Man Hacks Chrono Trigger for Marriage Proposal

It seems like every other week there’s a new story about a gamer proposing to their girlfriend through a video game. Usually this just involves a message spelled out using a built-in level editor, but “TheRealPfhreak” here gets bonus points for actually hacking a Super Nintendo classic and working his message into the full game. According to the future nerd-groom:

On October 17th, 2008, I proposed to my (now) Fiance. Originally I wanted to retun to the site of our first date, Mount Baker, near Bellingham Washington. Sadly, there was no discrete way to get her out there. So I turned to the next best thing, digitally recreating the mountain!

But why stop there? I figured I’d try and recreate many of our other favorite memories — stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics (from the Princess Bride). I’m a college student who is studying Computer Science, and I wanted to do something unique that used my talents, so I did some research on Rom hacking, as she was playing through Chrono Trigger.

Apparently, his girlfriend was convinced these were just bizarre coincidences right up until the part where her full name was displayed along with “Will you marry me?” She said “yes,” but only after noting that her husband-to-be was a “huge nerd.” The actual proposal is around the 6:20 mark if you want to skip straight to the key point. Okay, altogether now: Awwwwwwwww.

1339257745 a089fd9b8a The Week in Demos and Patches: June 15 21

While looking over the sad state of the demos list this week, I came to the realization that most game companies did not release a demo this week because they knew that the Spore Creature Creator demo would kill any chance they might have of getting thousands of gamers to download one of theirs. Of course, I could be wrong, but that would not be the first time one of my assumptions did not pan out, nor the second, twentieth, nor even the 300th.

Anyway, without further ado, here is the glorious list of demos for the week (the obvious included):

  • X Motor Racing: An updated demo for X Motor Racing has been released. This version includes one track (highway) and one car with some physics profiles.
  • Spore Creature Creator: The Spore Creature Creator gives fans the first hands-on opportunity to design their own species, share it with others, and imported them into the full retail version once released. This will allow you to play with the Spore creature creator and make your own critters, make a movie, upload it to youtube, take a snapshot an mail it to friends and eventually use it in the Spore game. This demo version is fully functional, but only contains 25% of the full version’s content. (MAC version)
  • CustomPlay Golf 2: A demo allowing you to try out CustomPlay Golf 2 with an all new editor plus a few resources and the ability to test your creation. With 7 playable holes of Chestnut Plains course, playable in offline and online modes and choose the course setup, weather and time of day.
  • French Street Racing: Once again you are challenged by the best of the best. This time you need to race throughout France to ensure your chance on the title. The showroom is filled with cars to meet your demands. Five hometown streetrace champions are looking for a new challenge, and founded the official “French Streetracing Competition”. The #1 street racers from Nice, Paris, Marseille, Toulouse and Lyon came together and set dates to race against each other in the hometown of each contender. Winner of all 5 cities becomes the official “French greatest streetracer of the year”. Being the sixth contender, are you ready to challenge these five experienced street racers? Can you defeat them in their own territory? The odds are against you, but perhaps you’ve got a chance.

G4’s ‘Princess Bride Game’ Interview

The Princess Bride

Fans of The Princess Bride can rejoice, because G4 has posted a new interview with developers of the upcoming Princess Bride downloadable game. We were highly curious about this game here at Gaming Today and now have some answers. It would be inconceivable that they screw up a game based on the highly loved film. According to the interview, some of the cast may actually have something to do with the development of this highly anticipated title. Things are looking good so far.

Example questions and answers from the interview are located below along with a link to G4’s exclusive article. I can only pray that they don’t screw this game up at all. I would climb the “Cliffs of Insanity” for a great Princess Bride game and I am sure many other gamers would too.

TheFeed: By far the most popular question from our readers about the Princess Bride game is a simple one: Could you describe the gameplay? Is it a collection of mini-games? A point-and-click adventure?

A casual, narrative adventure game (controlled via mouse and spacebar) with elements and influences such as cartoons, platformers, management systems, quests, puzzles, carnival and rhythm games, unique inventory system and lots of great characters and story.

In making a videogame version of a movie as beloved as The Princess Bride, you’re opening yourself up to a lot of criticism from fans of the film. People have a real emotional attachment to it… Will this game destroy people’s cherished childhood memories like other shlocky videogame versions of classics have in the past? If not, why not?

210px the princess bride first edition Princess Bride Game? As You WishWorldwide Biggies is bringing the 1987 film “The Princess Bride” out as a video game title in an exclusive deal with Act III Licensing.

The game is aimed at the casual market, expecially women who grew up with the film adaptation of the book by William Goldman which was in turn an abridgment of S. Morgenstern’s original political satire. Rob Reiner’s “The Princess Bride” film starred Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn and Wallace Shawn.

Worldwide Biggies CEO Albie Hecht said a teaser version of True Love and High Adventure — The Official Princess Bride Game will be packaged with the upcoming “The Princess Bride 20th Anniversary DVD.” The full game is set for release as an online download in the spring of 2008 though there are no plans for retail distribution at this time.

The article doesn’t mention whether any of the original film actors will return to voice parts for the game. Sadly Andre the Giant won’t be reprising his role as Fezzik. He passed away in 1993.

Super Mario Wedding Cake: Here-a Comes-a the Bride!

mariocake1 1 Super Mario Wedding Cake: Here a Comes a the Bride!

It’s a timeless story: two young nerds meet, fall in love, and prove their undying nerdiness and love for each other with a wedding theme inspired by their favorite pop culture reference. Some people go with the classic Star Wars theme, but this couple decided to break with tradition and offer up a Mario-style wedding cake. Even more amazing is that the cake was entirely edible except for the Princess and Mario figures on top. *Sniff* Sorry, I always cry at nerd weddings.
