The developers of the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky have released this video showing some of the graphical features the game will be able to pull of with DirectX 10. As you can see, they’ve got some amazing stuff to show off. Dynamic smoke, enhanced rain and water effects, more dramatic lighting: it’s all pretty impressive. This new installment will act as a prequel to the first game, and it looks to be coming along very well from the looks of things.
GSC and Koch Media announced today thatS.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky GSC will ship to retail on August 29. The story of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky will put players one year prior to the events of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game in the year 2011.
Featuring improved AI, fast travel, a new weapons and armor upgrade and repair system, reworked HUD and PDA, and other neat stuff, Clear Sky will give fans and newcomers alike something to smile about.
The official announcement is posted after the jump.
Jonathan posted some cool new screens for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Skyyesterday, and Koch Media confirmed today that the game will be released in August. No exact date is given but for fans of Shadow of Chernobyl wanting to get their hands on the prequel can release a sigh of relief now that they have an actual window to base their lives upon. Be thankful that the release window of “sometime this year” has been narrowed down at least.

There’s a handful of new images up for the upcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky which shows mostly some mor eof the game’s dreary environment. This game will work as a prequel to the underappreciated FPS, explaining just how different aspects of “the Zone” came about. You’ll take on the role of a mercenary trying to work with the opposing factions and essentially bring about the events that led to the Zone’s state in the previous game. From the look of these screens, the area wasn’t exactly a pleasant place to begin with though. You can check out more screens for the game here.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an amalgamation of FPS, RPG and survival horror that features a massive world populated by characters that live their lives both on and off camera. Dmitriy Iassenev, lead programmer at GSC Game World, talked with AiGameDev.com about A-life and emergent AI in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.
A-life is a system used to create a living world where characters live their own lives and exist all the time, not only when the player is interacting with them. Iassenev explains that the A-life used in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a simplified version:
“The A-life system follows the player’s movements, and switches the characters to online/offline as necessary.”
The A-life system is used to create faction bases, stalkers by campfires, and similar features that give S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a more realistic feel. More traditional “scripting” is used along with the system for characters that are involved in key points of the storyline.
Whether you have an interest in getting into the games industry or just want to know how the developers do it, this is a great article on AI in videogames.
The prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl titled S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky will be launching simultaneously in retail outlets and as a digital exclusive on Steam and you can expect this to happen, well, sometime this year possibly. Release dates have ranged from Q1 2008 to January 2, 2009 depending on the source – so check back with us as more information on the release is forthcoming.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky brings the players one year prior to the events of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game in 2011. A group of stalkers has, for the first time, reached the very heart of the Zone-Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant-and brings about a cataclysm. Through narratives and combat action, players uncover new challenges and insights in the Exclusion Zone, along with a new version of the game engine, X-Ray 1.5, which promises to deliver superior graphical details to the game along with realistic and non-scripted combat AI.

Here’s a new trailer for the upcoming prequel to the hit action game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The game, titled “S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky” will take place one year before the events of the first installment, when the disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant had just occured and blowouts continued to shake the surrounding landscape. As a mercenary, you’ll get to see how the Zone originally came into creation and how it became the area it was by the events of the first game. There should also be some enhanced AI and new gameplay elements when this game hits shelves next year.
