l4d2 boxart Left 4 Dead 2 Pre order Incentives Include Early DemoOXM and Joystiq are revealing that the upcoming controversial sequel to Left 4 Dead will try and entice players who maybe aren’t quite as enthused about the quick turn around between last year’s initial release and this year’s Southern bound sequel with some nice demo shaped cookies..

It seems that the upcoming demo of the game will be available to players who pre-order the title before it hits general outlets. The details are sparse at the moment but this early access will likely be to the same content the rest of the world will get when the multiplayer demo hits Steam and Xbox Live, just a teensy bit earlier.

I understand Valve wanting to feed the L4D 2 hype, but as far as pre-order incentives go this one just seems to be a bit too lame duck to me. Offer an exclusive level or weapon or heck, maybe give us access to a member of the original game in our L4D 2 play, but giving out the same demo just earlier seems like an epic undersell of a much anticipated/debated sequel.

Left 4 Dead 2 – Five Minutes of Sunlit Gore

While the controversy regarding Left 4 Dead 2 continues to fester and fans and haters alike debate the merit of Valve’s choice to continue the series in a full game rather than as downloadable expansions or free updates, its still nice to watch the future of Zombie slaying, survivalist nightmares in action.

Earlier today gaming blog Kotaku posted a five minute preview segment of gameplay from Left 4 Dead. The footage includes the melee weapons in action, some new special infected footage and more suntanning zombies than you can shake a stick at.

I previously commented on why I think this was a bad move for the developer but I’ll likely be the first to admit I’m “jonesing” for some new L4D options, the original offerings are growing stale so like a zombie smack junkie.. well Valve you’ve got me on the hook for the next one as well if this video is any indication.

A Steamed Community Initiates Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott

L4D2 boycott

In wake of recent announcement that Valve would be releasing Left 4 Dead 2 this November, a small part of its community has responded with reception that would otherwise seem warm only to a zombie’s touch. The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott Steam Community Group is not only upset with the recent announcement of a L4D sequel, but they feel that, no thanks to Valve, they have literally been Left 4 Dead. The group is not only a representation of L4D fans willing to boycott the full-blown sequel come November, but it also serves as a movement to educate the masses and point out repercussions a timely sequel will have on the present day L4D community.

Glancing at their Steam Community page, the group’s leaders have even gone to the trouble of establishing a manifesto outlining major points in their global argument that having a L4D sequel right now is a bad idea. Major points in the manifesto that stick out are that the group are foremost believers in Valve’s dedication to improving its past and current products, that until L4D2 hits shelves judgment can not be made, and that L4D2 will essentially split the community. I’ve copied and pasted the entire manifesto at the tail of this article.

The Left 4 Dead 2 boycott movement is, as of today, 20,000+ and growing strong. They have sent their manifesto to Valve. They have established a moderated public forum from which anyone can voice their opinions (assuming you behave). While this particular editor (and fellow zombie annihilator) will not be joining their ranks, I do find their sincerity and professionalism quite refreshing. They are off to a good start and I wish them luck.

E3 2009: Left 4Dead2 Teaser Trailer

l4d2 boxart E3 2009: Left 4Dead2 Teaser TrailerGrab your chainsaws because Valve wowed gamers this morning with promises of more intense cooperative zombie killing in Left4Dead2. The sequel to the wildly popular FPS adds new survivors and zombie bosses as well as weather effects, but the addition I’m looking forward to is melee combat with improvised weapons. Players will be able to pick up baseball bats, frying pans, and chainsaws of course. Left4Dead2 promises to be a game you can really sink your axe into.

Of course L4D2 is a mature rated game so I’ve put the new video after the jump. Check out the Left4Dead2 E3 teaser trailer after the jump.

E3 2009: Left4Dead 2 Announced, Zombies Moan in Disappointment

800px left4dead promo E3 2009: Left4Dead 2 Announced, Zombies Moan in DisappointmentI’ll likely get hung for this post but I’m going to vent a bit anyway. Today during the Microsoft Press Conference at E3 2009 there was a reveal trailer for the next Left4Dead installment. Normally I’d be ecstatic about such an announcement, and initially I was – when I watched the trailer along with the Crackdown 2 teaser – but once the high faded a bit I realized how not OK I am with this whole sequel concept.

Left4Dead is less than a year old. It shipped with a very slight amount of content, only got added value with the later Survivor patch and is only now getting mod support from the community and rather than expand it and give us a more reasonably sized game.. we’re being fed a sequel.

More Zombie killing is a goal I subscribe to religiously. I love Left4Dead, I played the heck out of it for months until the 4 basic scenarios wore dry and even the injection of new content with the recent patch didn’t work to vary or sate that apathy much. The original gang isn’t done, I want more adventures, more maps and scenarios and frankly more value from that initial purchase – just as Valve promised.

The trailer and accompanying press release also worry me because the features they tout for the upcoming continuation don’t seem earthshaking or innovative, or like additions that don’t belong in a patch for the original game. What I’m referring to is the addition of more melee-centric weapons and combat, and an upgraded AI Director. Then there is this statement:

“Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.”

Who is responsible for L4D not having a great selection of content, modes or characters?

Well the same people who are now expecting us to shill out full price yet again to support their hype machine. I’m an ardent supporter of Valve over the years but this move really bugs me. We’re still waiting on Half-Life 2 Episode 3 to wrap that story up – 4 years later – and yet they can crank out another money grab in the form of an L4D sequel. Valve doesn’t patch or fix problems with the 360 version of the Orange Box, yet they can produce an entirely new L4D product? Something smells here and while the “freeness” of the Survivor patch is a great move in an industry increasingly based on selling you parts of their completed game after release as a continued revenue stream, I am afraid with the current information in hand I may have to change my position on Valve and its formerly consumer friendly posture.

The new title is scheduled to ship on November 17th for Xbox 360 and PC, just in time for the Christmas rush, and features an apparent Southern US setting and characters including “Inbred Tank” and a multi-ethnic survivor team. I’m sorry but I think I’m going to take a pass here.. until I see something that shows a sequel was needed to the game, and this is not just more than a simple tech upgrade with new maps and re-skinned characters. You can view the full details of the press release after the jump.

Survival Mode is a Great Addition to Left 4 Dead

left4dead1 300x168 Survival Mode is a Great Addition to Left 4 DeadLike so many other people, I was smitten with Valve’s zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead. There’s something viscerally satisfying about gunning down hordes of zombies, especially when you feel that you’re the last hope for the survival of humanity. Earlier this week, Valve graced us with the first major update for Left 4 Dead. This update included not only Versus mode for the two maps that were previously unavailable, it also included the long-awaited Survival Mode.

The basic premise is a simple one. The players are up against a wall, facing off against never ending waves of zombies, including a number of special infected. There are plenty of supplies, ammo, and explosives, but there’s absolutely no way out. The goal, as the name would suggest, is to survive as long as possible.

But does it actually work as a game mode?

Left 4 Dead Patched to Prevent Hacks

Well, easy come, easy go, hackers. After the news of hacking in the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead swept the internet, Valve apparently jumped right into finding a solution to the problem. Now they’ve announced the release of a server-side fix to stop the cheating from taking place. They also mentioned a similar title update in the next few days to prevent the same behavior in user-hosted servers and system link games.

So now you won’t have to worry about seeing a 12-story tall Francis in one of your games or having a literal pile of witches dropped on you. That is, until someone figures out a new way to cheat the system.

Left 4 Dead Patched to Relieve a Few Issues

800px left4dead promo Left 4 Dead Patched to Relieve a Few Issues

Valve has released a new patch for Left 4 Dead that should fix a few problems in the game. In all, the changes include:

  • Finding a dedicated server when starting the game from a lobby is now faster and more reliable
  • Versus mode is now locked to Normal difficulty
  • Difficulty on a server is now locked to the one set by the lobby reservation
  • Fixed lagouts/spikes after level transition
  • Fixed directory issue with spray logs in some cases
  • Fixed video settings not saving after closing video options dialog
  • Corrected a boomer suicide exploit
  • Several minor localization fixes
  • Fixed disabling cheats incorrectly resetting data

Apparently, that “boomer suicide exploit” involved people binding a key so that they could instantly make themselves explode without being shot (luckily, you can still jump off a building and burst all over hapless survivors). I don’t know why they would have locked the difficulty to Normal in versus, but at least now we can get into a dedicates server faster.

Left 4 Dead Stats Show Some Achievements Still Haven’t Been “Achieved”

left4deadachievement1 1 Left 4 Dead Stats Show Some Achievements Still Havent Been Achieved

Hey, you. Yeah, I’m talking to you. You think you can just sit around letting zombies wreak havoc all over Willamette? And if you’ve been zombified, you think you can just let survivors waltz in and out of their safe room without being incapacitated even once? That’s just not right.

Yes, it seems Valve has been using Steam to not only collect your PC specs but also monitor your achievement mongering. And the results show that people on the PC side of things just aren’t that big on collecting achievements, especially since there are two that not a single person has gotten at all. At least the stats show that most people are willing to help out their cohorts (unfortunately, they also show that most of you can’t “check your fire” very well either). Time to step up your zombie killing, people.

The Analog Gamer: Operation Impending Doom III

The Analog Gamer

I realize its been awhile since the last installment of The Analog Gamer and there have been a few big changes in the tabletop gaming market – Wiz Kids, one time golden goat of the plastic collectible miniature market has been shuttered by its parent company Topps, Wizards of the Coast announced it was making substantial changes to the D&D miniature product line and miniature company Rackham SA (producer of sci-fi battler AT-43) disappeared into the dust.

mjrottingcorpse The Analog Gamer: Operation Impending Doom IIIThings are tough all over but there is some hope on the horizon. Wizkids, the owners of the Shadowrun and Battletech intellectual properties recently signed a two year deal with Catalyst games to continue producing pen-and-paper titles in both series and apparently that will continue even after the death of Wizkids. Also there is a lot of interest from other miniature makers to acquire the HeroClix line and to continue the property at another corporation.

The refocusing of Wizards of the Coast on semi-random miniatures aimed at role playing gamers is a compromise tactic that will hopefully please both the hard core players/collectors of the miniature game and people like myself who are dedicated to the pen-and-paper RPG and prefer the ability to buy the minis we need for our campaigns rather than roll the dice and pray we don’t get too many random packs containing the Farmer and Pig mini or its equivalent.

Amongst all this doom and gloom however I find some respite in my love of the undead (I know that was an odd segue but stay with me…). The recent PC release of Valve’s Left4Dead has my gaming time filled with
hordes of the rampaging undead and with grim news impacting the tabletop hobby its hard not to feel a sense of dread. Read the full article
