Jetpacks. Zombies. Sackzilla. It’s all in this week’s PlayStation Store update along with more than a handful of videos, trailers and wallpapers for your PlayStation 3, plus the week’s installment of Rock Band tracks and demos of both NHL 09 and Soulcalibur IV. PSP owners, on the other hand, are being treated to a Cake Mania theme and a few wallpapers. Truly captivating content.

This week’s headliner is The Last Guy, the just recently announced game which uses aerial photos of well known locales to depict a city overrun by zombies. You’re tasked with rounding up the survivors and delivering them to a safe zone so they can be airlifted to what I imagine is a further perilous situation, but hey — it’s not your problem at that point. A demo was released last week and allowed you to try out part of the Asakusa, Tokyo level. The full version will run you $10 and can be purchased from inside the demo version should you want to save some time.

Also new to the Store this week is the Fallen Star expansion pack for Warhawk. For $8 (or $16 if you opt for the Warhawk Booster Combo which includes all three Warhawk expansions) you get an entirely new level and the Mk.1 Rocket Pack, which is that fancy-looking jetpack you see above. Given that the jetpack is an entirely new dynamic, the expansion includes new layouts for the existing game maps. And don’t forget about the free update that was released on Wednesday which added Trophy support along with a long list of other features and fixes, including tutorials that make the game much easier to jump into for newcomers.

Street Fighter IV Won’t Contain Console-Exclusive Characters

sfiv1 1 Street Fighter IV Wont Contain Console Exclusive Characters

For awhile now, people have been wondering if the upcoming Street Fighter IV was going to pull a “Soul Calibur” and make certain characters exclusive to different consoles. Luckily, the game’s producer, Yoshinori Ono, has stepped up to confirm that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will contain the same roster. As he explains:

Well this is just my policy, but I don’t want to give an exclusive character for any particular console. And that applies to downloadable characters as well. Because it’s not very fair, when you think about this as a board game or a tool.

Phew, that’s a relief. I’ve always had the same opinion on the matter, since it seems like the only ones losing out on the deal are the gamers. Of course, his statements also raise one other important question: “Downloadable characters!? What?”

Zero Punctuation Reviews Soul Calibur 4, But the Soul Still Burns

By Jonathan on Wednesday, August 20th, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Once again, Yahtzee Croshaw is back this week to bring a hilarious review; this time for Soul Calibur IV. Since the series is almost entirely dependent on fashion-illiterate fighters and women whose bosoms are more meticulously animated than anything else in the game, you can probably guess what Croshaw’s feelings are towards it. And that’s all before he even gets to the strange addition of Yoda and Darth Vader into the mix. He does bring up one interesting point though when he asks whether it’s Namco Bandai or LucasArts who benefits more from this conglomeration. Personally, I’d say LucasArts, since video games seem to be the only place these days where the Star Wars universe is being handled responsibly…and then, um, forced to battle fighters that resemble Elvis and S&M fetishists for possession of a mystical sword.

PlayStation Store 7/31: PixelJunk Eden and Three New Demos

The PlayStation Portable Store is a no-show this week, but there’s more than enough good stuff on the PS3 to make up for it. (Assuming you have a PS3, of course, otherwise you’ll just be left envious of those console-playing folks.)

PixelJunk Eden is the obvious highlight, making it the third PixelJunk game from Q-Games to be released on the PlayStation Network. Eden is a bit more abstract than the previous two games, which you could easily identify as a tower defense and racing game. $10 is the price for the full version of the game, or you can check out the demo that was released last week and read 1UP’s review.

LEGO Indiana Jones joins Madden 09 and FaceBreaker as the three new game demos this week. Madden’s demo is disappointingly short, letting you only play through the Madden IQ test and then a single trip down the field as you try to score a touchdown with the Giants in the closing moments of this year’s Super Bowl. It doesn’t really give you a great look at the game while the FaceBreaker demo does let you try out the create-a-player mode with your camera and play as many 90 second bouts as you wish.

Check out the full list of content after the break, including four new Rock Band tracks and some Soul Calibur music, which isn’t the slightest bit cheap.

E3 2008: Hands On With Castlevania Judgement (Or How To Make Me Lose Interest in Less Than a Minute)

castlevaniajudgement2 1 E3 2008: Hands On With Castlevania Judgement (Or How To Make Me Lose Interest in Less Than a Minute)

Castlevania Judgement is a fighting game for the Wii that’s set in the Castlevania world…and that should be enough to give anyone pause. The game unfortunately falls into that annoying category of titles on the E3 showcase floor that I picked up out of curiosity, realized I didn’t like, and ended up feigning interest for several minutes while the presenter tried to tell me more about it. Then I usually scurried off the instant their attention went elsewhere. In this case though, even the presenter didn’t seem to care too much. It’s really too bad though, since the concept of the game and a few of the ideas presented in it are a little different and interesting, but the whole package is just terribly executed.

Soulcalibur IV `Features` Video

Namco Bandai has unveiled a new trailer for Soul Calibur IV that highlights some of the game’s major features. It basically has the Product Marketing Manager, Wayne Shiu, talking about all the newer additions to this latest installment in the series. New characters, equipment damage, critical finishes, character customization: it’s all here. We’ll have to see how all this comes together when the game is released next week.

Rumor: Vader Coming to 360 Soul Calibur IV as DLC?

vaderyoda1 1 Rumor: Vader Coming to 360 Soul Calibur IV as DLC?

By now, I’d say it’s fairly obvious that Namco Bandai is planning a way for you to bring Yoda and Vader together in Soul Calibur IV one way or another. They keep saying that they’re exclusive to different consoles, but then they keep releasing media that strangely shows the two together. Now it seems that GamersReports has obtained some screenshots from the Xbox 360 version of the game that clearly show Vader as a selectable character. Their best guess (and mine) is that he’ll be offered as DLC sometime after the game’s release. Seriously, why don’t they just skip the whole exclusive character thing and release a Star Wars fighting game? …Oh, right, Masters of Teras Kasi

Critical Finishes Revealed in New Video for Soul Calibur IV

By Jonathan on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 at 3:49 PM
In Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony, Videos

It looks like Namco Bandai has unveiled a new video showing off the “Critical Finishes” in Soul Calibur IV. These new moves are essentially like the Fatalities in Mortal Kombat, except that they don’t actually kill anyone. As you can imagine, most of them look pretty badass, particularly the ones involving lightsabers. That one with the girl kissing Voldo is kind of weird though, but so is an clip with Voldo really.
