Soul Calibur IV Screens Show Off Character Creator
Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 at 10:05 am under Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games, Microsoft, Sony
Some screens have popped up for Soul Calibur IV showing off the character creator, single player mode menu, arcade mode, training mode, vs mode, museum, and even a comic. The game is looking pretty cool and when July 29th hits we will finally find out if the gameplay matches the neat screens and trailers we have been slathered with for months.
If you would like to checkout more screens for the menus, etc - Kotaku has loads of them.

XBLA Wednesday 7/2: It's Soulcalibur Time
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 at 6:30 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Microsoft

Today’s Xbox Live Arcade release is a serious mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s Soulcalibur, which they tell me is one of the greatest fighting games of all time. (I suck at every fighting game ever conceived, so I generally consider my opinion to be irrelevant when it comes to fighting games.) That certainly makes it one of the Dreamcast’s best games. And now it’s on Arcade. But… no widescreen support, no online mode, no mission mode; this is about as barebones as they could have made the game without stripping characters and the modes that did make it into the game.
One has to wonder if the size restraints played a role in what made it into the game. Contrary to early reports (which stemmed from an erroneous Xbox.com listing), the game doesn’t require a hard drive to play. But one has to wonder if this release is just a publicity stunt to get people’s minds on Soulcalibur for the release of the fourth game. It’s nice to think about the possibility of Namco Bandai perhaps releasing expansion packs for the game, but that simultaneously sounds unlikely and pricey.
So what do you think? Is the game worth 800 MS points ($10) in spite of all this?
Xbox Live Arcade Gets Soulcalibur on Wednesday for $10, Plus Wits & Wagers DLC
Posted by Chris on Monday, June 30th, 2008 at 1:59 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Microsoft

Only one new game will be releasing this week on Xbox Live Arcade, but we already know it’s going to be a great one. Soulcalibur will be released this Wednesday for just 800 Microsoft points ($10), complete with achievements, 19 characters, and an absurd number of leaderboards. There will be sixty leaderboards in total, spanning the different characters and game modes — it almost seems like too much, but I’m sure the hardcore fan will love it.
Wits & Wagers will get its first post-release downloadable content on Wednesday. A question pack containing 280 new questions will be released for 320 Microsoft points ($4), which seems like a pretty fair price for that number of questions. I haven’t even made it through the initial batch of questions, though, so I won’t bother with this for the time being, although it makes me wonder how things will work online if I try to play with someone who has purchased the DLC. Fragmenting the community of players on a small Xbox Live Arcade game isn’t a good idea, and I don’t think people who purchase the DLC will be pleased if they go online and end up in a game where they can’t use it.
Soul Calibur for the XBLA Gets a New Trailer
Posted by Jonathan on Thursday, June 26th, 2008 at 5:57 pm under Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Videos
It’s nice to game companies giving us what we really want on the XBLA and PSN: namely, the same old classics we love with some new features and online modes. Take the upcoming re-release of Soul Calibur on the XBLA. All it’ll take is some online multiplayer, and I’ll be throwing down my MS points without a second thought. Besides, as this new trailer shows, the game still looks as fun and sharp as ever, despite the lack of widescreen dimensions.
Limited Edition Soul Calibur IV Fighting Stick Up for Pre-order
Posted by Stephany on Thursday, June 26th, 2008 at 11:40 am under Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry, Hardware, Sony
For those who like the Hori fighting stick and are also fans of Soul Calibur - you are in luck because right now Amazon is taking pre-orders for the “Limited Edition Soul Calibur IV PS3 Fighting Stick 3″. What a mouthful.
This limited edition peripheral will be released on June 24th and retails for $49.99, the same price as a Hoi’s other Fighting Stick, but if you want something that average Joe down the street won’t have, then the Soul Calibur IV Limited Edition one is the way to go - plus it will work with your other fighting games as well.

Rumor: God of War's Kratos Appearing in Soul Calibur IV?
Posted by Jonathan on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 8:35 pm under Game Consoles, Games, Sony
As if Vader and Yoda weren’t enough to get gamers excited about Soul Calibur IV, rumor now has it that Kratos from God of War may also be showing up in the game. Quartermann, EGM’s gossip guy, has heard rumblings that the infamous pasty-faced God-killer may be showing up exclusively for the PS3. That’s awesome by itself, but it also begs the question of what the Xbox 360 might get in return. Master Chief with an energy sword? Marcus Fenix using the Lancer’s chainsaw? I don’t know, but odds are it’ll be equal parts ridiculous and badass.

New Soul Calibur IV Screens Reveal Some Custom Faces
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, June 20th, 2008 at 3:24 pm under Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony
Namco Bandai has just released a batch of new screenshots for Soul Calibur IV showing off the wide range of possibilities for character customization in the game. You’ll have plenty of options for creating a unique character like “Cowgirl” and “Afro Maraca Dude” above. Players will also have the option of either tailoring an existing character’s look or building a new one completely. Of course though, those original characters will use an existing fighter’s moves.
You can check out the rest of the screenshots here.

Soul Calibur IV Box Art Revealed - Vader and Yoda Representing
Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 at 12:07 pm under Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry, Microsoft, Sony

The Box Art for Soul Calibur IV has been confirmed and we have it right here for you. I am sure that after looking at both screens that fanboys from both sides will start arguing over the huge difference between the two, but in all fairness you just cannot put Darth Vader on the cover of anything and expect it to be representative of anything pure and good. He is evil, and he is awesome.

Oberon's Ryan - Women Gamers Just as Competitive as Men
Posted by Shawn on Monday, June 9th, 2008 at 2:35 pm under Computer, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony
Oberon’s new COO Don Ryan has stepped right into the gender debate stating that in his opinion, there isn’t much difference between male and female gamers.
“My experience at MSN and Xbox Live is that women are as competitive if not more competitive than men, except that they just don’t want to spend or have the time or learn ‘up-down-X-X-Y-Y’…They don’t want to deal with that,” he told GamesIndustry.biz.
“You give them one button, they’ll kick your butt.”
I’ve actually seen this in action with my daughters. I nearly died laughing as my middle daughter beat the heck out of everyone using a single move on Soul Calibur 3.
Ryan is also looking to the next generation consoles as the next playground for casual titles. Although there are currently no Oberon games on the PlayStation Network or Wiiware, don’t be surprised to see them in the future.
“Ultimately, what you are going to see is the PS3, the Xbox 360…as the price curves comes down, you are going to see more and more casual content.”
The 1UP Show Takes a Stab at Ninja Gaiden II, Soul Calibur IV, and Penny Arcade Adventures
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 2:27 pm under Features, Gamer Life, Videos
Once again, Friday is bringing us a new episode of The 1UP Show, kicking off a brand new season for the series. This week, the gang takes on a barrage of top-tier releases with Ninja Gaiden II, Soul Calibur IV, and Penny Arcade Adventures. Naturally, Soul Calibur IV is the one that elicits the most excitement (before it’s all dashed against the rocks at first, that is). Apparently, some new gameplay elements are making this a very different Soul Calibur than past games. There’s also a heavy debate over whether Ninja Gaiden II’s non-revolutionary feel is due to the game’s difficulty or just poor design choices. Finally, there’s a discussion over the new Penny Arcade game, a generally good, but slightly flawed, title.
As always, you can download the new show using one of the links below:
New Soul Calibur IV Trailer Shows the "Secret Apprentice" in Action
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 1:01 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony, Videos
You may have heard by now that the upcoming Soul Calibur IV will be getting one more Star Wars character thrown into the action with “Starkiller,” the protagonist of the also-upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Of course, that means Namco Bandai has to unveil a new trailer for the game, complete with a brief, teasing segment about the new character. Luckily, Starkiller will be available in both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions; unlike Yoda and Vader, who are exclusive to different consoles. More importantly though, this means you’ll be able to actually have two Star Wars character fighting it out. I just hope this isn’t some indication that there’s a “Masters of Teras Kasi 2″ in the works. You can also check out some screens of this secret apprentice here.
Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice Joins Soul Calibur IV
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 12:55 am under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, LucasArts, Microsoft, Sony

You’ve probably heard of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and how it will feature the story of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, Starkiller. But it looks like that’s not the only place we’ll be seeing his disgruntled mug this year. Apparently, in addition to Yoda and Vader, Starkiller will be joining the cast of Soul Calibur IV. Unlike the other two Star Wars character though, Starkiller will thankfully be available in both versions. Somewhere, there’s a guy in an Ewok shirt working this new development into his fan fiction.

Street Fighter IV's Rufus Is the Second Creepiest Fighting Game Character Ever
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, May 30th, 2008 at 5:43 pm under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony, Videos

Capcom has released a new batch of screens for the upcoming Street Fighter IV that mostly show off one of the new characters, Rufus. At a glance, I already don’t like him for two reasons: the long, braided ponytail and the yellow jumpsuit with the plunging crotch that reveals some fuzz creeping up from his nether regions. It’s like Fat Bastard from Austin Powers fell into an 80’s hair band’s closet, but then let a Girl Scout do his hair. It’s kind of hard to feel awesome if you’re playing as him. On the flipside though, being beaten by this guy is sure to be humiliating to the loser.
You can check out more disturbing screens of Rufus and a few of El Fuerte here.
[Update: Can't believe I forgot to include this, but Handshakes figured it out in the comments: the award for "Creepiest Fighting Game Character Ever" would definitely go to Soul Calibur's Voldo.]
Voldo's Codpiece Frightens Me in New Soul Calibur IV Video
Posted by Stephany on Saturday, May 24th, 2008 at 12:27 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Microsoft, Sony, Videos
The newest video for Soul Calibur IV is titled “Hilde” and while it does indeed show Hilde and Raphael battling it out very cinematically, the part of it that kind of creeped me out more than anything was the fight scene between Sophia and Voldo. His whole demeanor not to mention his “outfit” is just flat out perverted. Granted, Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur titles have always been known to push the boundaries of “titillation” so to speak, but Voldo literally looks like he is hunching the air in this video and showing off his codpiece. Blech. I wonder if Sophia’s critical finishing move is to put clothes on Voldo, thus making his magical S&M gear obsolete and his death occurring because normal clothes suck his soul meter dry.
Soul Calibur IV is expected on to land on retail shelves on July 29th.
New Characters Revealed in Soul Calibur IV Screens
Posted by Jonathan on Friday, May 23rd, 2008 at 6:43 pm under Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony

Namco Bandai has unveiled a new batch of screenshots for Soul Calibur IV that reveal a couple new characters. First up is Ashlotte, a creepy-looking Queen of Hearts cosplayer with a heroin addiction (I’m guessing). Then there’s Shura, who wears a thong and a really low-cut shirt (bras are a thing of legend in the Soul Calibur universe). Finally, these screens also confirm the Setsuka and her deadly umbrella will be making an appearance. Call it a hunch, but I’m guessing this game’s going to have “breast physics”; and I hope to God that doesn’t involve Voldo.

Red Hulk Exclusive to Xbox 360 and GameStop
Posted by Jonathan on Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 at 3:45 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sega

I am really really not up on my Marvel lore it seems, since I had no idea until now that there’s a newer, redder Hulk stomping around these days. And so it looks like Microsoft is trying to sweeten the pot for their version of the upcoming game based on The Incredible Hulk by offering a red variant of Bruce Banner’s alter ego. Yes, for choosing the Xbox 360 version out of the others for PS3, PS2, PC, Wii, and DS, you can play as a Hulk with a different color scheme. You’ll also have to buy the game at GameStop to access this useless add-on. Sometimes these console-exclusive bonuses require some real thought, like DLC versus no DLC (GTA IV) or Yoda versus Vader (Soul Calibur IV). But a new skin that doesn’t look much different from the original? Not exactly something that’ll keep me up at night. You know, assuming I would ever seriously consider paying full price for a game based on a movie based on a comic.

New Details and Screens for Soul Calibur on the XBLA
Posted by Jonathan on Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at 4:35 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft

Namco Bandai announced that the original Soul Calibur would be making its way to the XBLA awhile back, but now they’ve revealed new details and a handful of screenshots. The game obviously isn’t as pretty as Soul Calibur IV is looking, but I’m sure the game is still plenty of fun to play. The XBLA version will feature slightly enhanced visuals as well as numerous leaderboards for all types of stats and characters. The game will also feature local versus modes, but sadly there has been no mention of any online play. That’s actually kind of a deal breaker for me, particularly with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix just around the corner. Regardless, the XBLA Soul Calibur is set to be released this summer, and you can check out some more screens for it here.

More Returning Characters Confirmed for Soul Calibur IV
Posted by Jonathan on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 3:14 pm under Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony

Namco Bandai has revealed a batch of new screenshots for Soul Calibur IV which confirm the presence of three returning fighters. In addition to the more infamous Yoda and Darth Vader, the cast will also include past favorite, Talim, Rock, and Yoshimitsu. Their different appearances though ahve changed quite a bit, with Talim looking like a gypsy pirate, Yoshimitsu looking like an alien samurai, and Rock donning the head of a rhino. I’m sure there’s a reason for these new styles, but the story’s for these games has never really been what draws me to them. You can check out more screens of the returning cast here.
The Hunkiest Heroes in Video Games - Too Bad There Aren't Enough of Them
Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 at 12:16 pm under Editor's Corner, Editorials, Features, Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games

Everybody who has ever played a video game can attest to the fact that the majority of the female characters in them are usually not horrid beasts whose appearance is so revolting that you want to gouge your eyes out. Usually, if a female character is insulting to our senses it is because they are either a zombie, some sort of enemy we are suppose to detest or they are the overly plump mother figure. The heroines, or the damsels in distress are usually pretty easy on the eyes – for a pixilated figure – and the fandom that surrounds Lara Croft, for example, can attest to this. For years on end, men have had their Dead or Alive chicks, Lara, the Final Fantasy babes, any female in Soul Calibur, and pretty much the whole gambit of scantily clad women in the RPG genre. This has always been okay with me, because I am not a prude and I understand that developers and the demographic that they cater too are mostly male. Men like to look at voluptuous women oozing with sexuality that can handle a broadsword with as much tender loving care as they would a helpless kitten. It is a scientific fact that men are stimulated visually when it comes to the opposite sex – therefore, if a game developer wants to include a female character in a game that wears nothing more than a thong, pasties, thigh-high boots and fishnet stockings – go for it! It does not offend me in the slightest.
I do however, have one request from developers: Why not make your main protagonists just as easy on the eyes as the women? I am not asking you to put them in a codpiece or have them in costumes that make them look like nothing more than a reject from a Village People casting call. I am not even asking for you to make them “really, really, ridiculously good-looking”. I just think it would be wonderful to have nice looking men who are just as easy on the eyes as their pixilated female counterparts. Handsome heroes in video games are few and far between and while Duke Nukem may be a bad ass, his resemblance to Howie Long only disgusts us to be quite honest. Solid Snake may be one of the most awesome heroes of his genre, but he is no Sam Elliot.
Because of the lack of hunky men in video games, I set out to find some that I personally though might fit the “handsome” mold. I shared my findings with some female friends who are also gamers, and they agreed with me on my selections. With more and more women taking up gaming as a hobby, if you are going to include a hot chick, make her counterpart just as hot. I have picked some of the hunkiest gaming heroes that have so far graced our TV screens, and while there are not that many, the ones I have chosen – to me anyway – are the ones who are easiest on the eyes.
