Big Fat "Duh" of the Day: Capcom Says "Major RE5 Reveal at E3"

Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 at 7:16 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry

Since E3 is a rather important event, or used to be at least, it comes as no surprise to anyone that a game company would save its best reveal for an upcoming game for the lukewarm event.

Therefore, when Capcom announced that there would be a major reveal for Resident Evil 5 at next month’s E3, pardon me if I was not too blown away with shock and awe.

Speaking to VG247 this morning, a rep from Capcom stated:

“The next western world [media] drop will be to coincide with E3. We’ve got our press conference. At CAPTIVATE08 we told everyone that we would have some big things to reveal at E3. It’s our main game there.”

What this basically means is that unless something changes, or something is leaked, we will not see anymore “new” assets or receive any extra content updates until then. This is not too much of a shocker because at this time of the year (pre-E3), any sort of news on upcoming games is a bit dry.

However, all that being said - deep down I am a bit excited even if my cold, hard demeanor does not show it.

Ten PS3 Games to Make Your System Happy

Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 at 7:02 am under Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games, Sony

The Australian game site Gameplayer has listed ten PS3 games that should not only make your system happy for having the opportuity to play them, but they are ones for PS3 owners to look forward to as well. As someone who does not own a PS3, I have to admit that theses games do indeed make a great argument for loosening the purse strings a bit. Especially RE5, Little Big Planet and Rock Band.

Here is the list, see if you agree with their choices:

  1. Little Big Planet
  2. Killzone 2
  3. Resistance 2
  4. Resident Evil 5
  5. Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
  6. Pure
  7. PixelJunk Monsters Encore
  8. Guitar Hero: World Tour
  9. Rock Band
  10. Shiki-Tei

While these games are listed as “upcoming” over on their site, you have to take into consideration that Australia does not have Rock Band yet- poor fellas.

Resident Evil 5 to Delve More into Progenitor Virus' Africa Origins

Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 at 12:36 pm under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Videos

I had planned on posting this the other day but for some reason it did not take, therefore it may be a bit of old news for you, but here it is just in case.

Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi recently spoke with GameVideos and in the video interview he spoke about the Progenitor Virus and its impact on the plot of Capcom’s newest entry into the survival horror series.

“The main reason that we chose Africa as the setting for Resident Evil 5 is actually from a clue that came up in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, where it was revealed that Africa was the original of the Progenitor Virus, which is the origin of all the viruses that appear in the series. It’s been ten years since the events of Resident Evil. One little hint we can give you is that Chris is no longer a member of S.T.A.R.S. and S.T.A.R.S. itself as an organization is defunct. You might see a little mark on his arm that talks about the new organisation that he’s a member of - who that organization is and what they’re up to, that’s going to be another important element of the story.”

Takeucho also promises that RE5 will tie-up some loose ends regarding the fate of Umbrella Corp.

“Certainly that will be a very important part of the game, to answer some of those questions. In terms of timeline the game does take place shortly after Resident Evil 4 and over the course of the game you will find out exactly what happened to Umbrella and certainly where the story is going to go from here for the continuation of the series.”

I posted all of that info for you here if for some reason you are not old enough to pass through the age gate, or if you just did not want to watch the full interview.

Codemasters Invites Players to Celebrate Father's Day Together in Middle-earth

Codemasters Online are inviting fathers from across the globe to celebrate this year’s Father’s Day in virtual style by taking part in the Father’s Day celebrations set to take place across Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings Online.

Taking place on June 15th, Codemasters Online will be running a series of in-game Father’s Day events designed to celebrate this special occasion including father and sons fishing, music and fireworks as well as ad hoc competitions and challenges taking place throughout the day. Fathers are invited to attend these events with their sons and daughters and take part in the online festivities with the thousands of other players in Middle-earth.

“What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than spend it with your loved ones in the greatest fantasy world ever created?” said David Solari Vice President of Codemasters Online. “We invite fathers to come and enjoy the festivities that will we be running all day to mark this special occasion.”

I can’t really see me asking “the Deacon” if he would like to participate with me in some online gaming for Father’s Day. He thinks that stuff is evil incarnate along with drinking, smoking and cursing. Strange coming from a former biker who loved going to Bike Week and the like, but I digress. The celebrations are open to both existing and new players to LotRO, and new players can download the 14-day free trial to take part in the day’s festivities by clicking here.

Considering the fact that you can adopt other players as your children in LotRO, male players (or characters) may want to bask in the fatherly love of this special day by taking their adopted child fishing or maybe take them along on a good old-fashioned Giant slaughter-fest in Evendim. Or if Orcs are more your cup of tea, Dol Dinen is a great place to chop some of those ugly bastards up. If you happen to be in the area, look me up because I am finding it rather hard to get people to do the “Master of the Black Tide” quest with me.

Yahoo Lists Six Films That Would Make Great Games

Posted by Stephany on Saturday, June 7th, 2008 at 3:33 pm under Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games

shaun-of-the-dead-2.jpg

We have touched on the topic of what movies would make great games before here at Gaming Today, and so have other sites I am sure. However today, I came across this interesting post on Yahoo where Ben Silverman lists six films that he feels would make great games and lists ones that get as close to his choice as possible. I have listed the flicks below along with my two cents on each choice, which I just know that all of you are looking forward to more than anything else.

  • Children of Men: While I agree 100% that Alfonso Cuaron’s awesome sci-fi novel would make a great game, I would prefer that it would be based off the book instead of the boring movie. Yes, Clive Owen made it very watchable because he is indeed the stuff women’s fantasies are made of (and not a bad actor either) - but the film was just dry and lacking in every way shape or form. The movie just did not draw you in emotionally to the plight of humanity nor did you care what happened to the characters. Unlike the book, this movie was as dry as burnt toast.

Closest Match: Half-Life 2

  • 28 Days/Weeks Later: Silverman calling the Resident Evil games nothing more than titles filled with brain dead zombies from the “Thriller” video is just a testament to the fact that he has either: a) not played one of these titles since the first in the franchise, or b) has never played one at all. To suggest that either of the 28 days films would give a bit of intelligence to the zombie game market is a bit of a stretch because the zombie theme has been done to death - which is probably one of the reasons that the Capcom is moving away from it with the more recent RE games. Gamers are a fickle bunch when it comes to the RE series -on the one hand they complain that they are sick of zombies, and then when Capcom decides to release another RE4-type game a la RE5 - they complain that they need to get back to zombies. So which is it do you want? Make up your minds!! If I were to make a game based on a “zombie” movie I would have to pick “Shaun of the Dead” like one of our previous writers, William, suggested. Not only would it be an “intelligent” choice like Silverman suggests we need, but it would also bring in some much needed fresh-air to the whole zombie genre.

Closest Match: Left 4 Dead (slated for a November release)

  • Kill Bill Vol 1-2: This movie being made into a videogame was mentioned in a previous post but for the life of me I cannot find it. I agree though, it would make a fun game.

Closest Match: WET (slated for a December release)

  • Master and Commander: Far Side of the World:- Not sure if a gritty, realistic and scurvy laden flick (although a great novel) would be such a huge hit. Maybe if it were an RTS title yes, but as an adventure game - personally I do not think so.

Closest Match: Sid Meier’s Pirates!

  • Memento: I am still confused over this movie and playing a videogame based on it would just make my brain implode. Ok, I jest. I liked the movie, it was interesting and very ambitious but I am not sure how a game based on leaving yourself notes and tattooing clues on your body would go over with gamers under the age of 30.

Closest Match: Indigo Prophecy

  • Seven Samurai: No kidding. Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 film was a masterpiece of epic proportions. It would make a fabulous game, and might actually bring life back to games that feature the true samurai not the over the top comical ones like we see in games today.
  • Closest Match: Dynasty Warriors 6 (which was very meh in my opinion)

PlayStation Store 6/5: Qore Episode 1, Commando 3, and Novastrike

Posted by Chris on Thursday, June 5th, 2008 at 7:44 pm under Activision, Battlefield, Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Sony, Sony

qore.jpgBig update this week on the PlayStation Store. Normally, downloadable games would be the big deal, but with the first episode of Qore being released, that’s the real story. The new interactive video exploring all things PlayStation carries a price of $3, or $25 for a year-long subscription, and will hopefully provide more content than PS3 owners are used to getting. Otherwise, Sony can expect a backlash if the freebies become fewer in number.

We reported on the other big PSN releases already; Commando 3, Novastrike, Guitar Hero III’s God of War track and the Motorhead track pack, new Rock Band tracks, demos of NASCAR 09, Civilization Revolution, and Battlefield: Bad Company’s multiplayer… you’re not going to find it difficult to fill up your hard drives this week.

Rumor Squashed: Resident Evil 5 NOT Coming to the PC

Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 at 10:30 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry, Microsoft, Sony

resident evil 5A rumor, due to a not so cryptic statement made by Keiji Inafune of Capcom is swimming through cyberspace this morning. This rumor stems from an interview on the UK gaming site Spong where Inafune stated:

“As for Resident Evil 5, all we’ve done is shown the trailer and we’ve been instructed not to say anything more to anybody. Not just you press guys … anyone. Other than it is scheduled for release next year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.”

Sounds pretty cut and dry doesn’t it? Well, not really. Destructoid contacted Capcom to confirm this statement and this is what they were told:

“Nope, it has only been announced for PS3 and Xbox 360. Our UK office will be following up with Spong [who did the interview] to have this corrected.”

So there ya have it. No Resident Evil 5 for the PC - at least at launch.

Resident Evil Genesis for Mobile Phones

Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 at 10:49 am under Capcom, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Videos

GameVideos has a new Resident Evil trailer up for your viewing pleasure. It is for the new Resident Evil Genesis game for cell phones, which as much as I love the RE games I will be passing on. While it is indeed fun to play Tetris on your mobile when waiting in the doctor’s office, I just can’t see playing anything that would involve putting any time into on a phone.

OH MY GAWD!!! Resident Evil 5 Trailer is the Best Thing I Have Seen All Year

Posted by Stephany on Saturday, May 31st, 2008 at 11:09 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Videos

When clicking the “play” tab on the new video from Resident Evil 5, I had the best intentions of putting my sycophantic devotion to the series aside and tried with every once of restraint in my body to quell my unequivocal excitement for RE5 so that I could watch it with an unbiased eye. I was only kidding myself though, because within the first four seconds of the trailer I was getting as fevered as a prepubescent girl watching a High School Musical movie. Seriously, you think I jest? This video, is probably one of the best trailers I have seen so far this year and rarely do I watch one more than once - so far, I have watch it four times.

That is really all I can say about it, other than after this game comes out, Chris Redfield will most likely replace Leon Kennedy as my biggest “RE hero”. You better watch this trailer now, because once it is released to us via FileFront, it will have an age gate attached. Then again, has that ever really stopped you from watching one before?

Resident Evil 5 - Two New Direct Feed Screens from Capcom

Posted by Stephany on Wednesday, May 28th, 2008 at 10:57 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games

resident evil 5

Ubidays is not the only even happening today, because Capcom has their own called CAPTIVATE08, and the US press event will be a pretty happening place later on. To kick things off, Capcom has release two new screens for Resident Evil 5 and hopefully by the end of the day an actual release date other than March ‘09 will be revealed along with other goodies regarding the game.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that the event will be all about Street Fighter IV though but lets keep our fingers crossed anyway.

Resident Evil is Capcom's Top-Selling Series of All Time

Posted by Chris on Sunday, May 25th, 2008 at 10:45 pm under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Sony, Sony

resident-evil1.jpg

With 50 titles released in the series, Resident Evil clocks in as the best selling series in Capcom’s history, with 34.5 million copies sold. That’s followed by Mega Man with 120(!) titles selling 28 million copies, and Street Fighter rounding out the top three with 25 million.

These numbers come from the Japanese publisher a month prior to the company’s 25th anniversary, which it will celebrate next month. They revealed the sales for the 14 Capcom series which have gone platinum, as well as the 46 individual games which have gone platinum for the company.

Here’s a look at the top of the list; you can find the rest at Next-Gen.

  1. Street Fighter II (released June 1992, SFC, 6,300,000 units sold)
  2. Resident Evil 2 (January 1998, PS, 4,960,000)
  3. Street Fighter II Turbo (July 1993, SFC, 4,100,000)
  4. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (September 1999, PS, 3,500,000)
  5. Resident Evil (March 1996, PS, 2,750,000)
  6. Dino Crisis (July 1999, PS, 2,400,000)
  7. Devil May Cry 4 (January 2008, PS3, Xbox 360, 2,300,000)
  8. Devil May Cry (August 2001, PS2, 2,160,000)
  9. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (February 2007, PSP, 2,150,000)
  10. Onimusha: Warlords (January 2001, PS2, 2,020,000)

Capcom Predicts that Resident Evil 5 Will Rake in 2.3 Million Globally for the Year after it releases in March '09

Posted by Stephany on Saturday, May 24th, 2008 at 3:51 pm under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games

re5According to a post over on Kotaku, Capcom is predicting major sales for Resident Evil 5. How major? 2.3 million in global sales for the year. What?

Keep in mind, Resident Evil 4 was released in on the GameCube in 2005 and by January 2006 the Nintendo version along with the PS2 port had shipped over 3 million units worldwide. By January 2007, the PS2 sold over 2 million units, the GC version 1.6 million thus bringing the total to 3.6 million units worldwide - which is not too shabby.

Add to these numbers the Wii port which sold over 1, 250, 000 million copies (I cannot for the life of me find figures for the PC version) and you have a grand total of over 4.8 million units sold since the game debuted in 2005. Therefore, if the Wii version of RE4 can sell over 1.25 million units within approximately a year what makes them think that RE5 would only bring in 2.3 million?

The Resident Evil franchise has sold over 34 million copies worldwide and as highly anticipated as this outing is, especially since the great reception the last one received, Capcom should really be expecting much higher sales for RE5. Maybe they are just being humble or extremely conservative.

Resdient Evil 5 Details Surface - Get Pulled - Then Surface Again

Posted by Stephany on Friday, May 23rd, 2008 at 9:31 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games

resident evil 5

The UK magazine Xbox World 360 and GamesRadar (which seems to be a dead link now) has reveled some really interesting news about the upcoming Resident Evil 5. Apparently, the female character that we saw in recent screenshots will be AI controlled when you are in solo mode, BUT if you happen to take the game online anyone can take over her character and play some sweet zombie hacking co-op along side of you. Awesome.

Other little interesting tidbits:

  • The game takes place in an Africa country located near (which we already pretty much figured) Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya where volcanic activity has unleashed a virus upon the inhabitants. The game is basically taking the players back to where mankind began, which is why Africa was chosen as the location (which is not the first time a RE game has had African connections).
  • Sherry Birkin and Albert Wesker have been confirmed along with playable flashbacks to fill in the backstory and tie-up some loose ends.
  • The “Mercenaries” mini-game from RE4 is back and includes a few more features and while there still is no strafing, a cover system has been put into place so that you can press against walls and shoot around corners as well as dodge and duck using the right analog stick.

I honestly cannot wait for RE5 and while March 2009 feels like it is ages away, at least we have a new video to look forward to on May 30th when supposedly Famitsu will be giving it the world premiere treatment.

Resident Evil and DMC Help Capcom Profits Rise 33%

Posted by Chris on Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 at 11:50 am under Capcom, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games Industry, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony

resident-evil.jpg

Japanese developer Capcom has revealed its financial results for fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31, 2008. Things are looking good for the Resident Evil developer, as they reportedly had a 33.4% increase in profits to JPY 7.8 billion, with sales up 11.5% to JPY 83 billion, according to GI.biz.

Resident Evil 4, Umbrella Chronicles and Devil May Cry 4 can all be attributed with the strong success of the company overall. Operating income on home videogame units rose 44.1%, which was important, as not everything performed nearly as well.

Capcom’s arcade operations didn’t fair nearly as well as the home videogame scene, with a 62.5% drop in operating income, while the Arcade Game Sales division saw its operating income drop 13.7%.

“There were several factors that negatively affected performance: the dissemination of home video game machines, intensified competition, declining popularity of card dispensing games for children, and the decrease of visitors to those arcades located in suburban shopping malls due to rising gasoline/petrol prices,” said the company.

On the bright side, the upcoming financial year for the company is expected to yield record results, so Capcom has to be pleased with where they stand.

Dead Space Producer Interview and Gameplay Footage

Posted by Jonathan on Tuesday, May 20th, 2008 at 9:34 am under Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Microsoft, Sony, Videos

There’s a new video out showing an interview with the producer for Dead Space, Glen Schofield. In it, he discusses the development team’s goals for the game and how they went about crafting such an immersive experience. What I find more interesting though is the gameplay footage that’s also displayed, since it finally shows the game in action. It looks a lot like a more brutal, sci-fi version of Resident Evil 4, and I consider that a very good thing. This game’s at least looks different from the other legions of “space station taken over by mysterious creatures” games.

Resident Evil 5 Artwork and Screens

Another post containing artwork and screens for a highly anticipated game. Who would have thunk that such a thing could happen twice in one day. If you are a gaming journalist, you know what I am talking about - if not, just enjoy the awesome screens from what is promising to be a killer new chapter in the Resident Evil series.

According to NeoGAF, who translated the beautiful Japanese language they read via Famitsu, here is what you can expect from the game and in the way of future asset releases:

  • A new trailer will be shown in the very near future
  • There’s a new female character
  • In addition to areas that make use of sunlight as a gameplay dynamic, there will be darker, shadow-filled areas as well, such as a cavern where Chris utilizes a flashlight. There will be an intense contrast between light and dark
  • A knife, sniper rifle and the handgun are the only confirmed weapons at this point
  • Chris will be up against very powerful enemies once again, and this shot of some creature behind iron bars is reminiscent of Chris’s previous enemies, such as CODE: Veronica’s Nosferatu

If you look at the one screen very closely, you can see what looks like Noseratu behind bars. Looks like we will have to wait for the Resident Evil 5 video to come out, which will hopefully show more of what to expect. I am just hoping that the blond gal Chris is “holding” in that one screen is not Ashley or another damsel in distress.

The Hunkiest Heroes in Video Games - Too Bad There Aren't Enough of Them

Posted by Stephany on Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 at 12:16 pm under Editor's Corner, Editorials, Features, Game Companies, Gamer Life, Games

zoolander

Everybody who has ever played a video game can attest to the fact that the majority of the female characters in them are usually not horrid beasts whose appearance is so revolting that you want to gouge your eyes out. Usually, if a female character is insulting to our senses it is because they are either a zombie, some sort of enemy we are suppose to detest or they are the overly plump mother figure. The heroines, or the damsels in distress are usually pretty easy on the eyes – for a pixilated figure – and the fandom that surrounds Lara Croft, for example, can attest to this. For years on end, men have had their Dead or Alive chicks, Lara, the Final Fantasy babes, any female in Soul Calibur, and pretty much the whole gambit of scantily clad women in the RPG genre. This has always been okay with me, because I am not a prude and I understand that developers and the demographic that they cater too are mostly male. Men like to look at voluptuous women oozing with sexuality that can handle a broadsword with as much tender loving care as they would a helpless kitten. It is a scientific fact that men are stimulated visually when it comes to the opposite sex – therefore, if a game developer wants to include a female character in a game that wears nothing more than a thong, pasties, thigh-high boots and fishnet stockings – go for it! It does not offend me in the slightest.

I do however, have one request from developers: Why not make your main protagonists just as easy on the eyes as the women? I am not asking you to put them in a codpiece or have them in costumes that make them look like nothing more than a reject from a Village People casting call. I am not even asking for you to make them “really, really, ridiculously good-looking”. I just think it would be wonderful to have nice looking men who are just as easy on the eyes as their pixilated female counterparts. Handsome heroes in video games are few and far between and while Duke Nukem may be a bad ass, his resemblance to Howie Long only disgusts us to be quite honest. Solid Snake may be one of the most awesome heroes of his genre, but he is no Sam Elliot.

Because of the lack of hunky men in video games, I set out to find some that I personally though might fit the “handsome” mold. I shared my findings with some female friends who are also gamers, and they agreed with me on my selections. With more and more women taking up gaming as a hobby, if you are going to include a hot chick, make her counterpart just as hot. I have picked some of the hunkiest gaming heroes that have so far graced our TV screens, and while there are not that many, the ones I have chosen – to me anyway – are the ones who are easiest on the eyes.

My List of Female Role Models in Video Games

Posted by Stephany on Monday, April 28th, 2008 at 10:59 am under Editor's Corner, Editorials, Gamer Life, Games

wonder woman

Earlier in the month, Jenni Lada over on Gamertell listed eight great video game role models for women. Jenni’s main focus was on the RPG genre, and while I thought her list was fantastic I thought it would be great to compile a more comprehensive list that would span all gaming genres. Not knocking her post in anyway, I promise - it actually inspired what I set out to do with my own. So a hearty thanks goes out to Jenni for inspiring me.

Lara Croft and Samus Aran, in my opinion are overly exalted in gamer’s eyes and many other female gaming characters could and should be considered better role models than some. Usually female characters in games can be put into the same category of those Dead or Alive girls - of course, they are not meant to be role-models but are instead the video game equivalent of soft-core porn. What I would like draw attention to, are the unheralded female heroines that grace our PCs and consoles that seem to always get the short end of the stick when it comes to being adulated by the gaming masses.

Here, in my opinion are great female role models in gaming and while this list omits many that should get the acknowledgement they deserve, they can’t all be listed - so if you feel I omitted anyone, please feel free to mention said “wonder woman” in the comments section.
