The 1UP Show: Killzone 2, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Mortal Kombat vs. DC

By Stephany on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 at 10:28 AM
In Game Companies, Game Consoles, Gamer Life, Games, Games Industry

The newest 1Up Show is live and this week you will get a unique perspective on just how violent the offices are at 1UP.  Too many “bike” accidents apparently.

Ryan Scott, Shane Bettenhausen, and Richard Li discuss Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, and you can also watch Sam Kennedy and Nick Suttner chat about the things they liked most about Tomb Raider: Underworld–as well as some of the more frustrating aspects of the gameplay. Especially the “there for the sake of it” combat.

Towards the end you can check out David Ellis and Peter Brown’s experience with the Killzone 2 Multiplayer beta.

Due to Thanksgiving, there will not be a 1UP Show next week; however, you can still get a special LTTP segment via the iTunes feed and on the site where they will be talking about some of the games you may have forgotten about or missed out on due to all of  the “AAA” titles that took precedence during the past few months.

PlayStation Store 7/31: PixelJunk Eden and Three New Demos

The PlayStation Portable Store is a no-show this week, but there’s more than enough good stuff on the PS3 to make up for it. (Assuming you have a PS3, of course, otherwise you’ll just be left envious of those console-playing folks.)

PixelJunk Eden is the obvious highlight, making it the third PixelJunk game from Q-Games to be released on the PlayStation Network. Eden is a bit more abstract than the previous two games, which you could easily identify as a tower defense and racing game. $10 is the price for the full version of the game, or you can check out the demo that was released last week and read 1UP’s review.

LEGO Indiana Jones joins Madden 09 and FaceBreaker as the three new game demos this week. Madden’s demo is disappointingly short, letting you only play through the Madden IQ test and then a single trip down the field as you try to score a touchdown with the Giants in the closing moments of this year’s Super Bowl. It doesn’t really give you a great look at the game while the FaceBreaker demo does let you try out the create-a-player mode with your camera and play as many 90 second bouts as you wish.

Check out the full list of content after the break, including four new Rock Band tracks and some Soul Calibur music, which isn’t the slightest bit cheap.

PlayStation (Portable) Store 7/24: Parappa the Rapper is Back

Gaming Today

Owners of the original PlayStation will likely remember Parappa the Rapper and his crazy rhythm game that seemed like a bizarre concept back in the late 90s. I can still remember playing one of the seemingly hundreds of demos I got for the game and having fun but not really understanding what I was doing. He also made an appearance on the PS2 early in its life cycle, and the PSP got a port of the original game last year. You can now download that PSP game from the PlayStation Store, albeit for a pretty high price — it’s $23 for the 312MB download.

That seems like far too much for a game that’s only got a half dozen songs, but Best Buy is still selling it for $30. I like Parappa, but I think I’ll be scouring GameStop or eBay for a used copy before I drop $20+ on it.

The “Original” music game comes back for a PSP system encore! Join Parappa and learn how to flow from the “Rap Masters” to become a true Hip Hop Hero! PlayStation Store 7/24: Siren: Blood Curse, 1942, and Summer Sales

Survival horror finally has finally made an appearance on the PlayStation Store with yesterday’s release of Siren: Blood Curse. The Sony-developed episodic game can be bought in its entirety for $40, or you can buy the three episode packs (each including three episodes) for $15 each.

A small selection of downloadable games on PSN have been temporarily discounted as part of a summer game sale. PAIN, PixelJunk Monsters, High Velocity Bowling, High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition and Rocketmen: Axis of Evil have had their price cut in half, from $10 to $5, for just one week. $5 for PixelJunk Monsters is an absolute bargain, and most PAIN owners would probably say that $5 is what the price should have always been.

Hit the break for the full list of content, which includes 1942: Joint Strike, new Guitar Hero III and Rock Band tracks, and a demo of PixelJunk Eden.

Analyst: “Real” Xbox 360 Price Cut is Needed

xbox 360 price Analyst: Real Xbox 360 Price Cut is NeededWe all know that the 20GB Xbox 360’s price drop is just artificial — once those units sell through, it’ll be gone, and we’ll be back to the three current price points for the Arcade, Premium and Elite SKUs.

Todd Greenwald, an analyst with Signal Hill, has told investors that the “Xbox 360 needs a real price cut.” This temporary cut isn’t enough to stave off the fierce competition from the Wii and PlayStation 3.

“We remain very sceptical of Microsoft’s pricing strategy and competitive positioning versus the PlayStation 3.

“At USD 349, with a 60GB hard drive, we just don’t think it is a compelling product compared with the PS3 at USD 399 with an 80GB hard drive (along with more processing horsepower, Blu-ray, Wifi, HDMI, and going forward, more exclusive content),” Greenwald said.

“We’d also note that the Xbox 360 has just been surpassed by the Wii in the US, despite Microsoft’s one year head start over Nintendo.

“We do think that the Netflix announcement is a significant addition for Xbox users, though its far more of a positive for Netflix than it is for Microsoft in our opinion,” he said of one of the new features in the ‘new Xbox experience.’

“Sony’s biggest announcement was a strong counter-punch to Microsoft’s USD 50 price cut on the 360.

“We think this should give Sony a leg up versus the 360, along with several exclusive titles like the just-released Metal Gear Solid, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, etc.

“Beyond Gears of War 2, Microsoft doesn’t seem to have the same library of exclusive, must-have titles,” he concluded.

Greenwald makes a good point. If Microsoft could drop the price across the board and get the system under or equal to the price of the Wii at $250, it would be an extremely helpful selling point going into this holiday season.

The 1UP Show: E3 Predictions, Killzone 2, and STALKER: Clear Sky

stalker clear sky The 1UP Show: E3 Predictions, Killzone 2, and STALKER: Clear Sky

We’re just a few days away from this year’s E3, and while this week’s 1UP Show of course packs in plenty of E3 predictions, that’s not all there is. 1UP’s Shane Bettenhausen was fortunate enough to visit Guerrilla where Killzone 2 is in development. In addition to getting the tour treatment, he got to speaking with several of the developers and nabbed some exclusive, never-before-seen gameplay that you can see on the show.

If you’re more of a PC gamer, perhaps the prequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is of some interest to you? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky was on display for several of the guys from 1UP and it’s definitely looking pretty hot.

All of that is on this week’s 1UP Show, which you can stream on GameVideos right here, or download from any of the links below. Oh, and just a heads-up — next week, there will be three installments of the 1UP Show on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You can count on there being some cool stuff on there, directly from E3, so stay tuned.

PlayStation Store 7/3: Qore Episode 2, Including an Exclusive Naruto Demo

By Chris on Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 at 8:05 PM
In 2K Games, Activision, Battlefield, Electronic Arts, Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Games, Sony, Sony

It was only a matter of time before Qore got an exclusive demo, and it didn’t take long. Qore Episode 2 was released today and includes the exclusive Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm demo. (I wonder how many diehard Naruto fans fork over the $3 entry fee to play the demo.) It’s also got part one of a three part series on the development of Resistance 2. In other words, I continue to regret having purchased a subscription when Qore was first released.

Qore is pretty much the main attraction this week. You can find the week’s new Rock Band tracks (including one free track) and the free Guitar Hero III Top Gun track that Stephany posted about on Tuesday. Although I wouldn’t recommend grabbing the latter, not unless you want to torture yourself with garbage.

Sony Confirms Game List for E3 Extravaganza

sonye3 Sony Confirms Game List for E3 Extravaganza

SCEA has posted a list of games that will be featured during E3 this year, and the majority of the titles either come as no surprise or could be included in the WTF category if there happens to be one. The WTF titles happen to be have the word Buzz! proceeding “Master Quiz” and “Quiz TV”.

Come on Sony. You can do better than this:

  • Killzone 2 (PS3)
  • LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
  • MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)
  • PixelJunk Eden (PS3)
  • Resistance 2 (PS3)
  • SIREN: Blood Curse Episode #1 [PSN] (PS3)
  • SOCOM: Confrontation (PS3)
  • Buzz! Master Quiz
  • Buzz! Quiz TV

Are these two additional titles really all that “buzz” worthy to be shown off at E3?

Thanks: VG247
