Electronic Arts and Digital Illusions CE have put out a second “Live Action” video for Mirror’s Edge. In this case the video footage is live in the literal sense. The chase involves two stuntmen, or at least I’m assuming they would have to be to pull off the move these two do without major injuries.

DICE announced today that their first-person action adventure title, Mirror’s Edge have some downloadable content released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in late January. The PC version is expected to hit North America on January 13 and the rest of the globe on January 16, 2009.
The Time Trial Map Pack will challenge players to achieve the fastest times possible on nine races across seven all-new and totally redesigned Time Trial maps. No guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner. This special DLC pack will be available for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) and as an added bonus, all PS3 Mirror’s Edge fans will be able to download an additional map for free.
Says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer at DICE:
“We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic [with the map pack]that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game.”
“Time Trial” is a popular mode in Mirror’s Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

Like Portal before it, Mirror’s Edge is now getting the 2D treatment with a new Flash game now in beta. I suppose it makes a lot of sense actually, since the source material’s main feature was slick controls and acrobatics. Unlike the Flash version of Portal though, this game is officially sanctioned by EA, who are working with Borne Games to develop it. After a quick play through, I’d say this game definitely captures the same feel of the console Mirror’s Edge with it’s simple controls and smooth visuals. Actually, I’d say the game even controls better than the 3D version, since you never have to stop and look around for the next ledge to jump to.
You can give the Flash version of Mirror’s Edge a try here.

Zero Punctuation has returned yet again this week with a review for EA’s free-running video game experiment, Mirror’s Edge. The game has so far received mixed reviews from gaming enthusiasts who don’t relay their opinions through simple images synced to a voice over, so you can imagine how Yahtzee feels about it. There are plenty of flaws to be prodded in this game, from the disorienting first-person perspective to the unnecessary combat to the uninspiring story. As he points out though, the game was partly produced in the name of experimentation, which drives developers to create more engrossing experiences, so it’s not all bad. I just hope EA’s next experiment feels a little more satisfying.
UPDATE: The embed code for the video still doesn’t seem to be working so you’ll have to go here to watch the video.

On the surface, this may seem like all the previous trailers for Mirror’s Edge. Same music, same atmosphere, same shots of enemies being jump-kicked through plastic screens…wait, what? My memory may be off, but I don’t remember there being this many breakable surfaces in the Xbox 360 version of the game. It seems Dice wanted to give PC gamers a little something extra for their patience, since that version of the game still isn’t due out until January 2009. As such, they’ve added Nvidia’s PhysX engine to the mix, meaning there are sure to be even more impressive set pieces and fewer places for Faith to hide from the “Blues.”

For gamers who enjoyed the wacky fun of controlling nonsensically devout minion’s in the original Overlord were probably rejoicing when Codemasters announced back in August that the sequel, along with two other titles, would be released next year. Today though, you have even more reason to be pleased, because Rhianna Pratchett is returning to write the script for Overlord 2 along with two more titles Overlord: Dark Legend and Overlord: Minions.
Pratchett is currently up for an award from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain which will hold an awards ceremony on November 23 at BAFTA in London, England. She has been nominated twice in the category of Best Videogame Script for her work on the original Overlord and for her work with co-authors Tameem Antoniades and Andy Serkis for Heavenly Sword.
Besides working on Heavenly Sword, and the Overlord games, Pratchett also worked on SEGA’s Viking: Battle for Asgard, two unannounced projects and the upcoming Mirror’s Edge from DICE and Firefly’s Dungeon Hero. When asked about how she feels about her nomination and being asked to work on the next installment in the Overlord franchise, Pratchett has this to say:
“For a relatively new entertainment medium, it’s a sign of great progress that the industry is being recognized by the Writers’ Guild in this way. Writing for games is part alchemy, part narrative woodwork and part swimming in shark infested waters wearing ham pants, so it’s a real honor to be nominated for Overlord. The Overlord titles are fantastic creative projects and Triumph and Codemasters make a talented and supportive team who keep some of those sharks at bay. It’s a real pleasure to be back in the evil writing seat and taking the Overlord and the Minions to new lands and new adventures for the 2009 titles.”
With her competition being slim and the fact that she has been nominated in the same category twice, it would not be surprising if Pratchett walked home with such a coveted award next month. She is really starting to make a name for herself in the videogame industry, and we wish her all the best.
Overlord 2 will be made available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometimes next year, and so will Overlord: Dark Legend for the Wii, and Overlord: Minions for the DS.

EA has unveiled another animated trailer detailing the story behind Mirror’s Edge. This time, the video focuses on “Big Brother’s” rise to power in the futuristic world and reveals Faith’s motivation for fighting the government along the way. Apparently, her mother was killed during a protest when they were attacked by police, which is certainly one of the better reasons I’ve heard for having a beef with the government. I’m hoping the next story trailer involves a montage of Faith training to become a free runner, complete with 80’s pop music.

It looks like EA has finally announced a solid release date for their upcoming first-person, free-running extravaganza, Mirror’s Edge. The game will hit retailers in North America on November 11 and Europe on November 14. Mind you, that’s for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The PC version will ship “later in the winter,” which is industry speak for “you know, whenever we feel like it.” Luckily, EA also confirmed that a demo for the game will be available prior to the full game’s release. At any rate, you can chalk up one more game to anxiously await later this year (there seem to be a lot of those these days).

Looks like the specs released for DICE and Electronic Art’s upcoming first-person action title Mirror’s Edge will not force games to have to upgrade their system. Far from it actually because I would assume that most PC gamers have the following specs for their gaming rigs anyway:
- OS: Windows XP or Vista
- CPU: Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz / Athlon 64 2800+
- RAM: 1GB
- GFX card: GeForce 6 Series with 256MB VRAM or higher, or ATI X1650 (or HD2400)
In addition to this announcement, Sony has declared that the game, will have exclusive downloadable content for the PS3. Apparently, they signed a blood contract with EA for the PSN and while this is really no big shocker (all consoles do this) we are unsure whether the Xbox 360 and the PC will get their share of exclusive downloadable content as well. Hopefully soon we will have an idea of what this DLC contains and when exactly the game will be hitting shelves, so keep checking back with us.

All the votes are tallied for the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2008. Fallout 3 took two wins out of the three nominations it received including Best of Show. LittleBigPlanet was the only other game to win two categories and took Best Console Game. Here’s the official Game Critics Awards Winner’s Circle for 2008:

Interestingly enough only one of the winning games, Madden NFL 09 will make it to the Nintendo Wii or the DS. Far be it from me to suggest that it could have anything to do with Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata’s declaration that E3 is no longer the appropriate venue for core games.
