couple. (Ok, You win- I was nice…. May I please have my dog back now?)

Amazon Has Blu-Ray Movies 50% Off. CONSPIRACY!
Posted by Ron on Friday, March 9th, 2007 at 9:14 am under Sony, Sony, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Game Companies
While surfing along over at Evil Avatar I came across this post. Seems Amazon is having a 50% off sale on Blu-Ray movies. No I don’t mean to go all X-Files over here, but Sony shows us Home, and LittleBigPlanet, and now Blu-Rays are on sale. I wasn’t born yesterday Sony! There really is no sense in fighting it anymore, I know how this is going to end.
