With Warner Bros' Library at their Disposal Traveller's Tales is Working on More LEGO Games

gaming today

If you cannot get enough of the LEGO games, and feel that Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the upcoming LEGO Batman are just not enough to tame your cravings - take heart! Traveller’s Tales are working on more LEGO games to pacify your future cravings for plastic blocks.

During an interview with Variety, Traveller’s Tales president Jon Burton stated that the UK-based company is working on future LEGO titles which will be derived from intellectual properties owned by its parent company, Warner Bros.

You may recall that late last year Warner Bros. purchased Traveller’s Tales for $200 million, and it is due to this new relationship that Brurton feels compelled to work on other personal projects other than games.

“For me personally, I think further in the future we’re making a kids’ TV show…using some of the tech we’ve developed for games. In the mid-distance, personally, to be able to dabble around in CG and film would be interesting, and Warner allows me to push in those directions without ‘quitting the day job,’ so to speak.

So for me, to look to the future and think, ‘I wouldn’t mind [doing a film]…’ And Warner allows me to take a step in that direction, and if I suck? Great, I’ll make games.”

Burton did not go into detail on which Warner Bros. IP he was currently working on, but with such a vast library of titles it could be just about anything.  Because of this, I have come up with some of my own ideas of what I believe would be interesting LEGO titles.

PlayStation Store 7/31: PixelJunk Eden and Three New Demos

Posted by Chris on Thursday, July 31st, 2008 at 4:48 pm under Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Madden, Sony, Sony

Gaming Today

The PlayStation Portable Store is a no-show this week, but there’s more than enough good stuff on the PS3 to make up for it. (Assuming you have a PS3, of course, otherwise you’ll just be left envious of those console-playing folks.)

PixelJunk Eden is the obvious highlight, making it the third PixelJunk game from Q-Games to be released on the PlayStation Network. Eden is a bit more abstract than the previous two games, which you could easily identify as a tower defense and racing game. $10 is the price for the full version of the game, or you can check out the demo that was released last week and read 1UP’s review.

LEGO Indiana Jones joins Madden 09 and FaceBreaker as the three new game demos this week. Madden’s demo is disappointingly short, letting you only play through the Madden IQ test and then a single trip down the field as you try to score a touchdown with the Giants in the closing moments of this year’s Super Bowl. It doesn’t really give you a great look at the game while the FaceBreaker demo does let you try out the create-a-player mode with your camera and play as many 90 second bouts as you wish.

Check out the full list of content after the break, including four new Rock Band tracks and some Soul Calibur music, which isn’t the slightest bit cheap.

June Software NPDs: Metal Gear Solid 4 Month, What a Surprise

Posted by Chris on Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pm under Activision, Battlefield, Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, LucasArts, Metal Gear, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Sony

Gaming TodayAs if the hardware numbers didn’t clue you, Metal Gear Solid 4 dominated the software charts for last month here in the United States. The game sold 774,600 units, but if you combine that number with how many Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundles were sold (which include a copy of the game), the NPD estimates that about a million copies of MGS4 were sold last month. I guess people really wanted to know whether or not Snake and Otacon would have that dreamy ending they’ve been wanting since the end of the original Metal Gear Solid.

There are a few other easy-to-predict things in the top ten, such as Guitar Hero On Tour selling quite a few copies, as did Wii Fit and Wii Play. Battlefield: Bad Company (on 360) and Ninja Gaiden 2 both had strong sales, as did Mario Kart Wii.

But the major surprise — aside from GTA IV’s disappearance — is just how well Lego Indiana Jones sold. With the new movie being released, it was assured a good number of sales, but the Wii, PS2 and DS versions of the game combined for 822,600 copies sold, or in other words, straight cash money.

Kris Pigna over at 1UP made a good point regarding On Tour, suggesting that the game’s sales may have been much higher if the DS bundles were included in the figures. It’s worth keeping in mind, but I’m sure Activision is happy with selling 400k copies of a game that will likely have legs.

June 2008 Software Sales

  1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) — 774,600 (Roughly 1 million including bundles)
  2. Guitar Hero On Tour (DS) — 422,300
  3. Ninja Gaiden II (Xbox 360) — 372,700
  4. Wii Fit (Wii) — 372,700
  5. Wii Play (Wii) - 359,100
  6. Battlefield: Bad Company (Xbox 360) — 346,800
  7. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) — 322,400
  8. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure (Wii) — 294,500
  9. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure (DS) — 267,800
  10. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure (PS2) — 260,300

Zero Punctuation Painfully Steps on Lego Indiana Jones

Posted by Jonathan on Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 at 11:36 am under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, LucasArts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Sony, Sony, Videos

Zero Punctuation is back again, this time with some fancy new opening graphics and a review of Lego Indiana Jones. Since the game “kid-ifies” the Indiana Jones trilogy and simultaneously acts as a reminder the The Crystal Skull, you can probably guess where Yahtzee’s opinion of this game lies. As always though, this review is dead-on and just plain hilarious. Also it’s nice to see I wasn’t the only one traumatized by the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was a kid.

New Lego Batman Trailer Shows Poison Ivy and Bruce Wayne in Action

Posted by Jonathan on Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 at 9:18 am under Computer, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Sony, Sony, Videos

Since I finished Lego Indiana Jones, I’ve actually been pretty psyched up for the next Lego-fied recreation from Traveller’s Tales, Lego Batman. I just can’t seem to get enough of little plastic guys beating each other into literal pieces. This newest trailer for the upcoming game shows off two more characters, Poison Ivy and Bruce Wayne, as they make their way around the block-based Gotham City. Here we get to see Poison Ivy’s amazing winking and hair flip moves, as well as Bruce Wayne’s briefcase attacks; plus his ability to bend time and space to fight alongside Batman.

(Note to all the other Batman fans out there: the anime shorts collection, “Batman: Gotham Knight,” hits store shelves today. Hopefully that’ll tide me over until The Dark Knight gets released.)

ChannelFlip has a new video review of LEGO Indiana Jones. Katharine, your host gives players a look at Lucas Arts attempt to recreate the wild popularity of the LEGO Star Wars titles.

The game features a storyline based on the first three movies without mentioning Nazism to keep the game family friendly. Without the fourth movie and very little content from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series; the game doesn’t have nearly as much background to work with as Star Wars. Katharine give gamers her opinion on whether LEGO Indiana Jones is worth the investment.

Better Late Than Never… Xbox 360 LEGO Indiana Jones Demo

Posted by Shawn on Sunday, June 29th, 2008 at 4:54 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Demos, Game Platforms, Games, LucasArts, Microsoft

Almost a month after Lucas Arts released LEGO Indiana Jones to retail stores, a demo for the game has surfaced on Xbox Live. Here are the specifics:

Demo: LEGO Indiana Jones
Content: LEGO Indiana Jones Demo
Price: Free
Availability: All Xbox LIVE regions
Dash Text: [ESRB: E10+ (Everyone 10+) CARTOON VIOLENCE] Download the demo.

I have to wonder why the demo was released so late or at all at this point. It begs the question of whether LEGO Indiana Jones is selling as well as Lucas Arts had hoped. Anyway, If you haven’t picked up the game yet, you can see if you like the game controls for the Xbox or whether you would rather try to master the Wii’s control system.

Former LucasArts Staff Reveal Details About Future Games — KOTOR 3, Anyone?

Posted by Chris on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 9:49 pm under Bioware, Computer, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, LucasArts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Star Wars

kotor.jpgYou know what they say about payback, and the now-official LucasArts layoffs has led to Kotaku getting all sorts of email from  former LucasArts staff revealing all kinda of details on future games — including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3.

The information claims that, with the layoffs, the company will be left shorthanded with all of the games they have in the works, which include KOTOR 3, which is apparently an MMO being worked on by BioWare, Star Wars Battlefront 3, “The Official Indiana Jones” game, “another LEGO game based on the Indy universe,” and “a lightsaber game for the wii (sorry, no lighsaber peripherals).”

Talk about juicy rumors.

The person also said that the layoffs shouldn’t impact The Force Unleashed or Fracture. The Force Unleashed has “passed approval with SCEA and is ready to ship,” while Fracture, on the other hand, is “an absolute piece of garbage.” Of course, I’d probably hate anything being made by the company that just fired me, so his or her word might not be the best to go on in that regard.

RUMOR: LucasArts Has Laid-off Between 75 and 100 Employees

Posted by Stephany on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at 10:25 am under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, LucasArts

lucasarts

According to reports, LucasArts has permanently laid-off up between 75 - 100 members of its internal staff and senior executives. Vice president of product development, Peter Hirschmann, was included in this mass axing according to a report on Kotaku.

This mass firing includes positions in arts and programming with staff from production services at LucasArts being outsourced to overseas positions. Some of the disgruntled staff members have supposedly let the cat out of the bag and went so far as to inform the public that even the producer of LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Star Wars, Shawn Storc, was also given the boot.

Seems like everyone is outsourcing jobs overseas and soon you will have to move out of the country to get a job unless you want to work a menial job that pays much less than you need. Maybe, but hopefully not.

No official comment has been given by LucasArts at this time, so take this as a rumor from a pissed off employee until we can find out for sure.

PlayStation Store 6/5: Qore Episode 1, Commando 3, and Novastrike

Posted by Chris on Thursday, June 5th, 2008 at 7:44 pm under Activision, Battlefield, Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Sony, Sony

qore.jpgBig update this week on the PlayStation Store. Normally, downloadable games would be the big deal, but with the first episode of Qore being released, that’s the real story. The new interactive video exploring all things PlayStation carries a price of $3, or $25 for a year-long subscription, and will hopefully provide more content than PS3 owners are used to getting. Otherwise, Sony can expect a backlash if the freebies become fewer in number.

We reported on the other big PSN releases already; Commando 3, Novastrike, Guitar Hero III’s God of War track and the Motorhead track pack, new Rock Band tracks, demos of NASCAR 09, Civilization Revolution, and Battlefield: Bad Company’s multiplayer… you’re not going to find it difficult to fill up your hard drives this week.

MyCheats has the complete step-by-step guide for you via the site or the trailer posted above. The process is somewhat simple: find all of the five Star Wars, characters hidden throughout the game, and then you can purchase Han Solo from Barnett College’s Library for the “bargain” price of 100,000 Lego studs.

LEGO Indiana Jones arrived in stores yesterday for every format imaginable and MyCheats has the guide to unlock Han Solo for each version posted, so hit their link for more info.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Coming to the Wii and DS

Posted by Stephany on Friday, May 30th, 2008 at 10:11 am under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry, LucasArts, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Star Wars

clone wars ds wiiThose of you who plan on picking up the new LEGO Indiana Jones game from LucasArts this coming Tuesday (June 3rd) will be in for a surprise when you check out the back of the booklet that comes with the game.

Ok, maybe not so much a surprise because I am telling you about it now, but you know what I mean - ANYWAY, an advert for Star Wars: Clone Wars is on the back of it.

The most surprising thing about Clone Wars for the DS and Wii is that it was never announced by LucasArts. I guess they can be really tight lipped when they want to be - that or the game is going to be sub-par which would never happen to any game bearing the illustrious Star Wars moniker.

I guess we will just have to wait until E3 to find out more, but at this point, I am just not very thrilled over the prospect of a Star Wars DS game. Why you ask? Because I just know that our evil lovely News Manager Ron will make me review it as his way of taking the piss.

Play LEGO Indiana Jones and Skip the Movie

Posted by Stephany on Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 1:28 pm under Computer, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, LucasArts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, Portable, Sony, Sony

lego indiana jones

This is just a friendly reminder to all of our readers that LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is coming out next week. Tuesday June 3rd to be exact, and while console users did not get to play a demo of the game, a version for the PC came out and all it did was make me want to buy the console version. Nothing against the PC, but LEGO games are just more fun and a bit easier to enjoy on a console - this is just my opinion though so use your own judgment. New screens for the game are posted after the break.

I do however have to say that I had more fun playing the PC demo than I did sitting through the movie. Has anyone else noticed that Harrison Ford always has the same facial expression and the same body language every time he is knocked back, falls, trips or gets punched in every single movie he stars in (sans Star Wars 4-6)? Just an observation - anyway, if there is one thing I can suggest its that you spend the 49.99 - 29.99 on whatever version you plan on purchasing LEGO Indy for than the 20 or so bucks you would on the movie. I promise you that an extra 30 or so bucks (depending on the version) will be well worth it. Plus it will save you from the major pain in the ass you get after watching “Legend of the Crystal Skull”.

*shaking her fists wildly*

Lucas and Speilberg….. You maniacs, you blew it up! Damn you… damn you all to Hell!

The Week in Demos and Patches: May 11-17

Posted by Stephany on Saturday, May 17th, 2008 at 10:05 am under Computer, Game Companies, Game Demos, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Patches

demos and patcheds

Another week has passed and that means I get to give you the regular list of wonderful demos and patches. Today, I cannot go much into the ins and outs of the week because I have to take my dog to his training class. Lately, he has not been minding very well and is chasing the cows and horses. Normally the fence would block the annoyance, but I would rather him learn to mind me than get kicked in the head. Plus, all he does is look at me like I am stark raving mad when I scold him. Damn dog.

Anyway, here is what hit FileFront in the way of demos this week, the most popular of which was the GRID demo with the one for LEGO Indiana Jones coming in second and Mount and Blade third.

  • Heresy War- Bear in mind that this is a product in development and what you are seeing is not final product quality. What is Heresy War? Heresy War is a combat space simulator set in a future where the humanity has reborn from the ashes after a catastrophic world war. The game puts the player in the cockpit of the most technologically advanced fighters in the human military fleet (The Core) as he witnesses the start of a civil war. Gameplay features for the final version: Mission-based , story-driven gameplay, Branching non-linear campaign based on player’s actions, Intuitive interface and controls, Complete freedom across all axes, Squadron command, Sequential capital ship destruction, Self-adjusting difficulty level, Arcade and simulation control
  • Battleship Chess - Combine the classic naval stategy game of Battleship with the thoughtful turn-based moves of Chess and you get Battleship Chess. Move your naval fleet of battleships, battlecruisers, destroyers and submarines in search of the enemy. Once spotted, let them have it with your guns, torpedoes and depth charges. Play this turn-based naval strategy game against computer or human opponents, online or at the same PC.
  • Larva Mortus - For both Windows and Mac. Rake in Grass has released a new demo for Lava Mortus, a top down shooter, offering fast and entertaining monster-hunting gameplay.
  • Supernova 2: Spacewar - For both Windows and Mac. Sci-fi strategy game featuring a main part mainly based on the macromanagement of your space empire, and a classical turn based wargame part when a fight occurs.
  • Virtual Villagers: Chapter 3 - For both Windows and Mac. Embark on a new journey with a group of villagers in search of a new part of the island to populate. Land on the hidden shores of the northern side of Isola and explore what was once a secret city.

Here are the patches that hit this week, and unless you were residing in a cave in the arctic someplace, you would know that the most popular with gamers was the new WoW patch. Other patches include: Mount and Blade, GH: III for Windows and Mac, Tarr Chronicles, and Lost Empire: Immortals amongst others.

As always, for the full list of demos click here, and for patches click here. See you next week.

No LEGO Indiana Jones Demo for Consoles

lego indiana jonesRecently, a demo for LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures was released for the PC and it left console owners hoping for a version to hit their systems soon. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is not going to happen.

According to Eurogamer, an Activision representative told the site that a console demo is not in the works or will there be one at all. So, if you are reading this, that means you have access to a PC, which means that you can still play a demo and that should give you an idea if you want it for your console, so try not to be so glum about it.

Indy's New Brick Home in Trailer for LEGO Indiana Jones

LEGO Indiana Jones Trailer #3

LucasArts has unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming LEGO Indiana Jones, which shows off a few of the gameplay features. Like the past LEGO Star Wars games, the brick-based environments will have you constructing and deconstructing all manner of in-game objects to solve puzzles and such. Of course, since there are no Force powers in Indy’s world, he’ll have to rely on his hands – and his fists — to get the job done. This time around, supporting characters will have more specific powers rather than just being cookie-cutter versions of each other. Look for this game to hit store shelves later this summer.
