Silent Hill: Homecoming - Screens for Both PS3 and 360, and Two Nice Trailers
Posted by Stephany on Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 10:09 am under Videos, Gamer Life, Sony, Microsoft, Games, Game Consoles, Game Companies
Konami is all over the place this morning, and the best thing I have seen so far are the assets they released for Silent Hill: Homecoming. Maybe I am just prejudiced because I like the whole horror genre better than anything else, or maybe it is just because Rock Revolution (the Wii Version) has left a horrible taste in my mouth.
What ever the case may be, here are some lovely screens for both of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions and two trailers featuring exploration and a cemetery where you encounter an evil demonic dog that looks as if it has been turned inside out.

The Xbox 360 screens and the exploration trailer are posted after the break.

The Most Entertaining Unlockable Costumes For Video Games
Posted by Shawn on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 at 5:28 pm under Game Companies
One of the ways developers encourage gamers to replay single player games is to fill them with easter eggs and special rewards. Gamers can score all kinds of interesting little enhancements for finishing the game twice or playing on the ultra mind blowing difficulty level.
Game Informer has put together some of the most memorable unlockable costumes from popular video games. From the Cod of War to the tongue in cheek tribute to Sailor Moon, complete with cheesy transformation scene, from Silent Hill 3; developers have proved time and again they have a twisted sense of humor.
Check out the coolest and strangest costumes from Ghost Squad Wii, Devil May Cry 3 - Dante’s Awakening Special Edition, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill 3 & 4, Tomb Raider Legend, God of War, Dead Rising, Metroid and Bully. They’re all up for display on Game Informer.

Konami has announced that Silent Hill Origins for the PS2 shipped to retail stores in North America yesterday. Originally to be released in May, they pulled a fast one on us and never sent word that the date had been changed. Nice surprise though isn’t it?
Featuring enhanced visuals for the PS2, Silent Hill Origins tells the tale of Travis Grady, a lone truck driver making a routine delivery when he makes an unfortunate detour to the mysterious town of Silent Hill. Players must help Travis escape the city’s horrific inhabitants and unravel the mystery of the strange hallucinations from Travis’ past, visions that have plagued him since childhood. Throughout the game, Travis can use his fists, his wits and an array of weapons including a meat cleaver, pool cue and sledgehammer to fight his way through the nightmarish world of Silent Hill and face more than one possible ending.

New Dead Space Trailer & Release Date Revealed

Dead Space Trailer 3
Happy Halloween 2008! We now have official word from EA that Dead Space will hit shelves on Halloween this year.
The above trailer is new footage from Dead Space, a third-person sci-fi survival horror game. The title is currently being developed by EA Redwood Shores. It will be released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. I’ve been getting a little burnt out on the typical survival horror games lately, so perhaps adding a space scenery to the game will be enough to make it original. From what I have seen so far, the game certainly looks interesting.
Developers of the game claim to have gotten their inspiration from Event Horizon, Alien, and The Thing, as well as from videogames like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series.

Rumor No Longer: Silent Hill Origins Coming to the PS2
Posted by Stephany on Friday, February 1st, 2008 at 12:36 pm under Gamer Life, Sony, Game Consoles, Games, Game Companies
Around the middle of January, I posted Amazon and Gamefly listings for Silent Hill Origins and everyone was curious as to whether this was just some sort of mass slip-up or if it was a legitimate listing. Today, we received confirmation from Konami that Silent Hill Origins is indeed coming to the PS2 in May.
Acting as a prequel to the popular horror series, Silent Hill Origins follows troubled truck driver, Travis Grady, who gets stuck in Silent Hill while making a routine delivery. He quickly discovers that all is not well in the fog-smothered town, and that its shrouded streets hide grotesque creatures and dark secrets. Moreover, as he explores the seemingly abandoned town, Grady is confronted by crippling memories from his troubled past and it becomes clear he must escape from this horrid town while resolving the memories that have plagued him since childhood. Cool! Nothing is scarier than a demented truck driver trapped in a town overrun with demonic creatures.
The PS2 version will of course offer a visually enhanced version of the PSP version, with elements that are new to the franchise and it also promised to provide the player with an enhanced sensation of isolation. Creepy! While retaining the cinematic experience of the previous games, it also has an intuitive ‘Cineractive System’ that allows players to face down horrifying monsters while the control scheme changes intuitively for each situation. Players also have an enhanced camera system that actively tracks Travis, and fans of the series can will be happy to know that the original soundtrack was composed by Akira Yamaoka.

Zero Punctuation Runs Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles off the Rails
Posted by Shawn on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 12:49 pm under Nintendo, Videos, Nintendo, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Game Companies
It’s Wednesday again; the day I look forward to a new episode of Yahtzee Crowshaw’s razor wit in Zero Punctuation. This week, Croshaw takes on the rail shooter Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. If you’ve seen his review of Silent Hill: Origins, you may have an inkling as to what to expect. This update of the classic rail shooter forcibly reminds us that “the good old days” weren’t always so good.

Dead Space Coming to PC; Downloadable Content in the Works; Sequel Planned
Posted by Shawn on Thursday, January 17th, 2008 at 2:43 pm under Sony, Electronic Arts, Valve, Half-Life, Microsoft, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Computer, Game Companies

EA told Eurogamer Germany that Dead Space is coming to the PC. Executive producer Glen Schofield also revealed that downloadable content for all three formats is also in the works, but plans for the title don’t stop there.
“I would definitely like to make future Dead Space games,” said Schofield, probably through Gordon the Gopher. “I’d love for this to become a well established franchise; we’ve created a huge and rich back story and universe, so other games could easily be made.”
EA is promising us the scariest survival horror game ever. Dead Space is ignoring the multiplayer shooter routine and concentrating on story and atmosphere taking liberal notes from Half-Life 2 for cut scenes and game mechanics. There will be no conventional HUD either to maximize immersion. Anther innovation is the use of gravity to solve puzzles and defeat bosses.
I’m a big fan of the Silent Hill series. I also really liked the innovative gameplay of Portal. Valve used gravity very effectively within the title. Somehow, I’m hoping if they could combine the two, it would be this game.
Dead Space is scheduled for launch this fall.

Silent Hill Origins PS2 Boxart Makes You Wonder
Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 at 6:48 am under Gamer Life, Portable, Sony, Games Industry, Sony, Games, Game Consoles, Game Companies
Is this legitimate or just a slip up of some sort? Who knows at this point, with Konami being silent as the grave and refusing to make an official comment either way regarding a PS2 port of Silent Hill Origins. However, this has not stopped Amazon or Gamefly from listing it on their websites with a posted release date of March.
Granted, the boxart pulled from either site looks legitimate enough, but until official word comes spewing forth from the mouths of Konami higher-ups - don’t get too excited like I did and knock your drink over onto your keyboard.
Stay tuned folks until we find out if this news is true or not, and until then, like the enigmatic Rev. Jessie Jackson always says “Keep Hope Alive!”

Yahtzee Croshaw Travels Through Silent Hill Origins
Posted by Jonathan on Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 at 2:02 pm under Sony, Portable, Gamer Life, Videos, Games
Ah, it’s another Zero Punctuation Wednesday, featuring another hilarious review from The Escapist’s Yahtzee Croshaw. This week, Yahtzee takes a trip to the creepiest town in gaming history in Silent Hill Origins. Since there’s about a good 80% or so chance of Yahtzee hating whatever game he’s reviewing, you can guess where a new Silent Hill game would fit in. He finds very little (i.e. nothing) good to say about the franchise’s latest foray into the PSP. Considering the series effectively peaked with number two, it may be time for the series to go through a major overhaul.

Please Make Me! I Am Legend: The Game
Posted by Jonathan on Monday, December 17th, 2007 at 11:27 am under Gamer Life, Features, Editorials, Videos, Games Industry, Games, Game Consoles, Game Platforms
Last night, I went to a midnight showing for the newest Will Smith movie, I Am Legend. The story, as you may already know, surrounds Robert Neville, the lone survivor of a viral outbreak that turns a large portion of the populace into night-dwelling deadly creatures (essentially zombies). This forces him to spend his nights barricaded in his home, and spend his days searching for supplies and the elusive cure to the virus. To review the film in a word…”awesomeawesomegoseeitrightnow” (plus you can catch the new Dark Knight trailer in non-YouTube form). But as I left the theater, I got to thinking about one thing: man, that would make for an awesome game.
These days, the few zombie-based games out there have more to do with heavy action. Dead Rising, the upcoming Left 4 Dead, and even Resident Evil 4 have their scares, but most of the gameplay revolves around shooting every zombie in your path. I Am Legend could put the “survival” back into “survival horror,” since that is what a good portion of the movie focuses on. Read the full article
Cute Silent Hill Papercraft
Posted by William on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 at 8:30 pm under Gamer Life
Kotaku discovered a very interesting papercraft project based on Silent Hill. This time, the project is basically a “blacky 3D paper fun model tribute to the foggy fog game, the second one, the one with the pillow”, according to the artist. This model looks extremely interesting and would be a great way for any gamer to spend a few minutes off the consoles and doing something constructive. Papercraft has always been around, but has really been hitting the video game scene only recently. Check out the original article with links to the project by clicking on the ‘Via” below.

Onimusha Movie Plot Unveiled, Filled with Spoilers
Posted by Chris on Thursday, November 8th, 2007 at 1:36 pm under Sony, Capcom, Game Consoles, Games, Game Platforms, Game Companies

Christopher Gans left behind the Silent Hill movie, but not the world of videogame movies, as he’s going to be working on the Onimusha film. He made the connection with Capcom by working on the Silent Hill movie, and now according to ComingSoon.net, work on Onimusha will begin in April 2008. The site has also got their hands on a plot synopsis for the movie, which you might not want to read if you want to go into the movie fresh.
In feudal Japan, 1582, the warlord Nobunaga is ambushed by ninjas, led by the brave samurai Samanosuke. Trapped, Nobunaga commits seppuku, but two sinister sorcerers reanimate Nobunaga’s corpse with a half-human insect larvae. The resurrected Nobunaga orders the capture of two very special women to fulfill his evil plans.
When Britta, the daughter of a Dutch merchant, is abducted on board a ship by seemingly invincible warriors, her tutor and confidant Jacob pursues her captors, vowing to rescue her at all costs. Meanwhile, the beautiful Princess Yuki is also kidnapped, this time by ninjas that reveal themselves, incredibly, to be part spider. In search of Yuki, Samanosuke joins forces with Jacob to vanquish their common foe. In the Cave of Elders, he receives a magical sword that will slay all within its reach-friend or foe-and learns of a sinister ceremony at Inabayama Castle intended to blot out the sun.
Performing a dangerous, stealthy invasion of the castle, Samanosuke and Jacob find the women they love dressed as Moon Princess and Daughter of the Sun, ready to be wed to and ravished by Nobunaga. Aided by their allies, the two warriors attack the insectoid hordes, but Samanosuke falls in battle, seemingly dead. In a mystical encounter, he is given the option to survive and fight-but it comes at a terrible cost…

Editorial: Exploring Familiar Monsters in Games
Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 8:39 am under Portable, Gamer Life, Nintendo, Sony, Editorials, Features, Sony, Nintendo, Games, Game Platforms, Computer, Game Consoles, Microsoft, Uncategorized
Halloween is here, and what better way to celebrate than by paying homage to some of the most notorious ghouls and monsters to grace our PCs and consoles? Without such cannon fodder as spiders, vampires and zombies we would be condemned to just shooting our fellow man, which although fun, would get old after a while. In compiling this list, I came across some notables worthy of an honorable mention, but who have yet to become mainstream enough to cross over into different genres, and instead continue to be pigeon holed within their niche. While this list is in no way a complete list of video game baddies, it is instead a list of some of the most common miscreants to get within our pistol sites or in the vicinity of our broadsword.
These distractions on our way to victory in our gaming universe are also not listed in order of importance or occurrence rate - because face it – one is just as annoying and evil as the other. Unfortunately, these monsters never get the glory that their bosses do, because they are nothing more than expendable minions set upon our paths to deplete our life force so that the main antagonist may continue with more important matters – World Domination. In truth, they become nothing more than something for you to enjoy chopping to bits or a vessel for extra health, magic, or cash, the poor, misguided fools. So without further ado, let me introduce you to the stars of this post.
Valve Says No Portal for Wii Planned
Posted by Steve on Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 at 5:35 am under Valve, Half-Life, Nintendo, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Game Companies
There have been rumors floating around the net that Valve’s most addictive component to Orange Box, Portal, will be coming to the Nintendo Wii console. Anxious gamers or tell-tale rumors? CVG took liberty to get to the bottom of this by firing off the question to Valve’s very own Doug Lombari. Here’s what Doug had to say regarding the matter:
“It’s an extremely interesting idea, but there’s nothing in product - not yet, anyway.”
So there you have it. The hearts of many Wii owners crushed by a single blow of the crowbar. Doesn’t seem like the Wii has been getting much love lately.
An interesting note to make here is that Portal -may- still be possible. So even a small glint of hope is hope, nonetheless.
It really would be a shame to not consider getting Portal on the Wii. While Orange Box would be a bit ambitious, Portal as a standalone product for Wii would seem reasonable. Sure it would get the Wii graphical dumb-down, but that’s not what Portal is all about. Portal on Wii would seem a perfect match: simple controls, sleek design, and addictive gameplay. Here’s hoping that Valve give it a second thought.

Wii Owners, No Silent Hill For You!
Posted by Steve on Saturday, October 20th, 2007 at 10:43 pm under Games

In a recent interview with long time Silent Hill Sound Designer, Akira Yamaoka, Wired News found opportunity to discuss with the master how he comes up with those spine-tingling sounds we have all come to loathe and love. Mr. Yamaoka sheds light on the history of his design process with the SH series, how the tools of the trade have changed, and more recently, how he pulls-off working with a UK-based development group almost half way around the world (apparently lots of emails). Yamaoka gives explanation why Silent Hill made it onto the PSP, as well as his confirmation that he will be working on Silent Hill 5 for “next-gen” consoles. Yamaoka also states why the 360 will be the most viable platform for Silent Hill, and, more interestingly, how 80% of Silent Hill sales are outside of Japan. The most interesting part of the interview was when the topic of Silent Hill for the Nintendo Wii was brought up. Here’s what went down:
WN: What is the future of the Silent Hill series?
AY: We’re making Silent Hill 5 for next-gen consoles. Are there any other platforms besides that? [laughter]
WN: There’s the Wii.
AY: Ah, the Wii. Wiiiiiiiiii… Silent Hill Wii. Can we do it? Will players like it?
WN: Yeah! There’s a lot of potential there, using the remote as a flashlight, or a knife…
AY: Yeah, there’s potential.
WN: But no plans.
AY: No plans. The Wii user isn’t a hardcore user.
So there you have it. Konami thinks the Wii is too “kiddie” for Silent Hill. Ahh well… that’s their loss, right?
